Skip single-journey tickets. Mobile payment is the way to go for Singaporeans:
Option 1: Alipay (Most Recommended)

Source: viajeroslowcosteros
- Open Alipay (link your Singaporean Visa/Mastercard beforehand).
- Search for “Shenzhen Metro” or tap “Travel” → Select “Shenzhen” → Activate the metro QR code.
- Scan the code at turnstiles to enter and exit—fares are deducted automatically from your linked card.
Pro Tip: Ensure your Alipay name matches your passport (SURNAME FIRST NAME in caps) to avoid verification issues.
Option 2: UnionPay Quick Pay
If you have a UnionPay card (common among Singaporean banks), tap it directly on the card reader at turnstiles. No app needed. This works with Apple Pay or other contactless wallets too.
Option 3: Shenzhen Tong Card (For Longer Stays)

If you’re staying over a week, pick up a Shenzhen Tong Card at station service counters:
- Requires a ¥20 deposit + minimum ¥80 top-up.
- Works on buses and taxis too, with small fare discounts.
- Refundable deposit (return the card at service counters before departure).
Option 4: Single Tickets
You can buy single tickets from ticket machines at every metro station. Machines have English, Chinese, and sometimes other languages. Pay with cash (RMB notes and coins) or a card. The stations have a service counter if you need help.
After buying your ticket, you will get a small plastic card. Tap this card on the sensor at the gate to enter the station. Keep the card in your pocket during your ride. When you exit, insert the card into the slot on the gate to leave the station.

How to Take the Metro in Shenzhen?

1. Plan Your Route
Apps: Use Amap (Gaode Maps) for real-time schedules, transfer alerts, and English navigation. Apple Maps also works well for iOS users, as it integrates Gaode’s data in English.
Offline Prep: Download offline maps before your trip - critical if you’re relying on a China eSIM.
2. Go Through Security
All bags must go through X-ray scanners. Keep your belongings accessible to avoid delays.
3. Buy a Ticket
At the station, buy a single ticket from the machine or use your Shenzhen Tong Public Transportation Card or Alipay Metro Card to tap in or scan the QR code.
4. Find Your Platform
Look for signs in English and Chinese. They’ll tell you which direction to take based on the line colour and end station.
5. Board the Train
Wait behind the yellow line on the platform. Let passengers off first before you get on.
6. Exit at Your Station
Check your app for the best exit (numbered and labeled) to reach your destination. Stations are large, and the wrong exit can add 10+ minutes to your journey.

- Avoid Line 4 During Rush Hour: Operated by MTR (Hong Kong), Line 4 (Longhua Line) gets extremely crowded between 8–9 AM and 6–7 PM.
- Stay Connected: Purchase a China eSIM before departure to access navigation apps and mobile payments.
- Buffer Time for Last Trains: Most lines end around 11:30 PM, but stations are large. Allow 15–20 minutes to reach the platform to avoid missing the last train.
