How Early Can I Check In for My Flight?

By Laika ac - Ashgabat Airport
The exact timing for when you can check in varies slightly by airline and whether you are checking in online or at the airport. Here’s the most current information:
Online Check-In
- Online Opening Times: Most airlines allow you to check in online starting 24 hours before your flight. This is consistent across major carriers like Delta, American Airlines, and Alaska Airlines. Some airlines, such as Southwest, open online check-in 36 hours before departure for those who purchase their EarlyBird Check-In service. Most airlines open online check-in 24 to 48 hours before the scheduled departure time. Airlines like Singapore Airlines and Cathay Pacific typically allow online check-in 48 hours before departure.
- Cut-off Times: Online check-in usually closes 1 to 2 hours before departure. For example, Delta and American Airlines typically close online check-in 1 hour before domestic flights and 1.5 hours before international flights. It’s crucial to check in as soon as possible after the window opens, especially for airlines like Southwest, where boarding order is assigned based on check-in time.
Airport Check-In
- Counter Opening Times: For most international flights, airport check-in counters open about 3 hours before departure. Domestic flights typically see counters open 2 hours prior.
- Cut-off Times: The cut-off for checking in at the airport is usually 45 minutes to 1 hour before domestic flights and 1.5 to 2 hours before international flights. For example, Delta requires check-in at least 30 minutes before domestic flights and 60 minutes before international flights
Should I Check In Online or at the Airport?

By Upsontedmuilo
Whenever possible, opt for online check-in to save time and reduce stress on travel day.
However, if you have specific needs that require airport assistance, plan to arrive early to complete the check-in process smoothly.
Online Check-In
- Advantages: It’s quicker, allows you to secure your preferred seat early, and you can often avoid long queues at the airport. Online check-in also lets you print your boarding pass at home or use a mobile boarding pass.
- Best For: Travelers who prefer convenience and want to minimize time spent at the airport.
Airport Check-In
- Advantages: Essential if you need special assistance, are traveling with oversized luggage, or if online check-in isn’t available (e.g., due to visa requirements).
- Best For: Travelers with complicated itineraries or those who require in-person help with their booking.
