Travel to Hangzhou

Hangzhou feels like a city that’s always in two places at once. On one side, there’s the calm of West Lake, with old temples and quiet tea fields. On the other, the city hums with busy streets, shiny malls, and cool cafes. You can drink Longjing tea in a 100-year-old teahouse, then step out into a world of lights. It’s a mix of old charm and fresh energy.

So I went to Qingshanhu, just outside Hangzhou, in March—and omg, the iconic green Matcha Lake wasn’t really showing up yet 😢. Turns out, it’s still a bit chilly and the vibrant lake only comes alive when it’s warm. The staff spilled the tea: the legit best time to visit is between May and October, when you can soak in those matcha green vibes and all the Insta-worthy scenery!

So, if you want that Matcha Lake glow for your feed, plan your trip right!

How to get there? It’s super easy. Hop on a Didi (basically like China’s Uber) or take the metro—Qingshanhu is pretty accessible from Hangzhou city center. The lake is located at Qingshanhu Sci-Tech City (青山湖科技城), Lin’an District, Hangzhou, Zhejiang. Opening hours are usually 8:30am–5:00pm, but double-check with trip.com for the latest info.

Timing is everything! Visit during those warmer months for the full Matcha Lake experience. If you do go out of season, you might miss those jaw-dropping views, but there’s always next time!

🗺🧭 "Survive or not survive?" Plan ahead! My 4th trip to Shanghai includes a visit to Hangzhou at least once. 🚆

Here's my Hangzhou One Day Trip plan from Shanghai:

🚄 Hangzhou One Day Trip

5:00 AM: Call a Didi taxi from your accommodation in Shanghai and head to Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station (no need to wait for the subway to open).

5. 52 AM: Depart by high-speed train.
6. 51 AM: Arrive at Hangzhou East Station. Grab a quick breakfast/coffee at the train station.

7. 30 AM: Take a Didi taxi from Hangzhou East Station directly to Leifeng Pagoda, located south of West Lake. (Takes approximately 30-40 minutes)
08. 15 - 09:45: Leifeng Pagoda 🏯
Take the escalator up to enjoy a 360-degree panoramic view of West Lake early in the morning.
**The advantage is that the sun isn't too hot, the tour groups haven't arrived yet, making for very clean street and lake view photos.**
10. 00 - 11:30: Painted Boat Cruise 🚣♀️
Walk to the pier near the pagoda, buy a ticket for a boat trip on West Lake, and stop at Three Pools Mirroring the Moon (the spot where you can take photos of the 1 Yuan banknote). Enjoy the relaxing boat ride and the cool breeze.

11. 45 - 13:15: Lunch at Grandma's Home (Yongjin Branch) 🍽️
The boat will drop you off on the Hangzhou side, moving towards the east/north. Stop for lunch at this famous local restaurant. Order the Donpo pork and Longjing tea-fried shrimp to recharge. Delicious Food Review (13:30 - 15:15): Quyuan Fenghe Park + Lotus Garden Cafe 🌸🐠
Take the Didi bus to the northwest of the lake. Stroll through Quyuan Fenghe Park, enjoy the birds and plants, then head to Lotus Garden Cafe (莲遇花园餐厅) to check in and take photos of the famous upside-down glass aquarium. Order a refreshing drink, rest your legs, and create content for social media.

15:30 - 17:15: Hangzhou Tower (杭州大厦) 🛍️📸
Take the Didi bus from the lake area and head north to the central business district at Hangzhou Tower. Stop to take photos and check in at... Stunning flower-decorated staircase and air-conditioned shopping for the latest fashion trends.
17:30 - 19:15: Jiangnan Fusion Dinner at Xixiang (溪香) Restaurant 🥢
Enjoy dinner at Xixiang, a modern Jiangnan-style restaurant with minimalist decor blended with an ancient Chinese rock garden.
19:15: Take a Didi taxi from the restaurant/Hangzhou Tower directly to Hangzhou Dong Station. Allow 30-40 minutes for travel time and evening traffic.

