Understanding Tokyo Typhoon Season

Japan does not have a fixed typhoon season, as tropical cyclones can form at different times of the year. However, typhoon activity in the western North Pacific is much higher from summer into early autumn.

According to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), an average of 25.1 tropical cyclones formed each year between 1991 and 2020, with formation peaking in August at 5.7 and September at 5.0 per year.

For Tokyo, August and September are the key months to watch although July and October can also see typhoon impacts.

August and September can be particularly important for travellers because they combine higher typhoon activity with warm, humid weather and heavier rainfall.

This does not mean that every August or September trip will be rainy. Tokyo can still have plenty of sunny days. The main issue is that one approaching typhoon can affect flights, trains and outdoor plans for several hours or longer, depending on its track or strength.

What Happens in Tokyo When a Typhoon Hits?

A typhoons does not automatically shut down the whole of Tokyo.

The impact can range from rain and train delays to widespread and service suspensions, flight cancellations and temporary closures of attractions.

For tourists, transport is one of the biggest concerns. Tokyo has an extensive rail network but strong winds and heavy rain can affect both above-ground and underground services.

During strong winds, trains may have to reduce speed or temporarily suspend operations, and services on above-ground sections can be halted for longer periods when a typhoon approaches.

Haneda and Narita Flight Disruptions During Typhoon Season

If you are flying from Singapore to Tokyo, your flight may arrive at or depart from Haneda Airport or Narita International Airport.

During a typhoon, airlines may change schedules based on weather, airport conditions and operational requirements.

The important thing is to check:

Your airline's latest flight status
The airport's official flight information
Any notifications sent to your booking email or app
Ground transport availability before travelling to the airport

Do not head to the airport based only on an old departure time shown on your original booking.

What to Do in Tokyo During a Typhoon

A rainy day does not necessarily mean you need to stay inside your hotel for the entire day.

If conditions are safe and there are no instructions to stay indoors, Tokyo has plenty of indoor attractions, shopping centres, museums and entertainment facilities.

However, during the strongest part of a typhoon, staying indoors is usually the safer choice. Avoid unnecessary travel especially around rivers, coastal areas and places exposed to strong winds.

By far the nicest room out of the three we stayed at on this trip. Cozy but spacious with everything you need inside. My only gripe is the check in process. You cannot check in one second before 2 pm. I understand a lot of hotels do this but not all of them and it creates chaos all at once. We were directed to machines to self check in and despite the fact I filled out all the information in advance which generated a QR code, when I used that code at the kiosk, half of the information had to be reentered. Even though our papers scanned on the machines, they still had to take them to enter info manually and at the end, we ended up being redirected to a check in counter with a human. Frustrating check in process took 25 mins. That aside the staff were very helpful with our bags and the area surrounding the hotel is great.

I've stayed at the Hilton Tokyo Bay and the Hilton Osaka Umeda before, both of which were good experiences. However, the Odaiba location this time left the deepest impression. It's directly connected to the Odaiba Station on the Yurikamome Line, and with Aqua City and DiverCity Tokyo Plaza nearby, dining and shopping are incredibly convenient. From the hotel, you can see the Statue of Liberty and the Rainbow Bridge, and the views are stunning both day and night.

Room and bed were very comfortable, immaculately clean and modern. 2 mins walk from train station, if you need lift access to train then a 6 mins walk, we had a stroller. Breakfast was a bit of a zoo, we went during Christmas, very busy! But tables were spacious so even though there were so many people you don’t feel cramped. Good variety of food selection. We had dinner at the Japanese teppanyaki restaurant. Delicious, especially the tuna salad. I found the lobby staff a little lack of personality, at check in, no mentioning of where breakfast will be, what time check out is. Just checked you in and that’s it, no personal notes in the room. When I expressed I’ve lost my phone at the shop in Tokyo, no sign of empathy (it was a western male staff) no gesture of helpfulness, very cold and robotic. This goes for concierge also, he is an older western gentleman, he needs to use Google translate also which is frustrating cause I could do exactly the same research with Google translate. Overall, hardware is solid, need to fine tune the staff, sprinkle a little bit of personality in them.

