🎒 Carry-On Baggage Allowance: What You Can Bring Onboard

Singapore Airlines passengers receive different cabin baggage allowances by travel class:

  • Economy/Premium Economy: 1 cabin bag + 1 personal item
  • Suites/First/Business Class: 2 cabin bags + 1 personal item

Cabin Bag Size & Weight Limits

Standard cabin bag limits:

  • Maximum dimensions: 115cm total (length + width + height)
  • Maximum weight: 7kg
  • Includes handles and wheels
  • Must fit in overhead bin or under seat

Bags exceeding these limits will be checked into cargo hold and may incur additional charges if you exceed your free checked baggage allowance.

What Counts as a Personal Item?

Personal item allowance:

  • Maximum size: 40cm x 30cm x 10cm
  • Items exceeding 80cm total dimensions count as your main cabin bag

Acceptable personal items include:

  • Handbag or briefcase
  • Laptop or tablet bag
  • Camera bag
  • Small backpack
  • Umbrella or overcoat

Bonus: Passengers with infants can bring up to 6kg of baby food and amenities.

Item Restriction in Cabin/Checked Baggage

Completely banned in cabin or checked baggage:

  • Explosives, 
  • Lighters and strike-anywhere matches
  • Compressed gases
  • Flammable liquids and solids, etc.

Not allowed in cabin baggage (advised to put in checked baggage):

  • Knives and sharp objects (scissors, nail clippers, etc.)

Lithium batteries & power banks:

  • Only allowed in cabin baggage (not checked luggage)
  • Maximum 100Wh (~27,000mAh) without approval
  • 100-160Wh requires airline approval (max 2 pieces)
  • Cannot be used or charged during flight

Liquids, aerosols, gels (LAGs):

  • LAGs in cabin baggage: Maximum 100ml per container. Must fit in 1 clear, resealable 1-litre bag per passenger.
  • LAGs in checked baggage: No restriction

Singapore Airlines provides free checked baggage allowance based on your travel class and destination, with allowances calculated using either the weight or piece concept.

Allowance by Travel Class

Weight Concept (all destinations except Canada/USA):

  • Economy Lite / Value: 25kg
  • Economy Standard / Flexi: 30kg
  • Premium Economy Class: 35kg
  • Business Class: 40kg
  • First Class / Suites: 50kg

Piece Concept (Canada/USA):

💰 Singapore Airlines Excess & Overweight Baggage Fees

Weight Concept routes (excluding USA/Canada):

Additional baggage rates are calculated per kilogram based, and range from USD6–42/kg, depending on 

  • Route band (based on distance of travel), and 
  • Time before departure (>48h before departure / 48-6h before departure / within 6h to departure)

Route bands:

  • Band 1: Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, etc.
  • Band 2: China, Japan, Korea, etc.
  • Band 3: Australia, New Zealand, etc.
  • Band 4: Europe, Africa, etc.

eg. Singapore to Hong Kong (Band 2 destination) costs 

  • USD12/kg if you book more than 48 hours before departure, or 
  • USD14/kg if you book between 48 hours and 6 hours before departure, or
  • USD15/kg if you book within 6 hours to departure

Note: each piece of baggage can weigh up to a maximum of 32kg due to safety regulations.

Piece Concept routes (SIN-US/Canada):

For SIN-USA/Canada routes, you have an option to buy an additional piece of baggage, or add additional 9kg to your existing baggage. Oversized baggage (over 158cm total dimensions) will be charged with a fee.

Additional baggage rates are calculated depending on the time before flight departure when your pre-booking is made (>48h before departure / 48-6h before departure / within 6h to departure).

Most sports equipment and musical instruments count towards your standard free checked baggage allowance. If you exceed your weight or piece limit, standard excess baggage fees apply.

Sports Equipment

The Golden Rules:

  • Weight Limit: No single item can exceed 32kg (safety regulation). 
  • Size Limit: Max dimensions are 200cm x 75cm x 80cm. 
  • Packing: Items (especially bicycles and surfboards) must be in a protective hard case or box. 
  • Prohibited: Motorised bicycles and hoverboards are banned.

  • Bicycles: Must be non-motorised; handle bars fixed sideways, pedals removed. 
  • Scuba: Tanks must be empty; spear guns unloaded. 
  • Inflatables: All balls (soccer, rugby) must be deflated. 

Musical Instruments

You have three ways to fly with your instrument:

  1. Carry-On (Small): Violins can replace your standard cabin bag if they fit standard limits (7kg; 115cm total). 
  2. Purchase a Seat (Large/Valuable): For cellos/guitars up to 40kg. Must not exceed 127cm (H) x 45cm (W) x 30cm (D). Contact SIA to book.
