Alipay Guide for Singapore Travellers: How to Use It, Where It Works, and Why It Matters

Author's Profile Picture
Alipay Singapore Poster

If you are planning a trip to China or even exploring cashless payments in Asia, Alipay is something you will likely come across.

Many travellers from Singapore are now using it because it makes daily spending simple, fast, and more convenient than carrying cash.

This guide explains how Alipay works, how to set it up as a visitor, and what you should know before using it on your trip.

What is Alipay

Alipay App Display

Alipay is a mobile payment app created by Ant Group. It is widely used across China for almost everything, from buying food to taking public transport.

Instead of using cash or cards, you pay by scanning a QR code. This is why many shops in China no longer accept cash as often as before.

Why Singapore Travellers Use Alipay

Alipay Singapore Life

Many Singapore travellers prefer Alipay because it solves common travel problems.

Key benefits:

  • No need to carry large amounts of cash
  • Easy payment even at small shops and street stalls
  • Works for transport, food, shopping, and attractions
  • Some places do not accept foreign credit cards but accept Alipay

In real situations, you may find that a small noodle shop or a taxi only accepts QR payment. Having Alipay makes things much smoother.

How to Set Up Alipay as a Tourist

Alipay Setup Guide.

Setting up Alipay is quite simple and can be done before your trip.

  1. Download Alipay from the App Store or Google Play
  2. Sign up using your Singapore mobile number and create your account
  3. Switch the app to English for easier navigation
  4. Complete identity verification using your passport details
  5. Add your Singapore issued credit or debit card for international payments
  6. Enable the international payment feature or Tour Pass in the app
  7. Set a payment password or enable face or fingerprint unlock for security
  8. Test the app by exploring features or making a small payment if available
  9. Make sure your bank allows overseas transactions to avoid payment issues
🚨Pro Tips: Complete your account setup, passport verification, and card linking before you travel. This avoids last minute issues when you are already overseas and need to make a payment quickly.

Where You Can Use Alipay

Alipay Singapore Usage

Alipay is accepted almost everywhere in China and SIngapore.

Common places include:

  • Restaurants and cafes
  • Shopping malls and retail stores
  • Street food stalls
  • Taxis and ride services
  • Tourist attractions

Even small vendors often display an Alipay QR code, making it very easy to pay.

💡 Pro Tip: Even though Alipay is widely accepted, keep a credit card or some cash with you. This helps in rare cases where digital payment is not available or if your app has connection issues.

Tips for Using Alipay Smoothly

Alipay QR Payment.

Using Alipay is simple, but a few smart habits can make your experience much better during your trip.

  • Make sure you have internet access when making payments, especially when scanning QR codes
  • Save a screenshot of your payment QR code so you can still pay if your connection is slow
  • Bring a small amount of cash as backup for rare cases where digital payment is not available
  • Check your transaction history regularly to keep track of your spending
  • Inform your bank before your trip to avoid card linking or payment issues
  • Keep your phone charged as you will rely on it for most payments throughout the day
  • Use secure WiFi or mobile data when making payments to avoid connection risks
💡 Pro Tip: Check Trip.com’s promo code page before confirming your booking. You might find an extra 10–20% off hotels or flights.

Riverside/ Clarke Quay Singapore|2.11km from downtown
This is a long-standing five-star hotel in Singapore. I stayed here for eight nights this time. It's my top choice for business and family trips to Singapore, offering great value for money. **Excellent Location** The location is superb. Right opposite the hotel exit is an MRT station. Although it's not a major line, it's convenient to get anywhere with a quick transfer. Within five or six minutes' walk, there's a large shopping center, The Great World, which has plenty of dining, shopping, and local specialty food options. The surrounding area is also a hub for tourist attractions, easily reachable by taxi or a few MRT stops. **Hotel Design** Given its five-star heritage and recent renovation, the rooms and hotel interior are very new and spacious. I was particularly impressed by the in-room coffee machine and water dispenser. Enjoying a rich cup of coffee while getting ready in the morning [smiley emoji] is a lovely touch. **Hotel Facilities** The swimming pool, gym, conference rooms, and restaurants are all well-equipped. **Service** I didn't get much chance to experience the service as I came back late and was out all day. My only minor complaint is the poor soundproofing. Perhaps it was because I was next to a door that seemed to lead nowhere, and the opening/closing sounds were loud. I could also hear cleaning staff making noise in the mornings. However, the front desk handled it very well, and they were much more careful afterward.