7. 55 PM: Arrive at Hangzhou East Station. Enter the station, scan your passport, and prepare to board the platform.
8. 35 PM: Depart for Shanghai.
9. 30 PM: Arrive safely at Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station. Take a Didi taxi back to your accommodation.
Alternatively, take Metro Line 10 (purple line) directly without changing lines (highly recommended 👍).
Your hotel is located near Tiantong Road Metro Station, which is on Line 10, making it the easiest to get around.
From Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station: Follow the signs in the high-speed train station to the Metro Line 10 (purple line) platform.
Direct ride: Take Metro Line 10 and get off at Tiantong Road Station (天潼路). The journey takes approximately 36-40 minutes (16 stations total). The fare is 5 yuan.
Walk to the hotel: Upon arriving at Tiantong Road Station, use the nearest exit. Then walk a little further and you'll reach the Golden Tulip Bund New Asia Hotel.

🌸 1. Quyuan Fenghe Park
Flower Highlight: Although this place is famous for its lotus ponds in the summer, in early April, this area and the area around West Lake become a very beautiful spot to see cherry blossoms and peach blossoms. You will see pink and white petals reflected on the lake's surface. Every photo angle looks lovely in the Jiangnan style.
🌷 2. Flower Staircase at Hangzhou Tower
Flower Highlight: Leading department stores in China often have grand decorations to welcome spring. In early April, the landmark staircase of Hangzhou Tower is often transformed into... 1. Staircase adorned with large, fresh or decorative flowers (such as tulips or brightly colored blooming flowers), a popular street fashion photo spot favored by Chinese influencers for check-ins.
🚣♀️ 3. West Lake Boat Cruise & Three Lakes Reflecting the Moon
Scenic View: The scenery along the shores of West Lake in early April is filled with lush green willow trees, contrasting with the pink of peach blossoms planted along the shoreline (a unique "green willow, red peach" atmosphere). Viewing this from a cruise boat offers a beautiful and romantic perspective.
🏯 4. Leifeng Pagoda
Scenic View: When you climb to the top of Leifeng Pagoda and look down, you'll see a panoramic view of West Lake surrounded by forests and parks changing color to green interspersed with pink from blooming flowers. It's a beautiful bird's-eye view that's definitely worth snapping photos of.
🐠 5. Lotus Garden Cafe (Hanging Upside Down Aquarium Cafe)
Atmosphere: The cafe is located in a shady garden area. In early April, the trees and grass are at their most lush green, and the natural flowering shrubs surrounding the shop are in bloom. Combined with the stylish glass aquarium, this creates a refreshing and vibrant mood for photos.

**Note:** Booking high-speed train tickets through the Trip.com app allows you to choose your seats – very convenient! 🚆

It was one of the most atmospheric yet confusing routes of my life.

🐉 Why "Golden Dragon" and where is it?

Don't confuse it with other caves! The correct name is Huanglongdong (sometimes translated as Yellow Dragon Cave). It got its name for a reason: according to legend, a massive yellow dragon hid here during a drought, helping local farmers with water . Skeptics, of course, say it's because of the limestone's color, but the atmosphere inside is truly "dragon-like."

It is located in the Wulingyuan district, right at the foot of the very mountains that inspired the creators of "Avatar" .

⏱ How much time should you plan for?

This isn't a five-minute walk. The official route takes about 2 hours . But, as you'll see below, we spent a bit more time due to our own carelessness.

Important: You can easily "drop by for half a day," but it's better to set aside 3-3.5 hours to walk through everything at a relaxed pace, take a boat ride, and not rush around like crazy.

🗺 The route and my mistake (learn from it!)

"It's so simple, there's a map," we thought after buying our tickets. There really is a map hanging at the entrance, and it seems straightforward. But! Huanglong Cave isn't just a room; it's a four-level maze with chasms and underground rivers .

How to do it right: There are two types of routes inside — a water route and a dry one. Most tourists first head to the pier, get on a boat, and sail for 10–15 minutes along the underground Xiangshui (Echoing Water) River . It's absolutely breathtaking: the silence, the dripping water, and the illuminated stalactites.

What we did: We looked at the map... and walked up the stairs. And the most frustrating part is that we missed that very boat!

The result: We had to turn around and trudge all the way back to the start to find the way down to the river. The moral of the story: look closely at the map and follow the crowd if you don't want to rack up extra miles.

🤩 What's inside?

Even despite my mistake, the cave is incredible. It's about 380 million years old , and a whole skyscraper could fit inside: in some places, the vaults rise up to 140 meters .

