Things to Do in Chengdu

Visiting Chengdu for the first time feels like stepping into a world that’s both familiar and refreshingly different. I expected the city to be a bustling, high-tech hub, but Chengdu’s pace is more laid-back, with wide streets lined by Sichuan-style teahouses and food stalls. The vibrant food scene—full of bold, spicy flavours—immediately stood out.

Chengdu weather can be unpredictable, with chilly winters and humid summers, but it’s perfect for outdoor exploration. The best time to visit Chengdu is during spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November).

Chengdu offers great value without compromising on quality. You’ll find fantastic eats at affordable prices, shop in modern malls or traditional markets, and unwind at luxurious spas without breaking the bank. What to do in Chengdu? Let’s dive into the must-try activities!

Xiling Snow Mountain is a renowned national park located in Sichuan Province, not far from Chengdu. It is an ideal destination for those who wish to experience magnificent nature, especially winter activities.

The mountain's name originates from a Tang Dynasty poet's verse describing snow-covered peaks. The park is divided into two main sections: the ski and snow activity area (ski resort), open during winter (December to March), and the scenic viewing and hiking area (accessible via cable car to the snow-capped peak), open year-round.

In winter, the area transforms into a stunning natural ski resort offering various activities such as snow skiing, snowmobiling, and other snow-related fun. During summer and spring, the region becomes a lush green forest, perfect for panoramic cable car rides or hiking to enjoy the fresh air. The park is easily accessible with cable cars available to reach both the activity and scenic areas, making it convenient even for the elderly or children. Xiling Snow Mountain is a year-round destination that should not be missed when visiting Sichuan.

📌 Location: Dayi County, Chengdu, Sichuan, China

⏰ Opening Hours: Generally 09:00 - 18:00 (hours may vary depending on the season and weather conditions)

🚗 Parking: Parking is available near the park entrance (fees apply).

May is here to review a self-guided 1-day trip to Xiling Snow Mountain by high-speed train and then bus.

📅 January 1, 2025

This trip, as a prelude, was originally planned for a relaxing Chengdu trip, walking around and taking photos. However, Xiling couldn't resist the beauty of the mountain, so we went without a plan (though we had done some research). We chose to travel by high-speed train and then by bus.

📍High-speed train booking and transportation
- We booked through Trip the morning of our trip. We typed "Chengdu to Dayi." There are a lot of train schedules, but... be careful about where you board from Chengdu. What's the connection?

- Chengdu's high-speed rail network has four main stops: North, South, West, and East. However, the train to Dayi, as seen on the Trip app, only has three stations: South (Chengdunan), East (Chengdudong), and West (Chengduxi). All three stations can be reached by metro (search for a Chengdu Metro Map on Google for easy navigation). Or download the MetroMan app.
- We chose to board from South (Chengdunan) because it was convenient and close to our accommodation on Chunxi Road. We took Metro Line 3 and transferred to Metro Line 1 at Sichuan Gym Station. Once on Line 1, we rode two more stops to South Railway Station. We found Exit F, which connects us to the South Railway Station building (so you don't have to worry about getting lost). There are signs along the way.
- Upon arriving at the South Railway Station building, scan your passport (either the far left or the far right) and check your baggage.
- Check in the Trip app to see which gate you're boarding. If it's Gate 1, it's on the same floor as the baggage check-in. If it's Gate 2, 3, or 4, go up to the second floor.
- Line up, scan your passport again (either the far left or the far right), and then go down to wait according to your train number.
- I chose to take the high-speed train from South Station (Chengdunan) because it takes about 20 minutes to get to Dayi. Standing time is easy.

📍At Dayi Station, take the bus to Xiling Snow Mountain.
- Once you get off the high-speed train, look for the escalator exit sign. You'll see a blue panda skiing sign along the way. Follow the signs. My sister will take us to the bus.
- Bus times from Dayi Station to Xiling Snow Mountain: 7:20, 8:55, 9:25, 11:10, 12:30, 13:35, 14:40, 15:35
- When the bus arrives, open Alipay and wait. Go up to the right, near the driver's barrier. There will be a QR code for each person to pay 18 yuan. (The bus is similar to our buses in Thailand. If it's late and crowded, you have to stand the entire time.) The trip takes approximately 1.20-1.40 hours, depending on how often it stops to pick up passengers.

📍Returning to Chengdu
- Get off the bus at Xiling Snow Mountain and return to that stop.
- Return bus times from Xiling Snow Mountain to Dayi Station are 9:20, 10:55, 11:25, 13:10, 14:30, 15:35, 16:40, and 17:40.
- It's a good idea to book your high-speed train return time to avoid missing the bus. It runs until 2-3 PM. (The last bus is also the high-speed train back to Chengdu.)
- Return trip: The same as the inbound trip.