The location of this hotel is simply unbeatable, right next to Tokyo Station. You don't even need to go above ground; there's a dedicated hotel elevator in the Otemachi exit underground, which is incredibly convenient. However, if you're transferring to other subway lines, expect about an 8-minute walk for most of them. Also, a heads-up: the front desk is on the 7th floor, but there's a hotel sign on the ground floor for taxi drop-offs. Since the hotel is right by Tokyo Station, you have easy access to all sorts of food, drinks, and shopping, which is why I didn't bother with the hotel breakfast. I could sleep in every day and try different local delicacies. Even the FamilyMart convenience store had amazing food options. It's an older hotel that was renovated last year, but the facilities are complete, clean, and comfortable. What I particularly liked was the shower setup; unlike some hotels where you shower inside the tub, here they have a separate shower space next to the tub. This design makes the bathroom feel quite spacious, even if the room itself is on the smaller side. I've seen this kind of bathroom design in other Japanese hotels too, so I wonder if it's a common feature in local accommodations. The front desk staff spoke good English, and I was very satisfied with their luggage storage and early check-in services. Plus, you need your room card to operate the elevators, which adds to the security. I was out and about from morning till night, so I didn't get a chance to experience the restaurant or bar, but overall, the value for money is high. I'd definitely consider staying here again on my next trip to Tokyo! It's perfect for anyone who values convenience, loves shopping, and isn't too particular about room size.

Given its prime location, you can't expect both spaciousness and a cheap price. The value for money is decent. However, the room felt stuffy and relied solely on the air conditioning, which created a stale smell, as if it had been closed up for a long time. I had to keep the AC on low. I'm unsure about the cleanliness of the duvet; my legs were incredibly itchy for the first half of the night. It only got better after I turned the AC much lower in the latter half. One of the pillows had a strong, hard-to-describe oily head smell. There was also a noticeable accumulation of dust in some corners. The service throughout was genuinely cold. Despite my fluent Japanese, there wasn't a single smile, which is quite unusual for Japan. Perhaps working in Ginza is truly exhausting. They didn't mention the complimentary beer and coffee that was advertised on Ctrip. Ms. Akiko at the front desk, this kind of service really isn't acceptable in the hospitality industry. If you feel so wronged by your job, maybe you should find a different one.

Attending the Tokyo Fisheries Expo, I chose to stay at the Daiwa Roynet Hotel in Ginza, and it was an excellent experience! The hotel is clean, hygienic, and the breakfast is abundant, with delicious grilled mackerel and silver salmon. They even provide Kose Sekkisei and DHC toiletries every night, which is a nice touch! The location is incredibly convenient; you can walk to Tokyo Station and Marunouchi. From Tokyo Station, it's easy to catch a bus to Kisarazu Outlet, which is very convenient – a round trip costs just 3000 JPY and takes only 50 minutes one way. There are plenty of shops and restaurants nearby, including OK Supermarket, BEAMS, MONT-BELL, PATAGONIA, SAPPORO DRAFT BLACK, Mitsukoshi, GINZA NOVO, and GINZA777, covering all your eating, drinking, playing, and shopping needs! **Environment**: The environment is quiet with good soundproofing, ensuring a good night's sleep. **Service**: As expected from Japanese hotels, the service was excellent, with friendly and smiling staff. **Facilities**: All facilities were sufficient, including a microwave, ice maker, vending machines, luggage weighing scale, and coffee machine. **Cleanliness**: Housekeeping was prompt and excellent. Ginza itself is a fantastic area, with countless bars, cafes, Ippudo ramen, and Tonkatsu restaurants to explore. For transportation, you have the Yurakucho Line, Ginza Line, Keikyu Line, and many other options, making it quick and easy to get to Asakusa, Daikanyama, Nakameguro, Shibuya, Harajuku, Omotesando, and even a jazz cafe in Yotsuya. I will definitely stay in Ginza again next time!

