How to Use the Octopus Card

Octopus Card By Bus

Here’s a step-by-step guide for Singaporeans on how to use the Octopus Card.

Step 1: Activate Your Card

When you buy your Octopus Card at the airport or MTR station, it is ready to use immediately after topping up. No registration is needed.

Step 2: Tap In for Transport

Place your Octopus Card on the reader at the entrance of MTR gates, buses, ferries, or trams. The reader will beep and the fare will be automatically deducted.

Step 3: Tap Out When Required

For most MTR lines, buses, and ferries, tap your card again when exiting. This ensures the correct fare is calculated.

Step 4: Use It for Shopping and Food

At convenience stores, cafes, fast food outlets, and some attractions, simply tap your card on the payment reader. Wait for the confirmation beep or green light. No cash is needed.

Step 5: Check Your Balance Regularly

You can check your remaining balance at MTR machines, customer service counters, or even at convenience stores. Top up when your balance is low to avoid inconvenience.

Step 6: Top Up When Needed

Add value at any MTR station, Airport Express counter, or convenience store. Payments can be made with cash or card.

Step 7: Refund Before Leaving (Optional)

If you plan to return your Octopus Card, visit an MTR service counter to get your remaining balance and deposit back. A small handling fee may apply if the card was used for less than 90 days.

💡 Pro Tip: Book your hotels in Hong Kong early, especially during weekends or festivals. Prices rise fast, and early bookings on Trip.com often come with extra discounts.

Hong Kong Octopus Card Expiry and Validity: What You Need to Know

Octopus Card Validity

If you’re planning a trip to Hong Kong and wondering whether your Octopus Card from a previous visit still works, here’s what you should know.

Does a Hong Kong Octopus Card expire?

The good news is that most standard Octopus Card cards do not have a fixed expiry date, but there is an important rule around inactivity.

Your stored value remains valid for up to 3 years from your last transaction or top-up. This means if you haven’t used your card for more than three years, the card may become inactive.

What happens if your Octopus Card is inactive?

If your card hasn’t been used for over three years:

  • The card may be deactivated
  • You may not be able to tap in for transport or retail purchases
  • Reactivation may be required before you can use it again

In many cases, you can visit an MTR Corporation customer service centre to check whether your card can be reactivated.

How to check if your card still works

Before your next trip to Hong Kong, you can:

  • Test the card at MTR station readers
  • Visit an MTR customer service counter
  • Check your balance at convenience stores that accept Octopus payments

If your card no longer works, purchasing a new one may be the easiest option.

I really loved the spacious Suite 1665, especially having a small kitchen in the room, which was super convenient. The only thing that bothered me was at checkout. I asked a slightly overweight porter with black-rimmed glasses to help me call a taxi. While we were waiting by the road, he saw a white car approaching. Recognizing the driver, he immediately prioritized helping that guest, leaving us standing there. Later, I went into the lobby to find him and saw him helping the people from the white car with their luggage. I personally saw him put their luggage into the white car and collect a tip from them. This was at 2:48 PM. It seems some people are just driven by tips. I'm not making this up! The hotel should have surveillance footage!

Mira hotel exceeded our expectations of hotels in HK. Room was decent size (not like the small ones many HK hotels apparently tend to have). The bed was huge and comfy. The pool area is really nice and vibrant. Gym is loaded with machines and even free weights. The bathrooms even have a sauna. We also really appreciated the kind hospitality of the concierge and staff who gave us food suggestions and directions to places. Water bottles and steamer was also delivered when asked. We loved that the Mira is located in the heart of TST. Few minutes walk to MTR. Donki is downstairs. Food all around.

The Cordis Hong Kong, a Langham property, truly delivers on quality. My friends and I had an exceptional experience throughout our stay, exceeding all expectations. The room was meticulously cleaned, and the overall ambiance was a sophisticated blend of understated luxury. The hardware facilities were high-end and comprehensive, and the staff were attentive and polite. The popular infinity pool offers fantastic views, and the hotel's location is incredibly convenient for getting around. Our stay was incredibly comfortable. I highly recommend this hotel for anyone visiting Hong Kong!

An absolutely fantastic stay at the Kowloon Shangri-La! The location is superb: the MTR station is just 100 meters from the main entrance, and the Avenue of Stars is right across the street – you can easily reach Victoria Harbour via the pedestrian bridge whenever you like. The room was very clean and quite spacious, never feeling cramped. The bed was incredibly comfortable! We had a harbor-view room with a floor-to-ceiling window, perfect for enjoying the Victoria Harbour night view anytime. The staff were incredibly warm, professional, and attentive; they could sense if you needed help just from your subtle expressions and were always happy to assist. In the evenings, the hotel staff even left little 'inspirational' cards on the bed, truly giving you that 'Hong Kong-style' thoughtful service! If I get the chance to visit HK again, I'll definitely stay at the Kowloon Shangri-La again! PS: The hotel's own brand tea bags are wonderfully fragrant 😋

The hotel floors are just okay, but the room itself was decent, even if a bit old. The service, however, was excellent. I just checked out and had to immediately recommend this place! This hotel is truly a love-hate experience. First, the pros: The pool view is absolutely stunning! The deep blue water paired with wooden screens makes for perfect vacation photos every time. The room was also a pleasant surprise; although you can tell it's a bit older, it's very well-maintained. And I have to praise the service! From the doorman to the cleaning staff, everyone was super nice.

