Hangzhou has a subtropical climate, which means mild, humid summers and cool, damp winters. Temperature in Hangzhou is moderate year-round. Here’s a breakdown of what to expect in Hangzhou each season:

Spring (March - May): Fresh air & blooming flowers

Spring in Hangzhou is absolutely delightful. Temperatures range from 10°C (50°F) to 20°C (68°F), and the humidity starts to rise slightly. While it's generally mild, there can be a few rainy days.

🌿 What to wear: Layered clothing is your best friend—think light sweaters and jackets for the cooler mornings, and comfortable shoes for walking around West Lake and exploring tea fields.

• Take a peaceful walk along the West Lake, where the cherry blossoms and lotuses are in full bloom.
• Visit Lingyin Temple and enjoy the fresh spring air while soaking in the calm ambiance.
• Rent a bike and explore the tea plantations around Longjing—this is a great time to see the fields in full bloom!

Summer (June - August): Hot & humid

Summer in Hangzhou can be a little intense, and I’ve found it to be quite hot and humid, with temperatures soaring above 30°C (86°F) and often reaching 35°C (95°F) on some days. 

It can feel even warmer due to the humidity, so if you're visiting Hangzhou in summer, be ready for a hot, sticky experience. The occasional thunderstorm provides some relief, but it can get quite steamy.

👕 What to wear: Light, breathable fabrics like cotton or linen are a must. I always carry an umbrella to protect myself from both the sun and sudden rain showers.

• Take refuge indoors by visiting the China National Silk Museum or the Hangzhou Museum—both are air-conditioned and full of cultural history!
• For some outdoor fun, rent a paddleboat on West Lake at sunset. The evening breeze feels refreshing after a hot day.

💡 Tip: Beat the afternoon heat and explore Hangzhou in the early morning or evening. If you can, head to Xixi Wetlands during the evening for a cooler experience.

Autumn (September - November): The best time to visit Hangzhou

Autumn is, without a doubt, my favorite time to visit Hangzhou. The weather is cool and crisp, with temperatures ranging from 15°C to 25°C (59°F to 77°F). The humidity drops, making outdoor activities much more comfortable. 

I’ve visited during this season multiple times, and it’s perfect for hiking, sightseeing, and photography, especially with the autumn foliage.

🧥 What to wear: A light jacket or sweater works perfectly during the day, and I always carry a warmer layer for cooler evenings.

• Hike Lingyin Temple and the Fragrant Hills for breathtaking views of autumn leaves and the surrounding mountains.
• Stroll around West Lake to see the beautiful fall colours—this is the time to snap those iconic photos!

💡 Tip: Avoid visiting during Golden Week (October 1-7) if you can—this is one of the busiest travel periods in China, and the popular sites can get crowded.

Winter (December - February): Cold but peaceful

Winter in Hangzhou can be chilly, but it’s not as extreme as in northern China. Temperatures range from 3°C to 10°C (37°F to 50°F), and while snow is rare, the occasional frost adds a serene atmosphere to the city. Winter is a quieter season for tourism, which makes it an excellent time to enjoy the peace and beauty of Hangzhou without the crowds.

🧣 What to wear: A heavy coat, scarf, gloves, and layers are essential. The dry air can make it feel colder than it is, so I always dress warmly.

• Pros: Comfortable weather, fewer tourists than in the peak season, and great for exploring. You’ll find better deals on hotels and flights.

• Pros: If you’re okay with cooler weather and don’t mind the occasional drizzle, off-peak travel offers budget-friendly options and a quieter experience. 
• Cons: Some attractions may have shorter hours or be closed during this time, and it’s not ideal if you’re after the vibrant outdoor scenes of spring and summer.