Everyone knows how it is with Tokyo hotels – you open your suitcase and there's no room to move. But that's definitely not the case at the Shiomi Prince. We had a triple room with three beds, and it still didn't feel cramped, which is a huge plus in Tokyo. The hotel itself isn't a traditional business hotel either; it has a strong sense of design. You can see the thought put into it right from the lobby: a massive modern art mural, high ceilings, low-saturation furniture, and even Japanese parasol decorations, blending modern design with traditional elements. It doesn't feel like they just piled on luxurious materials for the sake of it, but rather it's youthful, stylish, and has a touch of an art hotel. It's easy to snap some great photos there. What truly impressed me, though, was the breakfast. The breakfast selection itself was very rich, with plenty of Japanese, Western, hot dishes, vegetables, eggs, rice, and other options. But two things, in particular, are worth mentioning. One was the limited-edition bluefin tuna sashimi. It's rare to find bluefin tuna at a hotel breakfast, and here it was prepared by a chef on the spot. Even though it's limited, this kind of offering immediately sets it apart from a typical hotel buffet breakfast. The other thing I liked even more: the DIY onsen egg and beef bowl. You lay the beef over hot rice, then add two soft, runny onsen eggs. With a poke of the chopsticks, the orange yolk flows directly into the beef and rice, and it smells incredibly fragrant when mixed. For my breakfast, I'd also have bacon, fried eggs, broccoli, and pumpkin, followed by coffee with a muffin or doughnut – a full boost of energy to start the day.

We also were able to utilize the Poppins onsite daycare although this is run independently and you should book well in advance of your trip as only 1 day that we requested was available for booking. The hotel's location is excellent; you can see it right after exiting Odaiba Station on the Yurikamome Line. You can even wheel your luggage directly from the platform to the hotel lobby. The rooms offer fantastic views, either facing the Odaiba Rainbow Bridge or the ocean. Iconic landmarks and attractions like the Gundam statue, Statue of Liberty, and Rainbow Bridge are all within walking distance, and Fuji TV is right across the street. For dining, you have three restaurant choices. The sushi restaurant on the 30th floor offers a set menu, not a buffet, and there are no self-service soft drinks. For getting around, the Yurikamome Line is your best bet. If you head out early and return late, you'll be traveling against the peak hour traffic, and since the hotel is at the line's terminus, you'll almost always get a seat, which is a huge plus.

Room facilities: There were few real pictures of the Ctrip Deluxe Twin Room, but the actual room was quite spacious. Crucially, it had hardwood floors instead of carpet, which felt much cleaner. The hotel is very close to all the Ginza shopping malls, making for a comfortable stay. A minor drawback was the showerhead, which was very difficult to adjust and quite high; it took some getting used to, but the water pressure was excellent and the water was hot. The hairdryer was a Refa, which was super comfortable and quick to use! Location: The hotel is within a 5-19 minute walk to major Ginza shopping malls. It's a bit further from Tokyo Station, about a 12-minute walk. It's very convenient to buy things and bring them back to the hotel. Service: The hotel front desk staff were all very enthusiastic. You could get free foot patches, facial masks, and toiletry sets, as well as complimentary water, which was a huge help. We stayed for six days, and on the morning of August 6th or 7th, a Japanese staff member, Mr./Ms. Ota (I didn't catch the exact name), came to our room to deliver water. He communicated with us in English using a translator, and when we mentioned wanting to dispose of our trash immediately, he proactively took on the task of room cleaning and helped us take out the garbage. I give him a big thumbs up and hope the hotel recognizes his professionalism, dedication, and thoughtful service! I also want to express my gratitude to him here and hope the hotel sees this! Overall, I highly recommend this hotel. (Japanese portion of the original review, for context and full translation): We stayed for 6 days this time. On the morning of August 6th or 7th, a Japanese staff member, Mr./Ms. Ota (I apologize for not remembering the name accurately), brought water to our room. He communicated with us in English using a translator, and when we told him we wanted to dispose of trash immediately, he readily offered to take care of the garbage collection and kindly handled the room cleaning instead. I want to give him a very high rating from the bottom of my heart. I sincerely hope the hotel also recognizes his professional, serious, and thoughtful excellent service! Once again, I would like to express my gratitude to him here and hope this comment reaches the attention of the hotel management!

