The History of the Hotel Bergwirt Vienna Schönbrunn In 1911, the municipal district office of the Imperial and Royal Capital and Residence City of Vienna granted a building permit for the residential building at Maxingstraße 76, on the corner of Montecuccoliplatz. Built in an elegant Art Nouveau style, the building was adorned with architectural highlights such as a bay window, a loggia, dormers, and a striking tower lantern. History – Hotel Alt Nine spacious apartments were created, each equipped with servants’ quarters and a bathroom—a level of comfort that was groundbreaking at the time. In 1912, the “Zum Bergwirt” inn opened its doors and quickly established itself as a popular destination, located near Elisabethallee on the Küniglberg. The inn was furnished with rustic Swiss stone pine rooms and offered its guests a cozy atmosphere. To this day, the stone face of Bacchus, the god of wine and the joy of life, invites visitors to linger right next to the front door. In 1959, Monika and Franz Grauer took over the “Zum Bergwirt” inn as tenants and eventually purchased the residence in 1968. With great dedication and vision, they expanded the business in the following years to include a cozy parlor and a coffeehouse, offering guests even more comfort and enjoyment. In 1978, the renovation of the building into a modern hotel began. The result was a stylish hotel with 24 rooms (58 beds), each equipped with a bathroom, TV, minibar, and telephone. In 1987, the impressive Elisabeth Salon was added in the basement, which is ideal for weddings and family celebrations for up to 90 people. In addition, a charming Art Nouveau hotel bar was opened, which continues to welcome guests from all over the world to this day. In 2005, the family handed over the historic property to their youngest daughter, Elisabeth Grauer-Stopfer. Together with her older sister, Anna Rischer, she has been running the business with great dedication and passion ever since. The sisters’ well-coordinated team is guiding the family-run business into the modern era without losing sight of traditional Viennese hospitality. Between 2005 and 2006, a comprehensive modernization took place. Not only were a new elevator system and a stylish reception area installed, but the guest rooms were also brought up to date. Freshly renovated and modernly equipped, the hotel now shines in new splendor and offers its guests contemporary comfort. But the story doesn’t end here—renovations are carried out on an ongoing basis and innovative ideas are brought to life to ensure guests always have a truly special experience.
