Top China Metro Apps Guide 2026: How to Use & Tips for Singaporean Travellers

If you’re planning a trip to China, let me save you a ton of stress! The secret to smooth travel around China’s cities is using the right China Metro app. 

Not all China Metro apps are created equal. Some are only in Chinese, others don’t support international payments, and a few are total duds. Here are the ones tested on my recent trip to China:

1. MetroMan China – Best for English-Speaking Travellers

If you want an app that’s 100% in English and works offline, MetroMan China is your new best friend. This app is designed specifically for international travellers, with fully updated metro maps for 53 Chinese cities and supports 11 languages.

It can work offline, perfect for when you don’t have data or struggle with VPN issues in China. You can download detailed metro maps for your destination city before you travel, plan routes (including transfer times and fares), and even check which exit to take for nearby landmarks.

2. Alipay – All-in-One for Metro, Payments & More

You’ve probably heard of Alipay, but did you know it’s also one of the best China Metro apps? Alipay’s transport feature lets you generate a QR code for metros in almost every major Chinese city, so you can scan and go, no need for tickets or physical cards.

The best part for foreign travellers: You can link your international Visa or Mastercard to Alipay, so you don’t need a Chinese bank account. 

Here’s how to set it up:

1. Download Alipay from the App Store or Google Play (it has an English version!)
2. Sign up with your email or phone number (no Chinese ID required)
3. Go to the “Transport” section on the homepage
4. Select your city
5. Link your card (Visa/Mastercard) and verify your identity
6. Generate your metro QR code. Scan it at the turnstile to enter and exit, and fares will be deducted automatically

3. Explore Metro – Simple Metro Navigation

It shows real-time train arrivals, clearly marks transfer stations, and highlights which exits lead to popular tourist spots. It also supports English search, so you can type in station names or landmarks.

4. Baidu Maps – Local-Grade Metro Navigation

Baidu Maps is one of China’s most popular navigation apps, and while it doesn’t have a full English version, it’s surprisingly easy for foreigners to use for metro navigation, with a few simple tricks. It’s ideal if you want an all-in-one app that handles metro, walking, and driving directions, plus local recommendations.

Here’s how to use Baidu Maps for metro travel: 

• First, download the app (no VPN needed) and skip the login if you don’t have a Chinese phone number—you can use it as a guest. 
• While the interface is mostly in Chinese, you can use Google Translate’s camera mode to instantly translate buttons and menus, or learn a few key terms.

Metro-specific features: Baidu Maps offers hyper-accurate metro routes, real-time delays, and detailed station layouts. It also integrates with local metro QR code systems in most cities.

5. Amap (Gaode Maps) – The Local’s Go-To for Metro

Amap (also known as Gaode Maps) is another top-tier Chinese navigation app, and it’s often preferred by locals for its accuracy and comprehensive features. Like Baidu Maps, it has limited English support, but it’s worth learning to use for its reliability, especially in smaller Chinese cities where other apps might lack data.

Amap’s metro features stand out for their detail: It shows real-time train arrivals (down to the minute), calculates the fastest transfer routes, and even displays how crowded each train car is. 

6. City-Specific Apps

If you’re spending most of your trip in one city, consider downloading the official metro app for that city.

Tips for Using China Metro Apps

I learned these tips the hard way, so I’m sharing them to save you time and frustration. Follow these, and you’ll navigate China’s metros like a local:

• Link Your International Card Correctly: When linking your Visa/Mastercard to Alipay or city-specific apps, make sure your name matches your passport (surname first, in caps). 
• Download Offline Maps: Even if you have data, China’s internet can be spotty in some metro stations. Download the offline map for your city using MetroMan China or Apple Maps to avoid getting lost.
• Check Exit Numbers: China’s metro stations are huge, and some have 10+ exits. Use your app to check which exit is closest to your destination (e.g., “Exit D for Chunxi Road” in Chengdu)—this will save you from walking around aimlessly.
• Avoid Rush Hour: If possible, avoid traveling between 7:30–9:00 AM and 5:30–7:30 PM. Trains get extremely crowded during these times, and you’ll struggle to navigate with luggage.
• Troubleshoot Login Issues: If you’re having trouble logging into your China Metro app, check your VPN (some apps work better without it) or clear your app cache.