Perched atop this magnificent skyscraper, Aman Tokyo, which stunned the world a decade ago, remains an unparalleled benchmark for modern city hotels. ｜The soaring 30-meter high atrium, crafted with washi lanterns, wood textures, and concrete and rock, creates a 'dry landscape' garden in the urban clouds. ｜The view facing the Imperial Palace is arguably Tokyo's most beautiful skyline (it ruthlessly trumps the already impressive view from the neighboring Bulgari). ｜While the ambiance at Arva, the Italian restaurant on the other side of the lobby, is superb, the food wasn't to my taste. I'd recommend the Aman Cafe on the first floor, a glasshouse enveloped by the 'Otemachi Forest' oasis instead.

The room offered a view of Tokyo Tower, which I was very pleased with! Since it was my birthday, I had mentioned it in advance, and the hotel emailed me about a surprise. Upon checking in, I found they had left a few small cookies, which was a lovely touch. However, upon entering the room, there was an old, hard-to-describe smell. This smell wasn't present near the bed. (I had read reviews upon checking in and noticed this wasn't an isolated incident.) Check-in was at 3 PM, and I arrived around 3:10 PM. There was a huge line for check-in, and I didn't get into my room until after 4 PM. This service was very poor; it's the first time I've encountered such a situation, and I hope the hotel improves. Personally, I felt the overall service attitude of the hotel wasn't particularly enthusiastic, and all the staff seemed to treat guests differently. The toilet in the bathroom was also old. It's hard to imagine this is a hotel renovated in 2018?

I’d wanted to stay at this hotel for a long time and loved the idea of a traditional-style hotel right in the heart of Tokyo. The staff were very friendly, and I was happy to get a room on a higher floor as I had requested. The room itself was very small and felt a bit outdated. For this price range, I expected a little more. However, the window — definitely the highlight of the room — offered an incredible view of the city. The onsen was quite small, but wow. Being able to relax in an outdoor bath right in the center of Tokyo while looking out at the city was an amazing experience. The breakfast was also very good.

I had a wonderful stay at Onyado Nono Asakusa. The hotel has a beautiful traditional Japanese atmosphere, and I really liked the tatami flooring throughout the property. Everything was very clean, comfortable, and well maintained. The onsen was definitely one of the highlights after a long day of walking around Tokyo. I also loved the little complimentary touches, especially the late-night ramen and ice cream after the onsen! The location is very convenient for exploring Asakusa and is within walking distance of Senso-ji and many restaurants and shops. Despite being in a busy area, the hotel felt peaceful and relaxing. The staff were polite and helpful throughout my stay. Overall, it was a very comfortable and enjoyable experience, and I would definitely stay at Onyado Nono Asakusa again on my next trip to Tokyo. Highly recommended!