🗓 Combining it with the Avatar Mountains (East Gate)

This is important. You don't have to travel from afar just for a trip to the cave.

Huanglong Cave is literally a 15-minute drive from the East Gate of Zhangjiajie National Forest Park (the one that's a great starting point for exploring the Yangjiajie and Yuanjiajie mountains) .

💡 Lifehacks (so you don't repeat my mistakes)

1. The map is your best friend! Check it out at the entrance. Find the "Underground River" and don't repeat my mistakes. Boat first, then walk — that's the optimal way.
2. Clothing: The temperature inside is consistently around 16–20°C (60–68°F), even in summer . It's humid, and the floors are wet. Sneakers with non-slip soles are an absolute must. And don't forget a long-sleeved shirt or light jacket.
3. Entrance near the park: Bus No. 1 runs from Wulingyuan village right to the cave entrance (or you can grab a taxi for 25-30 RMB) .
4. Guided tour or going solo: Inside, they might group you with guides (often only speaking Chinese). If you don't know the language, just enjoy the natural architecture. Audio guides are sometimes available, but you need to ask about them at the ticket office.

Summary: Huanglong Cave is a must-visit if you're in Wulingyuan. It's beautiful, mysterious, and serves as a perfect "dessert" after an exhausting hike in the mountains. Just watch your step and read the signs carefully.

🔦 Secret level: the dark loop worth exploring

The average tourist takes the boat, looks at the stalagmites, and steps out into the fresh air, thinking the tour is over. And they'd be wrong.

Toward the end of the main section of the cave, you'll spot an inconspicuous side passage. At first glance, it seems like: "I shouldn't go there, it's dark and there's nothing." Right in front of the entrance, staff members are sitting, taking payments, and handing out helmets with headlamps. These aren't just souvenirs — you really shouldn't venture into the dark loop without them.

This is your ticket to a completely different adventure.

From there, a circular route through the far end of the cave begins. It's not lit by spotlights, there's no music, and there are no guides waving flags. It's just you, the stone vaults, and the beam of your flashlight catching stalactites half a meter from your face in the darkness.

It's genuinely dark in there. The only light comes from your headlamp. In some places, the passage narrows, the walls close in, and you walk feeling the cool limestone against your back. Somewhere you have to duck, somewhere else you have to maneuver around an obstacle.

Who shouldn't try it:

· Claustrophobics — the ceiling sometimes presses down on you here, and the feeling of being in a confined space can be overwhelming.
· Those who panic in pitch darkness — turn off your headlamp for a second, and you'll understand what absolute zero light really is.

But if you dare — it's totally worth it. This isn't just a walk to tick off a box. It's that very moment when you feel like an explorer, not a tourist. A real cave — unembellished, without pink lighting for Instagram, and without lines for selfies. Deep, silent, and a little bit eerie.

Tip: don't skip this passage. At first, you might think you shouldn't go in. But in reality, it's the best thing the cave has to offer.

Ahhh! This hidden gem in Tonglu is truly stunning. The Tianzidi Mountain Wilderness Park tucked deep in the mountains has so many fun activities! 🎢🏰

First must-visit is the glass plank road! The entire walkway is transparent, walking on it is really thrilling, but the view overlooking the whole canyon is absolutely breathtaking! 🌄

Next is the glass rafting, a 1200-meter ride downstream that’s super exciting! Just be sure to wear a raincoat~ 🎢

May Day Travel Essentials

1. Lingyin Temple and Xixi Wetland are busy during May Day. Be sure to book tickets 3-7 days in advance on Trip.com to avoid being sold out.

2. Hangzhou’s spring mornings and evenings have a large temperature difference (15-25°C), with frequent rain and humidity. Prepare a light jacket, portable rain gear, and non-slip sports shoes.

3. The West Lake West Line and Jiuxi Smoke Trees hiking routes have many steps and slippery surfaces. Plan your energy wisely and wear comfortable sports shoes.

4. Facilities in lesser-known ancient streets and old town guesthouses are basic. Bring a power bank, sunscreen, mosquito repellent, and common medicines to enhance your travel experience.

5. Respect Hangzhou’s history and culture. Behave civilly, avoid loud noises and graffiti in temples and ruins, and protect tea garden vegetation.

