Travelling around China by high-speed train is super easy and smooth. It is more comfortable than other local transport options. In this guide we will tell you all about the rules for luggage on China high-speed trains.
China Railway has rules about the luggage you can take on the train. These rules are the same for all people who travel with China railway. While there are some differences between the fast trains, like the high-speed bullet trains and the regular trains.

Unlike flights, China train luggage checks are not too strict for mistakes.
You can bring a suitcase on the China bullet train, but there are some rules about the size. A regular 20-inch or 24-inch suitcase will be just fine. Even a 26-inch suitcase is usually okay, but it is a little close to the size limit. If you have a really big suitcase like a 28-inch or 30-inch one, it is probably too big for the China bullet train. The China bullet train has a size limit of 130cm for suitcases and big suitcases like these are usually too big. Sometimes the staff might let you bring a big suitcase if it is not busy, but if it is a busy time of year, they will probably say no.

The answer is no. When you take the high-speed rail, you have to carry all your bags with you onto the train. The high-speed rail has a rule that you must keep your luggage with you on the train. There is no place to check in your bags or store them somewhere else on the train for regular passengers. You have to keep all your bags with you all the time when you are on the high-speed rail.
Officially if you have luggage that is too big or too heavy, you have to pay fees or send it as a separate shipment. In reality a little extra weight usually doesn't get charged. If your luggage is really huge or really heavy, they won't let you bring it on board. That means you have to either leave some things behind or send them by courier.

Overnight sleeper trains are popular for cross-country travel in China, and they require unique packing and storage strategies.

Major Chinese train stations are extremely large with long security queues. Arrive at least 45–60 minutes before departure, especially with large luggage, to navigate checkpoints and walking distances comfortably.
Weekends and national holidays cause severe station and carriage congestion. Luggage storage spaces fill up quickly during these periods, making travel far more stressful. Opt for weekday off-peak services whenever possible.
Aisle seats offer easier access to luggage storage zones, while window seats are more comfortable for resting. End-carriage seats are ideal for travellers with large bags, as they sit closest to dedicated oversized luggage storage areas.
For group travel, coordinate boarding to secure adjacent storage spaces. Separate essentials into individual small bags to avoid unpacking large suitcases repeatedly during travel.