[HOSHINOYA Tokyo: A Vertical Ryokan Experience] HOSHINOYA Tokyo offers a truly unique concept. It is a traditional Japanese ryokan built vertically within a modern skyscraper, located in the prestigious Otemachi district. It provides a serene, luxurious escape right in the middle of the bustling city, perfectly blending classic ryokan hospitality with world-class modern design. We enjoyed a wonderful three-day, two-night stay at the property from 29 May to 31 May. We chose not to make any meal reservations, which gave us the flexibility to simply relax and explore the surrounding city. [Getting There] We travelled from Fufu Hakone via a day trip to Enoshima and Kamakura. We took a direct train from Kamakura to Tokyo Station, followed by a short walk to the hotel, and arrived at around 8:00 PM. To make the transit completely effortless, our luggage was picked up and delivered directly to the hotel by LuggAgent on the same day. [Arrival and Check-In] The hotel is situated in the central business district and distinctly stands out from the surrounding buildings. The discreet entrance completely shields you from the busy streets. Upon entering, staff immediately store your shoes, as the entire tatami-matted building operates on a barefoot or socks-only policy. We were incredibly lucky to catch a traditional jap instrument performance, which is usually reserved for weekends. A designated staff member managed our check-in with welcome snack & tea and escorted us to level 15. A major highlight is the exclusive lounge on each floor, shared by only 6 suites. It functions as a private living room, fully stocked with complimentary seasonal teas, coffees, and traditional snacks. [The Suite] We stayed in the Sakura suite. Rather than trying to describe the beautiful layout in words, I will let my photos speak for themselves. The beds are low to the floor with a mid-level hardness that we found quite comfortable, and each bed comes with two soft pillows. There is also a television cleverly hidden behind a mirror, though it is worth noting that it only broadcasts Japanese channels. We kept it switched off to maintain the consistent traditional ryokan feel. The provided yukata is absolutely superb. It comes as a full set complete with an inner layer, an outer layer, socks, and a small handbag. The material is soft, stretchy, and incredibly comfortable for lounging and walking around the property. [The Top-Floor Onsen] Having a natural hot spring in central Tokyo is a rare luxury. The onsen is located on the 17th floor and features a stunning design where the roof is open to the sky. As cameras are strictly prohibited, you will have to visualise it or check the hotel website for gallery photos. I understand that the bath is a salty hot spring containing a high concentration of seawater and seaweed minerals trapped deep in the ground. Soaking in this soothing water gently embraces the skin and helps alleviate fatigue in both body and mind. The onsen is open daily from 3:00 PM to 11:30 AM. It was the absolute perfect way to warm up and recharge before we headed out for a busy day. [Areas for Improvement] Toothbrush Set: The provided toothbrush is far too small and takes ages to use. I strongly recommend bringing your own.

This is our second time staying here. The hotel is right next to the Ariake Garden mall, practically seamlessly connected. There are plenty of dining options upstairs and shopping is very convenient. Downstairs, there's a large Aeon supermarket, and right outside its exit, at platform 1, you can catch the bus to Haneda Airport. There's also a big Muji store nearby. The hotel offers a free shuttle bus to Ginza from its basement level. While the hotel is situated between two subway lines, neither is too far away, making this location excellent value for money. We booked a family room for two adults and two children, which had four beds. The bathroom and toilet were separate (wet and dry areas), and the room layout was quite good.

After exiting the station, it was just a 5-minute walk to the hotel. The room size wasn't too small; there was still enough space to open one large suitcase and one small suitcase. There's a Family Mart, Lawson, Starbucks, 7-Eleven, and a pharmacy close to the hotel, which is very convenient. The hotel offers an onsen, washing machine/dryer, vending machine, microwave, luggage lockers (for before and after check-in), a fitness center, and a cafe, all within the premises. It's excellent!

Relabo Hotel boasts an excellent location right next to the JR station. From the station's third floor, there's a direct walkway leading to an elevator that takes you straight to the hotel's 4th-floor front desk. It's incredibly convenient. Nearby, you'll find the Apple Factory and the Nebuta Museum, and downstairs there's a department store for shopping and dining. A highlight of the hotel is its hot springs, and they also offer some yoga activities, though we didn't participate as we don't speak Japanese. Guests can enjoy the hot springs for free, and female guests are personally escorted into the bathing area by staff, which feels very safe. After a soak, you can grab an ice cream or head to the observation deck to enjoy the view with some crackers and apple juice – a truly leisurely holiday experience. The room was comfortable and quiet with ample space for luggage, offering city views and a glimpse of the ocean bridge. The scenery at sunset was particularly beautiful. The staff were all very pleasant, especially the restaurant staff during breakfast, who were absolutely outstanding!

