"The hotel staff were incredibly friendly and helpful. Its location is excellent, right across from Kyoto Station, making transportation very convenient. There are also many great dining options nearby. The only minor drawback was that they don't provide bottled water; you have to use a large cup provided to get water from the dispenser on your floor."

"The Gate Hotel, converted from a former school, is incredibly clean and beautiful. On the ground floor, you'll find a Blue Bottle Coffee, Japanese restaurant, and a bookstore, plus a lovely lawn where many people relax and socialize. Despite being located in Kyoto's liveliest area, the hotel is surrounded by a stream, creating a beautiful sense of serene isolation from the hustle and bustle. The pure white walls, set against lush greenery, are simply picturesque. The hotel offers great value for money, and the handsome foreign gentleman at the ground floor reception and the attentive ladies at the front desk provided an exceptional experience overall."

"Great hotel room, spacious and comfortable . Beds were soft and the toilet was big with two separate places to shower , sink and the toilet itself . Remember to close the window of the bathtub otherwise people can see you taking a shower (even it is far distance).  The onsen was great with sauna, cold onsen, outdoor natural hot springs and indoor.  The negative point is that every floor they have smoking área and the smell of cigarette was in my room every night . We had to turn on the a/c and the air purifier and in the next day ask staff to keep the windows opened for ventilation . The location is privileged just ten minutes walking from the train station.   There are supermarkets nearby and it is quite convenient to eat around , with meals of all ranges of prices ."

With a stay at The Royal Park Hotel Kyoto Umekoji in Kyoto (Shimogyo Ward), you'll be within a 5-minute drive of Kyoto Tower and Shijo Street. This hotel is 1.5 mi (2.4 km) from Kawaramachi Street and 2.2 mi (3.6 km) from Nishiki Market. Complimentary wireless internet access keeps you connected, and cable programming is available for your entertainment. Private bathrooms have complimentary toiletries and bidets. Conveniences include phones, as well as safes and electric kettles.

"Out of all the hotels I stayed at during this trip to Japan, the The Royal Park Hotel Kyoto Umekoji, considering its location, room, breakfast, ambiance, and price, is definitely the best value for money in my opinion. First off, the location is truly excellent. The hotel is right next to Umekoji-Kyotonishi Station, just one stop from Kyoto Station on the JR line. When you're dragging luggage, this “almost right at the hotel once you get off the train” location is incredibly convenient. Even though it's not directly in Kyoto Station, I never felt the transportation was inconvenient; in fact, it was nicer to be away from the hustle and bustle of the station area. The hotel itself is located within the Umekoji Park area, and the surroundings are very pleasant. The Kyoto Railway Museum is right next door, and the Kyoto Aquarium isn't far, making it particularly suitable if you're traveling with kids. And here's a very interesting feature – trains. Many rooms directly face the railway, allowing you to watch various trains come and go from your window while lying in bed. For railway enthusiasts, this might be far more exciting than a regular city view room. Exploring temples in Kyoto during the day and then returning to your room at night to watch trains entering and leaving Kyoto Station is quite a unique experience offered by this hotel. The room itself was also quite satisfying. Hotel rooms in Japanese cities are generally on the smaller side, but the rooms here are comparatively spacious for a hotel of similar price in Japan. You can open your suitcase without feeling too cramped, and the bathroom is also generously sized, giving you plenty of space to shower comfortably. At first glance, the breakfast area didn't seem large, but after actually eating there, I found the layout to be very efficient. The counter space is utilized very well, and there's a wider variety of food than expected. The breakfast certainly doesn't feel skimpy just because the dining area isn't huge. For those who need a hearty meal before a day of sightseeing, it's perfectly adequate. There's also a small detail in the lobby that left a lasting impression on me: They actually have a 'Densha de GO!' train driving simulator! You can hop on and drive a train or two while checking in or waiting for others, which is especially great for families with kids, as it keeps them entertained during waits. Combined with the nearby Kyoto Railway Museum and the constantly passing trains outside the rooms, this hotel truly seems to have mastered the “railway element.” Additionally, there's a FamilyMart convenience store on the first floor of the hotel. Whether you need to buy drinks or snacks at night, or grab a few last-minute items in the morning, you don't have to go far. After traveling for over ten days, you realize that seemingly insignificant amenities like this are actually incredibly practical. If I had to find a flaw, I'd say its biggest “problem” is that it's easily underestimated. When you first look at the map, Umekoji-Kyotonishi might not seem like the most central location in Kyoto; but once you actually stay there, you realize Kyoto Station is just one stop away, the JR line is right at your doorstep, and the park, railway museum, and aquarium are all nearby. Plus, the rooms are more spacious than many hotels in central Kyoto. Paying a little less for a “prime location” premium actually results in a more comfortable stay. That's why, among all the hotels we stayed at during this Japan trip, I would rate this one as: The best value for money. If I come back to Kyoto in the future and the price is right, I would very likely stay here again. I especially recommend it for families with children, railway enthusiasts, and anyone planning to use the JR line for travel around Kyoto."

