I've been to Datong twice, and this time I stayed in a guesthouse in the ancient city, which was a truly different experience. First off, the service was impeccable, far superior to any star-rated hotel. From booking to check-in and check-out, the staff's service-oriented mindset was excellent and incredibly thoughtful. Next, the decor: it's anything but the cookie-cutter style you find in hotels. From the lobby to the rooms, everything is unique and distinctive, I'd say it's an Italian style. The bedding and amenities in the room are all branded, and there's plenty of hot water. Breakfast is a nine-grid affair, and the sliced noodles were delicious. The coffee at the front desk was also good. They even offer free try-ons for travel photography outfits. Overall, the experience was fantastic and really changed my perception of guesthouses. I'll definitely come back to experience it again if I get the chance!

On this trip, after leaving my job, I've stayed in many places, but Datong was the most surprising city. It's full of historical sites, delicious food, and a vibrant, down-to-earth atmosphere. But what surprised me even more was the guesthouse I chose. I did extensive research and ultimately decided to stay within the ancient city, which turned out to be incredibly convenient for dining, lodging, and getting around. It was fantastic and perfectly suited me.
Initially, I considered guesthouses in the Southeast District, but they were all new, and their styles were quite similar and unremarkable, much like guesthouses in other cities. So, I picked one with unique traditional Chinese characteristics, and it completely exceeded my expectations. The breakfast was exactly to my liking – nutritious and light. The room was warm and cozy, and the toiletry kit was amazing, with thoughtful items inside. Even though it's been in the ancient city for ten years, the decor and renovation show no sign of age; it's incredibly well-maintained. The housekeeper mentioned they had just upgraded all the rooms before my arrival, haha! 😄
This guesthouse truly helped my restless mind calm down. It felt like staying in a museum. The aunties and housekeepers working here told me stories about every single object and corner, which deeply moved me. This is what a guesthouse should be – unpretentious and full of stories. The biggest surprise this time was having the chance to meet the owner, a wonderful lady. She was so nice, I initially thought she was just another staff member; she had absolutely no airs. More importantly, her experiences and background are incredible – she does extreme sports and has even climbed Mount Everest! Talking with her made me feel so comfortable and helped me let go of a lot of things. Thank you for the encounter; it was truly destiny. This was the most unexpected gain from my trip to Datong, and I will definitely go back if I get the chance! It felt just like home, with no sense of unfamiliarity whatsoever.

Julie 7504Datong isn't a city you visit only once, and Yi Yan isn't a guesthouse you stay in just once. I absolutely loved the Japanese-style decor; it really shows the owner's taste. I heard they're developing a new guesthouse that's even better in terms of size and design than the current one. I'll definitely check it out next time I'm in Datong.

Guest UserA small inn inside a new development within the old city, within a few minutes walk of the city wall, where you can climb up and walk the wall. The hotel and surrounding development was created in the traditional style. Clean, newly built , managed well, provided a good breakfast, room furnishings were a higher quality than an average hotel. Underground parking garage was convenient. If I had to improve anything, I would find a way to turn off the bath area sink mirror night light. It was distracting to try to sleep with the room bathed in bright blue light ( more like a studio, not a fully separate bathroom )... I ended up sticking a towel against it to block most of the light.

Guest UserMy biggest surprise on this trip to Datong was definitely this hotel. As a hotel enthusiast, I really couldn't find much to fault (though the pool water wasn't quite warm enough – a minor imperfection, I suppose).
First off, the location is superb, right by the ancient city wall. You step out and the city wall is right across the street, and Southeast Yip is just next door. Taking a stroll in the evening couldn't be more convenient! Everything is close by, and getting a taxi is easy.
Secondly, the hotel itself is stunning and impeccably clean, perfect for photos. The hotel feels like a work of art, beautifully designed, blending classical aesthetics with modern design. It also does an excellent job of protecting guest privacy; outside photographers can't just wander in. It's incredibly tranquil; even though it's fully booked every day, you rarely run into other guests, offering great privacy. I slept wonderfully.
Then there are the top-tier amenities. All the luxuries you'd expect from a high-end hotel are here. Everything in the minibar, except for the red wine, is complimentary – there's so much you can't possibly drink it all. Every day, they offer different fresh fruits, nuts, and a goodnight dessert, plus complimentary coffee. The complimentary afternoon tea is very generous and aesthetically pleasing. The breakfast selection is extensive and delicious!
And the service, it's simply outstanding, scoring almost full marks for attention to detail. There are plenty of staff members, and they respond incredibly quickly. They even deliver takeout to your room.
If I had to pick a flaw, it's that it's quite expensive. But overall, it was definitely worth it. If I come to Datong again, I'd choose this hotel without hesitation.

This hotel is located right next to the Huayan Temple in Datong Ancient City, making it super convenient for sightseeing. The hotel's food is authentic and varied, and the service is excellent. They even deliver meals to your room, which is incredibly thoughtful. The hotel also has a great selection of entertainment facilities, including KTV, a mahjong/card room, and a home theater, so you'll never be bored. What's even more considerate is that they provide hair oil in the rooms, which is a lovely touch for women's hair care – full of thoughtful details!

Guest UserThe hotel facilities are quite old, but its location is a big plus. I wasn't a fan of the large vanity mirror facing the double bed, and the air conditioning display stayed lit up all night. The power outlets also seemed a bit dated.
It was clean, but there's a construction site downstairs. Luckily it rained, so there wasn't much dust, but it was quite noisy in the mornings.
The overall environment is pretty average, which is to be expected for an older hotel. The breakfast selection was limited and the taste was just okay, though the knife-cut noodles were decent.
I really need to vent about the restaurant. They advertised a separate entrance for hotel guests, but when I went down for dinner, it was packed. The staff managing the queue kept giving conflicting information, and the whole system was incredibly disorganized. Eventually, they told us to wait for half an hour across the street with non-guests until the central corridor restaurant opened. When I went back to the hotel lobby to ask what was going on, a front desk attendant had a security guard escort me up to a table in the Chinese restaurant, where I had to share a table. The food wasn't great either – very salty.
Lots of complaints, so I'd advise caution.

Anonymous UserFive-star review! First off, the room was spotless, with clean and fresh bedding and bathroom facilities, making for a very comfortable stay. The owner and staff were incredibly friendly and welcoming, genuinely helpful with any issues, providing an excellent service experience.
The location is quite easy to find, behind Daiwangfu, and while it's a bit of a distance from the ancient city's core, taxis are readily available. Friends who enjoy peace and quiet will love it here, as you won't be disturbed by the crowds and noise of the scenic area.
Just a quick note on breakfast: there wasn't a huge variety, and it paled in comparison to more extensive hotel buffets. However, it was perfectly fine for a simple meal to start the day. Aside from this minor breakfast drawback, the guesthouse's facilities, service, and ambiance were outstanding, offering great value for money. I highly recommend it to anyone visiting the area.

Extremely happy with my stay here!
Room is very spacious and clean, and I was within walking distance to most of the attractions and restaurants.
The staff here are very friendly and they always went out of their way to make my experience in Datong memorable! I'm especially grateful because the manager showed me how to order food from local restaurants using my phone and get it delivered straight to my room!
10/10!!

The hotel has very spacious and comfortable rooms. The breakfast is only Chinese, but rich and plentiful. We can't comment on the location because we always took taxis to the attractions around Datong (the wooden pagoda, hanging monasteries, and the Yungang Grottoes), but right next to the hotel are plenty of restaurants and places to grab a quick bite. The staff seemed helpful, but no one spoke English, so we had to use a translation app, which wasn't always accurate, and communication was somewhat hampered.