For those feeling low on energy, Hangzhou suggests this route. Hangzhou in late spring and early summer is truly a massive energy field. With hydrangeas, climbing roses, azaleas, and water lilies, stepping into the depths of West Lake is like entering a real-life Monet garden. Sharing a beloved free West Lake city walk route. Along the way, it's lush green, bright and beautiful, with few people and very tranquil. It's perfect for a leisurely stroll, immersing yourself in the beauty of West Lake, and especially suitable for a nature trip with children.
🗺️Specific Route:
Botanical Garden North Gate - Landscape Garden - Jade Spring Fish Leaping - Hundred Herbs Garden - Han Meilin Art Museum - Bonsai Garden - Botanical Garden Southeast Gate - Yunsong Shushe - Curved Yard and Lotus Pool in Summer - Maojiabu
🚶🏻After walking the entire route, here are a few beloved secret spots of West Lake:
➊Maojiabu: After the cherry blossoms and Orychophragmus violaceus have bloomed, a large expanse of water lilies has quietly opened up, right at the intersection of Santai Mountain Road and Longjing Road.
➋Hundred Herbs Garden: A Monet-like sea of flowers that 99% of people overlook, now full of azaleas. The flower clusters cascade like waterfalls, making up for the regret of not seeing bougainvillea waterfalls in Hangzhou.
➌Landscape Garden: Azalea seas by the lake with different sceneries, the lake's reflection creates a garden straight out of a painting.
➍Han Meilin Art Museum: The popular Buddha head is right at the entrance of the museum, and the floor-to-ceiling window view on the second floor of the museum is also incredibly beautiful, filled with greenery.
➎Jade Spring Fish Leaping: The path leading to this green secret realm is incredibly photogenic.
➏Bonsai Garden: Walk in and turn left, it's full of hydrangeas and climbing roses. Although the hydrangeas won't last much longer, the small yellow flowers from Jay Chou's story are still in full bloom.
➐Yunsong Shushe: Just outside the Botanical Garden Southeast Gate is Yunsong Study, left to Hangzhou by Mr. Louis Cha.
➑Curved Yard and Lotus Pool in Summer: A dreamcore fish tank check-in spot, but I prefer the uncrowded West Lake secret spot next door, where you can immerse yourself in the greenery and leisurely watch boats on West Lake.
This route is truly healing. Along the way, there are few people and beautiful scenery. Children can learn about various plants and experience the beauty of nature.

Hidden treasure mountain and water secret spot in Lin'an! 🌿🦢🌳
Qingshan Lake, a low-key treasure hidden on the edge of Hangzhou!
📍Location: About 200 meters south of Hangzhou Yuyuan Homestay (Qinshan Street Branch) on Shengyuan Road, Lin'an District, Hangzhou (You can search "Qingshan Lake" on major navigation apps for direct and convenient directions)
🚗Transportation: Drive directly to Qingshan Lake. It takes about 1 hour from downtown Hangzhou by car, and the road conditions are very good.
🎫Tickets: Adult ticket 100 RMB, Senior (60-70 years old) 45 RMB, Student (full-time) 35 RMB, Child (1.2-1.5 meters) 45 RMB.
⏰Opening Hours: Open every year from January 1 to December 31, 08:00-17:30 (last entry at 17:00).
✨Experience: Qingshan Lake is really a place suitable for slow exploration. Since the scenic area is quite large, it is recommended to prepare enough time for visiting. You can walk or ride a bike inside the park. We rented a 4-person bike for 70 RMB/hour, which is affordable and offers a good experience. It is recommended to take the boat from the entrance directly to the opposite shore to start your visit.
✨Highlights:
1. There is an ecological corridor in the park where you can observe squirrels and white geese up close, which kids especially love!
2. Many pigeons and ducks in the park are not afraid of people, allowing close observation!
3. The lake surface is very wide, and you can experience bamboo raft drifting.
4. The forest trails have a great atmosphere, perfect for taking stunning photos!
5. The water is crystal clear, with some green algae on the lake surface, but it does not affect the experience much.
✨Tips: It is recommended to visit on weekdays when there are fewer people and it feels more relaxed. The rental prices for bikes and bamboo rafts in the park are quite reasonable.