"Our stay at this hotel in Japan was absolutely exceptional. From the moment we arrived, the staff greeted us with incredible warmth and flawless hospitality, perfectly embodying the spirit of omotenashi (mindful hospitality). The room was spotlessly clean, beautifully blending modern comfort with elegant Japanese design touches. We especially loved the attention to detail, from the high-quality amenities to the peaceful atmosphere that offered a perfect retreat after a long day of exploring. The location was also incredibly convenient, making transit a breeze. We couldn't have asked for a better home base and will definitely stay here again!"

A stay at Hotel Keihan Kyotoeki Minami places you in the heart of Kyoto, within a 5-minute drive of Kyoto Tower and Tofuku-ji Temple. This hotel is 2.2 mi (3.6 km) from Nishiki Market and 2.2 mi (3.6 km) from Nijō Castle. Make use of convenient amenities, which include complimentary wireless internet access and a vending machine. Complimentary wireless internet access is available to keep you connected. Private bathrooms with shower/tub combinations feature complimentary toiletries and bidets. Conveniences include phones, as well as safes and electric kettles.

"The room's cleanliness was, as always, excellent, and it was quite spacious. We booked a twin room, and the beds could be pushed together. However, the bathroom was exceptionally small, making it difficult to place toiletries, including cups and razors, freely. There's a self-service laundry room and an ice machine. The room only provides two bottles of water, and there's no water purifier. Although the bathroom sign indicates the water is drinkable, it actually has a strong chlorine smell, which persists even after boiling. This isn't very practical for those accustomed to bottled mineral water or water purifiers in their home country. All toiletries were provided, but I have two main complaints: the toothpaste came in a tiny 2x1 cm paper sachet, which was incredibly inconvenient – small, hard to tear open, and difficult to squeeze out. It was quite an experience! Secondly, unlike the first hotel we stayed at, there were no bath salts provided. Transportation is extremely convenient, with Kyoto Station directly across the street. Check-in was also easy, and our luggage was automatically stored by the front desk upon arrival."

"An excellent onsen hotel, I'd definitely come back if I have the chance. The room offers views of Kyoto Tower, and Kyoto Station is within walking distance. You have to take off your shoes upon entering the hotel. The room provides socks and a yukata in a basket. In the hot spring area, you can shower right at the entrance. I booked a king-sized bed room, but when I arrived at the hotel, I was told only twin rooms were available. After some discussion, they changed it to a twin room. The mini-fridge snacks in the room were all complimentary. You can also enjoy the hot springs for free in the evening, though I didn't get around to trying it. About 80% of the guests were Westerners, and the housekeeping staff were all from Southeast Asia. The hotel staff's attitude was excellent, which I really appreciated, but I noticed their attitude was even better towards Western guests... Most people walking around seemed to be Western tourists. The hotel isn't too far from nearby attractions; walking to Shijo and Kiyomizu-dera Temple is quite manageable. If you have the means, you could hire a car to visit other attractions, but it's not very friendly for those with luggage, as the sidewalks are incredibly narrow and you have to dodge both cars and people.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ I had a wonderful stay at Tokyu Stay Kyoto Sanjo-Karasuma. The location is excellent—situated in a quiet and pleasant Kyoto neighborhood while being just a short walk from Karasuma Oike Station, making it easy to get around the city. There are also plenty of cafés, restaurants, convenience stores, and shopping areas nearby. The staff were exceptionally friendly, welcoming, and always happy to help. Check-in and check-out were smooth, and the service throughout my stay was excellent. The room was clean, comfortable, and thoughtfully equipped. Having a washer-dryer and microwave in the room was especially convenient for a longer stay. Despite the central location, the hotel was peaceful at night, allowing for a good night’s sleep. Overall, Tokyu Stay Kyoto Sanjo-Karasuma was the perfect base for exploring Kyoto. I would definitely stay here again and highly recommend it to anyone visiting the city.

