This is the third time my family and I have visited Datong. The first two times we stayed in hotels, but this time we wanted to try a guesthouse. After checking reviews on Dazhong Dianping, we chose Bo.Yuan Guesthouse (Huayan Temple Branch) because of the traveler comments and its 4.9 high rating. The experience was excellent, so I wanted to share my review.
The day before our trip, the guesthouse manager proactively called us to discuss our itinerary in Datong and our mode of transportation. She also offered a pick-up service, so we provided our travel details. Before we arrived at Datong South Station, a lady called to confirm the pick-up time and location, and informed us of her arrival time. When we got to the waiting area, we waited for about two minutes. The guesthouse lady called again, repeatedly apologizing for being two minutes late. She reconfirmed our waiting spot and described what she was wearing so we wouldn't miss her. When we met her, she didn't look like a typical pick-up driver, but rather a very elegant and young lady. She greeted my family and me warmly, saying, ”I'm so sorry for being two minutes late. The hotel is quite busy today, and the regular pick-up driver couldn't make it. After they told me, I rushed over to pick you up myself. Our hotel values integrity, and since we promised a pick-up service, even if there was no available car, I couldn't use a ride-hailing app. So, I truly apologize for being a few minutes late.” From this conversation, we learned that she was the female owner of the guesthouse. Throughout the journey, she was very talkative and friendly, making us feel completely at ease. She introduced us to the guesthouse and the unique features of Datong, and soon we arrived at the guesthouse. We chatted a lot with her during the short half-hour drive—perhaps it was fate.
**1. Guesthouse Environment and Service:**
Upon arriving at the guesthouse courtyard, we found it to be a very distinctive Siheyuan (quadrangle courtyard). The staff were all very enthusiastic, proactively helping us with our luggage and offering us tea. Since we arrived before check-in time, our room was still being cleaned. To minimize our waiting time, the owner personally urged the cleaning staff to finish quickly. She also used the waiting time to introduce us to the guesthouse's room features and restaurant. Once the room was ready, our room was on the second floor. The staff proactively helped us take our luggage up and turned on the air conditioning. Inside the room, it felt wonderful. Although the room retained the ancient charm of a Siheyuan, the infrastructure was very modern and high-tech, featuring central air conditioning, button-controlled panels, a projector instead of a TV, and an electric toilet. The hotel amenities also catered thoughtfully to modern women, such as essential oils in the toiletries, and provided toilet seat covers, disinfectant wipes, and wet wipes. Additionally, the welcome fruit quality was excellent; the owner mentioned she personally selected and purchased everything herself. The room was very quiet. I usually have trouble sleeping, but this time, I didn't experience insomnia due to changing locations. Instead, I slept exceptionally well because of the tranquil courtyard.
**2. Guesthouse Breakfast:**
From the room to the restaurant, every staff member we encountered greeted us warmly. In the restaurant, the staff proactively introduced the breakfast options and asked if we needed any help. The breakfast selection was very rich, combining Western and Chinese dishes to satisfy every guest's palate. There was vegetable salad, fruit platters, coffee, milk, yogurt, sausages, grilled chicken wings, stir-fried baby cabbage, bread, sweet potatoes, corn, purple rice paste, knife-cut noodles, wontons, and dumplings. The ingredients for these dishes were all personally selected and purchased by the owner, ensuring their freshness. All dishes were freshly prepared by the chef and tasted excellent. Although the restaurant might not be as large or offer as many varieties as four or five-star hotels, the quality of ingredients and taste were certainly on par with their culinary standards.
Escaping the hustle and bustle of the big city for a weekend in Datong, our short two-day trip is coming to an end. The cultural heritage of Datong, its unique cuisine, and our stay at Bo.Yuan Guesthouse have all left a wonderful impression on me. Next time I visit Datong, I will definitely choose Bo.Yuan Guesthouse again. I wish the owner great success in her business! See you next time, Datong!

Elena ProkipchinOne of the best hotels we’ve ever stayed at in China!
We honestly didn’t expect to be this impressed. From the moment we arrived, everything was absolutely perfect.
The hotel itself is incredibly beautiful and atmospheric. Every corner is thoughtfully designed, making it feel like you’re staying in a boutique museum rather than a hotel. The entire property is incredibly aesthetic, and every part of it is a perfect spot for beautiful photos.
We stayed in a stunning two-level room, which completely exceeded our expectations. It was spacious, stylish, exceptionally comfortable, and spotlessly clean. Every little detail had been carefully considered.
The location couldn’t be better—right in the heart of Datong Ancient Town. We could walk everywhere, with all the main attractions, restaurants, and beautiful streets just a few minutes away.
The staff were some of the friendliest we’ve ever met. Everyone was genuinely welcoming, kind, and always happy to help, making us feel at home from the very first moment.
Breakfast was also excellent. Instead of a buffet, a freshly prepared traditional Chinese breakfast was served each morning. It was delicious, beautifully presented, and the perfect start to the day.
One of the nicest surprises was that guests can borrow traditional Chinese costumes free of charge for a photo shoot around the hotel. Unfortunately, we didn’t have enough free time to try it ourselves, but it’s such a wonderful idea and gives us another reason to come back.
We travel a lot and have stayed in countless hotels around the world, so it’s actually very difficult to surprise us. But this hotel genuinely did.
If it were possible to give 100 stars instead of 5, we absolutely would. Even if we really wanted to find something to complain about, we honestly couldn’t. Everything was simply perfect.
Without any doubt, this is one of the best hotel experiences we’ve ever had. If we ever return to Datong, we won’t even consider staying anywhere else. We will definitely come back.
Highly, highly recommended!