F We had a pleasant 1-night family stay at PARKROYAL COLLECTION Pickering, Singapore. The hotel made a strong first impression with its beautiful greenery, distinctive architecture and calm resort-like atmosphere despite being located right in the city. For families, the location is a major advantage. It is convenient, central and close to Chinatown, Clarke Quay and public transport, which made it easy for us to move around without feeling rushed. The hotel environment felt safe, clean and well maintained, which is always important when staying with children. The room was comfortable for a short stay, with good amenities and a relaxing ambience. The greenery around the hotel gave it a refreshing feel, and the pool area was a highlight for the family. It offered a nice space to unwind after a day out, and the overall setting felt more like a city retreat than a typical business hotel. Service was generally warm and professional. The staff were courteous and helpful, and check-in and check-out were smooth. For a 1-night stay, the experience was easy and fuss-free. Overall, PARKROYAL COLLECTION Pickering is a good choice for a short family staycation or city stay in Singapore. It combines convenience, comfort and a unique garden-hotel concept. We would recommend it especially for families who want a central location but still appreciate a relaxing, green and visually beautiful hotel environment.

Overall, I'm very satisfied. The location is convenient; the nearest subway station is just a short walk away, and there's a 7-Eleven nearby, which is very handy. **Facilities:** There's only one power outlet under one of the nightstands, and the room lighting is a bit dim. **Hygiene:** The showerhead might be a bit old. **Environment:** Excellent. The decor is very modern and distinctive. **Service:** Great. Whether staff who speak Chinese are available depends on the shift.

First time staying at Pan Pacific 3D2N stay was pleasant. As we book connecting room , and have to wait a bit longer for our other room to be ready the reception display their best professionalism to accommodate. The room was spacious, mini fridge filled with drinks and chocolate reserve for guests for quick snack. Like the motorized curtains. The amenities like coffee machine come in handy for a good coffee. Our high floor panoramic city view room, we did manage to catch a glimpse of the Singapore flyer, marina bay sands from outside our room which is a breath taking view. Hope we get to book marina view next time. The pool was big and my kids enjoy relaxing and swimming. The foot reflexology treatment was relaxing and comforting. Overall I'm delighted with my staycation from the moment we arrive, we were welcome and greeted by the bell attendant, front reception, even check out was smooth and till our departure the hotel staff hospitality has treated us well. On side note if room service food/halal breakfast spread is available would be added advantage for Muslim guests. 👍👍

The location is excellent! It's a 5-minute walk to the Merlion and also a 5-minute walk to the MRT station. The staff outside are very enthusiastic about helping with taxis, and I didn't feel any discrimination based on skin color at all. The hotel itself is a tourist attraction in Singapore. The rooms are spacious, and the price is quite reasonable compared to similar hotels. There's a wide variety of breakfast options, and dining outdoors (though it can be a bit hot) offers absolutely stunning views. We were given a S$100 voucher but unfortunately didn't get to use it due to time constraints. Overall, our two-night stay was a great experience!

The hotel isn't too far from two subway stations. However, if it's your first time staying, be sure to note that the pick-up/drop-off point for taxis is on the second floor. The gym and laundry room are on the third floor. There are two washers and dryers, and you can pay for laundry with a credit card. The gym has a good selection of dumbbells with various weights, and two treadmills that support three languages.

I stayed at Lyf Funan Singapore for 2nights as a business traveller. The design is fun and colorful, not your typical hotel vibe. The room is compact but works fine, with a private bathroom, and the sink is outside the bathroom which is actually quite convenient. I stayed in a standard room—it’s okay for couples or friends. The hotel has more of a co-living feel. There’s a shared kitchen, dining area, and even a small workout corner, so it feels more social than a normal hotel. Breakfast was a bitsimple with limited options, just a few simple dishes and some bakery items. I’d recommend skipping it and eating outside instead. Location is definitely a big plus. It’s inside Funan Mall, super convenient for shopping and food. You can also easily walk to places like Fort Canning Park (right across the road), Clarke Quay, and Merlion Park. Overall, nice stay if you like modern design and a lively vibe—just don’t expect too much from the breakfast.