This hotel has a great vibe and is overall very comfortable, but it's a bit far from the metro and bus station. It's not very convenient if you have heavy luggage, as it would be a struggle to pull it all the way. I later found out the hotel offers a pick-up service from Kyoto Station, which would have made things much easier! 👍

When we chose this hotel, we saw pictures and videos that made us think it was a resort estate, but it's not. There's very little to see inside the hotel; I could walk through the entire property in 5 minutes. Secondly, the hotel advertises natural hot springs, but the public ones reek of disinfectant as soon as you walk in, which is very unpleasant. The room itself was okay and had character, and the bathtub was very large with a pleasant woody scent when bathing. Finally, the breakfast – honestly, the taste was just mediocre. I wouldn't choose this hotel again at the same price point.

The Urban Hotel is really good. There's one on Shijo and one on Gojo, and I've stayed at both. They're excellent. When I come to Kyoto, I usually choose this brand. They are very clean, and both locations have a large public bath, which I really love.

I stayed here in a double room and overall had a pretty good experience. The room was clean and comfortable, and both the air conditioning and heater worked very well. One thing that really stood out was the bathroom — the bathtub was much larger than what you usually get in Japan. I’m a tall person, and I could actually sit down and lie back comfortably, which is rare. Most hotel baths feel very small, but this one felt closer to around 1.4m in length, which made having a bath genuinely enjoyable. The bed was comfortable, and housekeeping did a great job — the bed was made every day with fresh sheets. Wi-Fi was also very fast, which was a big plus. Amenities were decent, and you can pick up extra items if you need them. Check-in is a bit late at 3pm, which I didn’t love, but that’s balanced out by an 11am checkout. Having that extra time in the morning made it feel worth it overall. I did have a couple of negatives. The strangest one was finding an old sock behind the TV when I arrived. It was very obvious and not hidden, so I’m not sure how it was missed during cleaning. It was a bit gross, but I just left it. Another downside was the mini fridge — it’s more like a cooler than a real fridge. It keeps drinks from getting warm, but they don’t get properly cold. In summer, this really wouldn’t be good enough. Replacing it with a proper mini fridge would be a big upgrade. The other major issue was the lift. It is painfully slow, and there’s only one lift for the upper floors. On checkout day, I left my room about 10 minutes before checkout time, and I almost didn’t make it downstairs in time because of how slow it was. That part was honestly pretty ridiculous. Location-wise, this hotel is excellent. It’s very easy to get to from Kyoto Station — just head south and you’re there in about 4–5 minutes. It’s also very convenient when leaving Kyoto by train. A tip for using the subway: instead of going back to Kyoto Station, walk right from the hotel to Shijō Station. It’s on the same subway line, you’ll get on before Kyoto Station, and the train is empty — so you’re almost guaranteed a seat and can ride comfortably to your destinations. For food and shopping, there’s a shopping mall just across the road toward the station with a Don Quijote, McDonald’s, and other options. The hotel is also right next to a Coco Ichibanya curry house, which is fantastic and open late. Overall, despite a few odd issues, this was a solid stay with a great location, good comfort, and very easy access to transport. I’d happily consider staying here again.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Great Value Stay in Kyoto I had a pleasant stay at Kyoto Universal Hotel Karasuma. The location is convenient, with easy access to public transportation, making it simple to explore Kyoto’s major attractions and nearby areas. The room was clean, comfortable, and well-maintained, providing everything needed for a relaxing stay after a day of sightseeing. One of the best features is the excellent value for money, especially considering the facilities and services provided. The staff were friendly and helpful throughout my stay, and the check-in/check-out process was smooth. The complimentary meals were a nice bonus and helped keep travel costs down. Overall, this hotel is a great choice for travelers looking for affordable accommodation in Kyoto without sacrificing comfort and convenience. I would happily stay here again on my next visit to Kyoto.