A very cozy and comfortable B&B, located right in the ancient town's pedestrian street, offering a peaceful retreat amidst the bustling area. The courtyard is spacious, the rooms are clean, and all amenities are of high quality. Breakfast is plentiful, and the staff are friendly. The location is excellent, with all of the ancient town's attractions within walking distance, which is great when traveling with kids as it saves a lot of hassle. Plus, many popular restaurants often have long queues, but because this place is so close, you can easily grab takeout and enjoy your meal back at the hotel, saving a lot of waiting time. I'll definitely stay here again next time I visit Datong.

We had such a lovely stay in Datong! The hospitality here truly exceeded our expectations. The host was incredibly friendly, caring, and always ready to help with anything we needed. They even offered to do our laundry while we were out sightseeing, and folded everything neatly after it dried — such thoughtful service.
They also helped us order food and gave great recommendations, which made our trip so much easier. The room itself was surprisingly high tech, with a fun sound control system that made the stay even more enjoyable.
Although the room is on Level 2 with no lift, the host kindly carried our luggage up during check in and brought it down again when we checked out. Their helpfulness really made a difference.
Breakfast was lovely — nutritious, tasty, and just the right kind of start before heading out to explore.
Overall, we felt very welcomed and well taken care of. Highly recommended for anyone visiting Datong.

The room was fantastic, very clean and tidy. It had two large floor-to-ceiling windows offering views of the ancient city walls from different angles. The location was excellent, not far from the old city. They provided welcome fruits and a mini-bar, which was a very thoughtful touch. The service was impeccable; they even gave us an extra breakfast. The breakfast spread was varied and the staff were very friendly and proactive with recommendations. I would definitely stay here again! 👍

WobuheiThe hotel has a very artistic and modern style, and the rooms are comfortable with a well-designed layout. It features smart home technology throughout, and the bathroom has a wet/dry separation. They even offer complimentary cocktails and in-room drinks. Being newly opened, all the facilities are brand new. The staff were very enthusiastic and upgraded my room, giving me more space. Any requests I had were promptly addressed. The breakfast was quite comprehensive and had everything you'd expect. I would definitely choose this hotel again.

QingzhebabaThe hotel's location is superb; it's the perfect choice for exploring the old city, with all the sights and great food nearby. The hotel is very clean, the restaurant food is delicious, and the staff provide excellent service. As I was traveling alone and wanted to try local specialties, the staff kindly reduced the portion sizes, which was great – tasty and no waste! The room facilities are new, but there's a minor issue: the sink and shower are in separate areas, and the bath towels are kept under the sink. This makes it inconvenient to grab a towel after showering. If you take it into the shower beforehand, there's nowhere to hang it. Perhaps a hook could be added?

Guest UserThis is my second stay here! It's very close to the ancient city, about a 10-minute taxi ride away, and also about 10 minutes from Datong South Station. The hotel has a high star rating, and the butler service is attentive and warm. The rooms are well-equipped with everything you need. It's truly perfect for families, as it allows for separate resting areas while also providing space to work. A big shoutout to the lamb offal soup with vermicelli at breakfast – it was delicious!

The location of the hotel is perfect. It is the right place to stay when visiting the Hanging Temple and Jin Temple. The room and bed are large, especially suitable for bringing children. It is no problem for a family of three to stay in a big bed. The bathroom is separated into dry and wet areas. The breakfast is also very good. Overall, it is very cost-effective.

Pros:
1. The hotel's location is excellent, right by the city wall. From a room with a view, you can catch a glimpse of the ancient city's rooftops, and the night view is quite good!
2. The housekeeping staff were very responsive and diligent in their work.
3. The disposable linen-cotton slippers were very comfortable.
Cons:
The facilities are really outdated! The sofa and cushions looked… well, not great.
The drain in the shower clogged after I washed my hair, and I even have short hair! I had to clear the drain myself, which would be quite unpleasant for anyone who likes things clean.
While the view outside the window was nice, the exterior glass was covered in stains, clearly not having been cleaned in a long time.
However, the room rate wasn't high, and the pickup point for day tours was nearby, so I won't be too picky.