It provided seamless access to all the places I wanted to visit, including Ginza, Tokyo Station, the Imperial Palace, Azabudai Hills, and Shibuya. On top of that, the vibrant izakayas surrounding the hotel were so inviting that I wished I could visit them all. Without a doubt, I will choose this hotel again for my next trip to Tokyo. I visited Tokyo with my 88-year-old father. The hotel’s location is arguably the absolute best, making it incredibly convenient to visit Tokyo’s major attractions. The hotel facilities were also highly satisfying. First and foremost, the amenities in the guest room were excellent, and the thoughtful accessibility considerations for the elderly or infirm gave us great peace of mind. For instance, the provision of a bath chair with a backrest was very impressive. The hygiene and meticulous housekeeping were of the highest standard. Furthermore, the non-slip mat provided in the bathroom clearly reflected a deep consideration for the guests' specific needs. All of this, of course, is a testament to the staff’s proactive service and attentive care. If there was one minor disappointment, I wish a wider variety of pillows had been available in the room. In this regard, I felt it fell slightly short of meeting guests' diverse preferences. Additionally, as a helpful suggestion for safety, designing bathroom doors to open outward to facilitate emergency access in case of an accident inside is a fundamental design principle for luxury hotels. While preventing accidents altogether is ideal, being fully prepared for emergencies is what sets the highest standard of excellence. On another note, despite the hotel being located within a major railway station, there was absolutely no noise. The soundproofing was truly remarkable. The breakfast offered a rich and diverse selection, beautifully balancing traditional Japanese cuisine with Western options. While ordering a more unique or specialized beverage took a bit of time, the quality and taste were highly satisfying. The other facilities, particularly the restaurants and cafes, were exceptionally calm, elegant, and quiet, providing a very pleasant experience. The food, of course, tasted excellent. However, you must ensure you have ample time to enjoy it; it can require a significant amount of time and patience before the food is served in front of you. Overall, our experience was exceptionally satisfying and wonderful. With its rich historical background and narrative, the hotel offered a deeply engaging and far from boring stay.

The location, however, is excellent—just a 2-minute walk from the metro station, making it super easy to get around. Overall, a solid choice for a short stay in Roppongi.

Instead of clearing the room, the housekeeper consistently left trash behind after cleaning. Day1 The housekeeper actually stuffed a piece of paper waste into the room card slot. Day 2 The trash remained unclean. Day 3 The housekeeper even left their own dirty cleaning towel right next to the bathroom sink. （see the picture) As a guest, I expected a high standard of hygiene and professionalism, but these incidents have made my stay quite uncomfortable.

They took quite some time and some more customers were queuing behind us for check out. When it came to our turn, the female staff immediately changed her smile to poker face and accused us for being late as the time was already 11:40am even though we clearly arrived earlier than that. She wanted to charge us extra but we insisted. Her attitude was very rude and made us feel super uncomfortable.

The front desk service is excellent; many international guests stay here, and the staff's English is almost accent-free. The toilet and shower are separate, and the sink is in another room, which is great for those who like to take their time in the restroom. The room comes equipped with a fridge, microwave, dehumidifier, safe, and even pots, bowls, chopsticks, and spoons. The hotel's surroundings are very quiet, and it's right next to the Washington Hotel. If you're coming from Narita Airport, the airport limousine bus has a dedicated stop there. Just one block away, there's a street food area that's open until the early hours, making dining, accommodation, and transportation super easy. The room has two beds and a bunk bed, perfect for families with multiple children.
