Can I Bring Spray On A Plane?

Aerosol Can Carry-On

The short answer is yes but not all sprays are allowed.

Common personal care sprays like facial mists, toner sprays, makeup setting sprays, and similar everyday products are usually allowed on flights, provided they meet airport security requirements.

If you’re carrying them in your hand luggage, these sprays are treated as liquids, so you’ll need to follow standard cabin baggage rules:

  • Each container must be 100ml or less
  • All liquids, aerosols, and gels must fit inside one clear resealable plastic bag
  • The bag should typically not exceed 1 litre in total capacity
  • Each traveller is allowed one plastic bag

This applies when departing from airports like Singapore Changi Airport as well as most international airports.

📌 Just a heads-up: Airline and security screening regulations may change. The information above is for reference only—please refer to the announcements on each airline’s official website for the most up-to-date details.

Be Careful with Aerosol Sprays

Some spray products are considered more restricted, especially aerosols labelled with a flammable symbol (🔥).

Examples include:

  • Aerosol hairspray
  • Certain body sprays
  • Hair styling sprays
  • Some deodorant sprays

If your spray bottle has a flammable warning label, it may be allowed in carry-on luggage, even if it’s under 100ml as long as they are for personal use (e.g. hairspray, deodorant).

Can You Bring Sunscreen Spray on a Plane?

Sunscreen Spray 100ml

Yes, but there are restrictions.

If you want to bring sunscreen spray in your carry-on bag:

  • The container must be 100ml or less
  • It must fit in your clear resealable liquids bag
  • The product should not contain prohibited hazardous ingredients

What about aerosol sunscreen?

If the sunscreen spray has a flammable aerosol warning symbol (🔥), it may be allowed in cabin baggage.

Make sure it is under 100ml if it is in carry-on.

When in doubt, pack it in your checked luggage instead.

⚠️ Just to reiterate: If it’s an aerosol sunscreen with the flame symbol 🔥, 👉 you can’t bring it on the plane in your carry-on—no matter the size!

Can You Pack Sunscreen Spray in Checked Luggage?

Sunscreen in luggage

Yes, but checked baggage usually allows more flexibility👇

As long as your sunscreen spray contains safe, non-hazardous ingredients and is in compliant packaging, you can pack it in your checked bag.

Even aerosols labeled as flammable can usually go in your checked baggage, as long as they meet the "personal-use aerosol" rules set by civil aviation authorities and your airline:

✔ For personal care, grooming, or hygiene use only (e.g., sunscreen, antiperspirant, hairspray)

Each container must not exceed 500ml or 0.5kg

Total aerosol products must not exceed 2L or 2kg per passenger

✔ The bottle must have a safety feature to prevent accidental activation (such as a nozzle cap).

❌ Not permitted for industrial or cleaning purposes (such as insecticides or spray paint)

Can You Bring Hairspray on a Plane?

Aerosol in cabin.

If it’s made with non-hazardous ingredients and the container is under 100 mL, you might be able to bring it on board for checked baggage, it depends on the regulations.

Baggage Type

Allowed?

Requirements

Carry-on luggage

✅ Yes (in some cases)

- Must be non-flammable

- Bottle must be 100ml or less

- Must fit in your clear resealable liquids bag

Carry-on luggage (flammable aerosol hairspray)

❌ No

If your hairspray has a flammable warning symbol (🔥), it may be rejected during airport security screening

Checked baggage

✅ Yes

- Each bottle must be 500ml or less

- Total aerosol volume must not exceed 2L per passenger

- Must be for personal grooming use only

⚠️ Most important:

  • It’s not just the airlines—some countries have even stricter customs rules!
  • In some regions, aerosol sprays are off-limits—even in checked bags.
  • Before you take off, check the destination country’s customs official website for "prohibited items" so your belongings don’t get confiscated as soon as you arrive at the airport.
👉So our recommendation is that, unless it’s absolutely necessary, we really don’t suggest bringing this type of item abroad.

Can You Bring Dry Shampoo on a Plane?

Dry Shampoo Carry-On

Sure, but please confirm the "type" and "capacity" first.

  • Non-flammable, non-toxic aerosol dry shampoo → You can bring it.
  • Carry-on luggage: Make sure liquids are in containers of 100 ml (3.4 oz) or less.
  • Anything over 100 ml → pack it in checked baggage

When checking your bags, please keep the following restrictions in mind:

  • Each bottle must not exceed 500 ml.
  • The total amount of all aerosols, liquids, and gels must not exceed 2,000 ml.

Can I Bring Pepper Spray on a Plane?

pepper spray i prohibited

The answer is no.

Pepper spray is generally not prohibited in both:

  • Carry-on luggage
  • Checked baggage

Many airports and countries classify pepper spray as a controlled weapon.

This includes destinations such as Hong Kong and Macau, where strict penalties may apply if prohibited items are discovered. To avoid delays, fines, or confiscation, leave pepper spray at home.

What About Duty-Free Spray Purchases?

Duty-free sprays purchase.

Buying spray products at duty-free shops? Keep these tips in mind:

If you’re transiting through airports especially in Europe duty-free liquids and aerosols often need to remain sealed in the official tamper-proof bag.

If you open the bag during transit, airport security may confiscate the item during your next screening.

The safest option? Buy duty-free sprays after clearing your final security checkpoint.

Final Tip for Singapore Travellers

Departing from Changi.

If you’re flying from Singapore Changi Airport, always double-check both airline baggage policies and destination customs rules before packing spray products.

When unsure, pack non-essential aerosols in checked luggage or skip them entirely for a smoother airport experience.
