Things to Do in Chengdu

Visiting Chengdu for the first time feels like stepping into a world that’s both familiar and refreshingly different. I expected the city to be a bustling, high-tech hub, but Chengdu’s pace is more laid-back, with wide streets lined by Sichuan-style teahouses and food stalls. The vibrant food scene—full of bold, spicy flavours—immediately stood out.

Chengdu weather can be unpredictable, with chilly winters and humid summers, but it’s perfect for outdoor exploration. The best time to visit Chengdu is during spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November).

Chengdu offers great value without compromising on quality. You’ll find fantastic eats at affordable prices, shop in modern malls or traditional markets, and unwind at luxurious spas without breaking the bank. What to do in Chengdu? Let’s dive into the must-try activities!

Chengdu is not only full of cultural attractions, but also has premium shopping malls that provide shopping experiences, entertainment, fashion, art and lifestyle. Chengdu's food is also delicious for Thais like us and is also affordable. There is one thing that we really like in Chengdu: strawberries. Everyone, they are sweet, crispy, and super cheap. They are very easy to find. Another thing that you can't miss is the spicy stick mala. Finish with Heytee tea, it's so awesome!

🚘IFS Chengdu is located in the center of Chengdu, making it convenient to travel. Just call DiDi and it takes about 30-50 minutes.

If you are looking to savour Chengdu cuisine in a setting that is a little more special, 诸葛酿 is definitely worth a visit. Located along the bustling Chunxi Street, this themed restaurant stands out with its striking, grand exterior—complete with a short stairway leading up to its entrance. Just follow your map and you won’t miss it.

As soon as we stepped inside, we were greeted by an impressive towering wall of preserved jars that stretches from the second floor all the way down to the first. It is quite the sight and sets the tone for what’s to come. We chose to dine on the second floor to enjoy a view overlooking the street below.

The menu is extensive, and we took the chance to try dishes we had never encountered in Singapore—because why not, right? One of the highlights was their signature Guoba Chicken, served in a heated wooden jar. At first, we did not realise there was a ‘correct’ way to eat it—we eagerly started munching on the crispy rice (Guoba) before the sauce arrived. A waiter rushed over, slightly panicked, to stop us and explained that the rich chicken-and-pork gravy needed to be poured over the rice while it was still sizzling hot. Slightly embarrassing, but a fun memory nonetheless!

Another dish that surprised us was something that looked like a sweet green bean kueh. We assumed it was a dessert, but biting into it revealed a savoury pork filling—it was actually a dim sum dish in disguise. An unexpected twist that made it all the more memorable.

But the standout for me was the fried chicken dish topped with aromatic fritters and a generous amount of chilli flakes. Think 辣子鸡, but elevated—spicy, crispy, and packed with flavour. Hands down, the best version I have had!

All in all, 诸葛酿 offers great food, a vibrant atmosphere, and reasonable prices. Whether you're a fan of Sichuan cuisine or just curious to explore, this is a spot you shouldn’t miss when visiting Chengdu.

The following day, we set off to visit the famous Dujiangyan Irrigation System, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its breathtaking scenery and rich history. The area is dotted with charming landmarks—a towering pagoda, serene temples, and a picturesque old town that feels like stepping back in time.

What makes this place so special are the two elegant bridges linking the old town, creating a postcard-perfect scene. Wandering through the narrow streets, we found lively stalls selling delicious street food, along with cozy little shops offering freshly brewed tea and coffee—perfect for a leisurely break.

The journey from Chengdu took about 80 minutes, and we arrived just in time for a late lunch. The weather was lovely—warm with a gentle breeze—making it ideal for exploring. We couldn’t resist trying some local snacks, especially the crispy potato pancakes—golden and crunchy on the outside, soft and flavourful on the inside, stuffed with fillings of your choice. An absolute must-try!

After filling up on tasty bites, we decided to tackle the pagoda climb for a bird’s-eye view of the ancient irrigation system. The entrance fee was 80 RMB per person, and while the ascent was no easy feat (think steep stairs and plenty of them!), we took our time, pausing at the resting spots to catch our breath. And let me tell you—the view from the top was worth every step! The sprawling landscape of waterways and lush greenery was simply mesmerising.

We lingered up there for a while, soaking in the panoramic views and snapping plenty of photos before making our way back down. Exhausted but happy, we treated ourselves to a pot of fragrant tea at a quaint little shop near the base, where we sat outside, sipping slowly and watching the world go by.

As evening fell, we stayed until around 8 PM to witness the "Blue Tears"—a magical spectacle where the dam lights up in a shimmering blue glow. The sight was nothing short of enchanting, a perfect way to end our day in this historic wonderland.
😆Pro Tip: When planning your visit, consider booking your flights from Singapore to Chengdu early to snag the best deals. For a convenient stay, look for Chengdu hotels in advance to secure the best rates.