The hotel's location is excellent, with a subway station right outside the door and another line a few hundred meters away that goes to Chinatown. It's about an 800-meter walk to the Fort Canning tree tunnel (a popular photo spot), and from there you can continue on to the Old Hill Street Police Station (also known as the Rainbow Police Station), Clarke Quay, and the Merlion. The room size is a definite advantage compared to other hotels in the same price range; there's plenty of space to walk even with two large suitcases. The bathroom size is standard as well. The downside is that the bathroom fixtures are quite old, and the shower is difficult to use. However, I was aware of this beforehand, so I was prepared, and given the other advantages, it's acceptable. The bedding is good, and the sofa is quite comfortable. Among the toiletries, only the shampoo, shower gel, and toothbrush weren't great; everything else was fine. The room has a kettle and comes with tea and coffee packets. There's also a water dispenser in the hallway where you can get iced or room temperature water. The hotel breakfast is decent, on par with business hotels in China. However, the service is excellent; they diligently restock drinks and food even at the last minute, even if there are only a few people dining. There are washing machines and dryers on the fourth floor, each costing 5 SGD, and you can get change for coins at the front desk. The commercial machines work very well; the dryer gets clothes completely dry in 40 minutes. There are also ironing facilities in the room. Overall, I recommend this hotel. If you have a higher budget, you might look elsewhere, but if you're looking for great value for money at this price point, you should definitely consider it.

I stayed here for one night on a business trip, as it was conveniently located. It seems to be a hotel with a design aesthetic from the '50s; the decor is very thoughtfully put together, like a pipe organ with a hollow center. All the corridors overlook the lobby below, similar to the Legendale Hotel in Beijing, creating a beautiful sense of intricate, overlapping complexity. The location is excellent, just a seven or eight-minute walk to the Merlion. From Jubilee Bridge, you can gaze at Marina Bay Sands and the entire Marina Bay area. The lobby is on the fourth floor. The elevators are quiet and fast, and the front desk offers Chinese-speaking service. The Wi-Fi is speedy. Although the windows provide excellent sound insulation, with Marina Bay Sands and Marina Bay right outside, it's inevitable that it gets a little noisy at night. Overall, it was a satisfactory one-night stay. I didn't have time to experience breakfast or the pool.

The hotel is a 5-10 minute walk from Havelock MRT station, offering convenient transportation and a variety of dining options, from seafood restaurants to budget fast-food joints. It's also not far from Chinatown and Orchard Road. The room size is decent, which is quite good for Singapore. The hotel's exterior looks grand, but the interior of the rooms is a bit old-fashioned. Particularly, there's only a bathtub, which even has long-standing water stains. The room amenities are on par with a basic budget hotel.

Hi, for all who’s searching for CAR PARK, please park at the nearest one raffles place during the weekends. It’s literally a life saver. It’s a flat rate. (yall will thank me) DO NOT PARK AT HONGLEONG BUILDING. The building is outside the MRT. Super awesome location. Love it. Slightly old on the interiors but so far all is very well maintained. Didn’t try the breakfast tho.

The hotel's location is perfect! It's within a 10-minute walk to two light shows, a shopping mall, and the MRT station. Our room had a stunning view of Gardens by the Bay, and from the rooftop observation deck and infinity pool, you get amazing 360-degree panoramic views day and night. Excellent Business Stay at Swissôtel The Stamford I booked the 2 Balcony King Suite and was thoroughly impressed. The suite is spacious at around 40m², with a large dedicated workspace and high‑speed internet that made my online meetings seamless. The dual balconies offered spectacular views of the city skyline — a refreshing backdrop between calls. The hotel’s location in the CBD is unbeatable: steps away from great dining and drinks options, making it easy to unwind after a packed business day. The room design balances comfort and functionality, with plenty of natural light and thoughtful amenities. Overall, Swissôtel The Stamford delivers exactly what a business traveller needs — convenience, connectivity, and comfort — all wrapped in a premium experience. Sentosa Island Singapore|4.92km from downtown
I was impressed from start to finish with my Siloso Beach Resort experience. I arrived at Vivo City Harbourfront Station by train, suitcase in hand and was directed to the Sentosa Monorail on the top floor. There is a kiosk where I received my complimentary rail pass to Beach Ststion (last stop). Behind the train station is a free shuttle service which dropped me directly outside the Resort. Up to level 8 to complete my check-in which was conducted smoothly by the friendly desk team. They provided clear instructions for the ongoing use of monorail on the island and the free shuttle services around the island attractions. I received a cool upgrade and proceeded to my room which was clean and then refreshed each day. The location opposite the beach and a 7 minute walk to the train station which is surrounded by food outlets and stores to cater for your convenience. The team at Siloso Beach Resort enjoy their work and were always eager to assist with any enquiries, provision of umbrella or any guidance with onsite matters. The pool was fabulous with waterfall and slide for kids of all sizes. The place was quiet and well presented. I will be visiting again in the future.