Pros: Traveling by high-speed train and bus: There are many departures throughout the day, so you don't have to worry about running out of buses. And, in my opinion, it's faster than taking the bus from Chengdu (20 minutes + 1.5 hours).

Cons: Traveling by high-speed train and bus: You have to transfer once. Bus seats are not reserved. First come, first served.

If you have a layover in Chengdu, make sure to book a longer one and confidently explore the city!

In October this year, we had a layover in China, specifically in Chengdu. Our layover was 33 hours—here’s a ready-made itinerary for you ⬇️

We flew with Sichuan Airlines. Although they provide a free transit hotel with breakfast, we decided to book a hotel ourselves. 👉 This is because the free hotels are located near the airport, which is quite far from the city. It ends up being very time-consuming, and the savings aren’t worth it. You can find reasonably priced hotels in Chengdu. We chose the HanTing Hotel (Chengdu Tianfu Square Subway Station).

Tip: If your flight the next day is in the evening, you don’t necessarily need to book a room for two nights. You can always leave small luggage or bulky carry-ons at the hotel reception and head out to explore the city. I also highly recommend using the luggage storage service at the airport.

Day 1
The itinerary for the first day was planned considering that we arrived in the late afternoon. If you arrive at a similar time, keep in mind that you’ll only be able to see the city lights until 10:00–11:00 PM (depending on the season and location).

Itinerary:

1. People’s Park — one of the most popular spots for relaxation, free to visit. You can try Sichuan tea served from a long-spouted teapot and watch Sichuan kung fu. While sipping tea, you can also experience another local tradition—ear cleaning (I didn’t dare to try it). There’s also a pond where you can go boating. I recommend checking out the "matchmaking corner"—a kind of local Tinder. It’s one of the most authentic features of People’s Park, where parents post profiles of their adult children.
2. Kuanzhai Alley — a historic district in the center of Chengdu, where buildings from the Qing Dynasty have been preserved (I don’t know much about it, but thought I’d mention it). In short, it’s a street with shops and stalls where you can have dinner and buy souvenirs. You definitely won’t leave empty-handed: for instance, I bought perfume from a local brand. I recommend visiting this street to enjoy the night lights and shopping.
3. Jinli Ancient Street — another historical attraction in the center of Chengdu, also from the Qing Dynasty but with a different vibe. The streets are adorned with red lanterns, adding to the authenticity of the place. I recommend strolling through the narrow alleys and listening to street musicians.

Have you been to Chengdu? Share your impressions! 🐼
😆Pro Tip: When planning your visit, consider booking your flights from Singapore to Chengdu early to snag the best deals. For a convenient stay, look for Chengdu hotels in advance to secure the best rates.

🎭3. Experience Sichuan Opera and the Mystical Face-Changing Performance

Face-Changing Performance

I had heard so much about Sichuan Opera, but nothing prepared me for the jaw-dropping moment when the performer executed the famous face-changing act. The atmosphere in the small theater was intimate, with the smell of incense in the air and the sound of traditional instruments setting the stage.

As the performer danced gracefully, I could hardly believe my eyes when, in the blink of an eye, his face changed—seamlessly—from one mask to another, each more vibrant than the last.

The rapid transformations left me in awe, almost as if magic was at play. The costumes were elaborate, and the vivid colors almost made the air shimmer. This ancient art form felt like a secret kept from the masses, a true gem tucked away from the usual tourist trail.

As I entered a cozy teahouse, I was greeted by a traditional tea ceremony, where the delicate process of pouring tea felt like an art form in itself. The atmosphere was peaceful and meditative, and I couldn’t help but relax, sipping on fragrant jasmine tea while the world outside buzzed on.

🍲9. Dive into Sichuan Hot Pot

Sichuan Hot Pot

The moment I dipped my chopsticks into the bubbling pot of Sichuan hot pot, the air was thick with the scent of spicy broth and aromatic spices.

As I scooped up thin slices of beef, mushrooms, and tofu, they quickly soaked up the rich, flavorful broth, infused with Sichuan peppercorns and dried chilies. The heat from the spices hit me immediately, but then a tingling sensation spread through my mouth, making every bite both fiery and refreshing.

The table around me was lively, with friends laughing, sharing food, and enjoying the communal experience of cooking together. It was unlike any other meal I’d had before—comforting, intense, and unforgettable.
