📒 The Short Answer: What is Scoot's Power Bank Limit?

Cabin only: Power banks are treated as spare lithium batteries and must go in your hand-carry, never in checked baggage.

Under 100Wh: Allowed in cabin, up to Scoot’s general limit of 20 spare lithium batteries per passenger (combined with other spares like camera batteries).

100–160Wh: Maximum of 2 pieces per passenger; must be protected from damage and short circuit; carriage is subject to airline approval.

Above 160Wh: Completely prohibited on Scoot flights, whether carry-on or checked.

No using power bank in flight: you cannot use a power bank to charge your phone, nor charge the power bank itself via USB at your seat during the entire flight.

🧳 Carry-On vs. Checked Luggage: Where You MUST Pack Your Power Bank

power bank only in carry-on luggage

Pack power banks in your carry-on luggage only—never in checked bags. Scoot strictly bans them from checked baggage to comply with Singapore's CAAS safety standards and global IATA rules on lithium batteries. Attempting to check them in risks confiscation at Changi Airport security or boarding gates.

Why Power Banks Are Banned from Checked Luggage

Lithium batteries in power banks can overheat, short-circuit, or catch fire if jostled in the cargo hold, where crew cannot monitor or extinguish them quickly. In checked luggage, they lack protection from damage during rough handling, increasing fire risks in unmonitored areas. Scoot mandates cabin carry-on so passengers keep them visible, protected, and ready for immediate action if issues arise.

📌 Understanding the Rules: Wh vs. mAh Explained

three power banks

Scoot measures power banks in watt-hours (Wh), not mAh—knowing the difference keeps you compliant. Wh tells the true energy capacity using voltage, while mAh alone ignores it and can mislead on limits.

Check your power bank label for both mAh and voltage (usually 3.7V for lithium-ion) to stay under Scoot's 100Wh no-approval cap.

How to Easily Calculate Watt-hours (Wh) for Your Power Bank

Grab your power bank's specs: mAh capacity and voltage (V, often 3.7V). Use this formula: Wh = (mAh × V) / 1000.

Examples: 10,000 mAh at 3.7V = 37 Wh (fine); 27,000 mAh at 3.7V ≈ 100 Wh (max without approval).

✈️ What to Do if Your Power Bank Exceeds the Scoot Limit

Before You Leave for the Airport

  • Calculate Wh first: If over 160Wh, do not bring it to the airport.
  • 100-160Wh? Carry it in your cabin baggage, never in checked luggage. Maximum of 2 pieces per passenger; must be protected from damage and short circuit; carriage is subject to airline approval.

If You're Already at Changi Airport

  • At check-in: Declare it—staff will reject or confiscate over-limit items per Scoot policy.
  • Security scan flags it? Expect disposal in amnesty bins; no return post-flight.
  • Gate boarding? Worst case: denied boarding—leave it with a friend or airport lost property.