We been staying at this hotel on at least two previous occasions! On the whole, we had not been disappointed! The facilities are good but mostly dated. The cleanliness is generally quite good standards. The staff are very helpful and pleasant; the services are prompt and responsive. The location is unquestionably excellent. It is closed to all public amenities, eateries, department stores and public transport. The tram stops are right in the front of the hotel! We enjoy the great deal for being a “long stay”. Apart from getting a good price, we received a fresh fruit plate, free drinks in the fridge, daily free soup and desert treats and one off free laundry. And the best of all is the free airport shuttle bus dropping us back to the airport!!! Anyway we be sure to go back again!!

Upon check-in, the front desk informed us that the hotel's upper floors were undergoing renovations, and to let them know if we encountered any issues. Our 4-day stay was pretty good. We were on the 15th floor, and when we left around 10 AM, we barely heard any noise from the room. The room itself was decent, spacious enough to fully open two 28-inch suitcases. The hotel's location is also very convenient; you can get here from the airport by taking bus A21/A22 or the MTR. It's about a 10-minute walk from Tsim Sha Tsui MTR station to the hotel. Downstairs, there are plenty of dining options like Lin Heung Tea House, Yung Kee Roast Goose, Chung So Dessert, Wa So Cafe, an egg tart shop, and Haidilao. For shopping, there's Matsumoto Kiyoshi, Don Quijote, 7-11, and Wellcome Supermarket. The street right outside the hotel is Kimberley Road, and our driver told us this area is Hong Kong's 'Korean Street,' so you'll find lots of Korean restaurants around! Alright! #TsimShaTsui #TsimShaTsuiHotel ##GreatValueHotel #TravelBug #YungKeeRoastGoose #LinHeungTeaHouse #WaSoCafe #Hashtag #ChibiMarukoChan – On the first floor of The One shopping mall next to the hotel, there's even a Chibi Maruko-chan birthday celebration event with merchandise for sale!

The location is fantastic, right in the heart of Tsim Sha Tsui, about a 10-minute walk from Victoria Harbour. Downstairs, there are tons of popular Instagrammable restaurants. We went during the May Day holiday, and the queues weren't too bad. Victoria Harbour was super crowded, so we went back to the hotel to rest, and by 9 PM, it was much less busy. It was really convenient with kids; the two single beds were pushed together, which was perfect for a family of three. Just be prepared for the room to be small. The subway entrance, Sunset Rollercoaster, and a Rich Ice Cream shop are all right downstairs.

Anson and the BP Hotel staff colleagues took fantastic care of us during our stay, even with a forgotten passport in the room we were able to get it back quickly and without hassle. Thank you for the great service and hope to be back! The room we were in had an amazing view too (25th floor). Also great to have laundry self service in the building with both washing and drying available.

✅ Pros: A truly great stay 📍 Fantastic Location Walking distance to Tsim Sha Tsui MTR station, making it convenient to get anywhere. The A21 airport bus stop is about a 10-minute walk away. You can easily walk to the Avenue of Stars, K11, and Harbour City – perfect for shopping and enjoying the Victoria Harbour night view. Below the hotel is Wing Kee Roasted Goose, and Hua Sao Cafe and Hung Hom Desserts are also within walking distance, making it super easy to hit up all the famous food spots. 🛏️ Spacious Room & Surprise Upgrade I booked a standard double room and got upgraded to a quad room. For Hong Kong, the space is quite generous. There was plenty of room to open two suitcases without any issues. Disposable slippers, toothpaste, and toothbrushes were provided, saving me the hassle of bringing my own. 👩💼 Warm and Efficient Service The front desk staff were very friendly, and check-in and check-out were quick. Luggage storage was efficient, allowing me to go shopping after checking out without any worries. ❌ Cons: Showering is genuinely inconvenient 🚿 Bathtub Shower Combo The bathroom doesn't have a separate shower stall; it's a bathtub with a showerhead. You have to stand in the tub to shower, which means water easily splashes out, making the floor wet. For anyone not used to showering in a bathtub, it definitely detracts from the experience. If you're traveling with elderly people or those with mobility issues, you should seriously consider this.

We checked in at the hotel and expected the room to feel clean and comfortable. However, we were met by a room that didn't feel very clean. The wallpaper on the looked a bit loose in the seems, color was coming off on the edge of the ceilings and the carpet on the floor had some visible dark spots/stains. The bathroom floor also had dark stains/spots and the shower was pretty hard to operate as it was a bit difficult to turn off. The bathroom sink seemed a little clogged as water ran down very slowly. We also noticed some hairs on the floor of the bedroom that wasn't ours. We were three people sharing a room and it got a little cramped. Two is better to not feel like it's too small. We paid around ~1020 HKD per night for the room which felt a bit expensive considering the condition the room was in. The location was great though and the staff was nice. The hotel is a few minutes walk from the metro and travelling around the city is easy. It is also close to restaurants, shopping and convenience stores. I would recommend staying here if you don't mind your room potentially being a little bit unclean or at least feel that way.

The hotel's location is excellent, right outside are the subway, bus, and taxis, making transportation very convenient. The only downside was the large number of Central Asian guests who were quite noisy. A few Central Asian children were constantly playing loudly in the hallway, and used food containers were piled up along the corridor after people ordered fast food.

I was a bit hesitant at first, seeing some of the negative reviews, but it turns out I made the right choice. The room was very clean, and they use cards to indicate which amenities you'd like replaced. They even folded my clothes neatly. Different floors offer different recreational activities, but I was short on time this trip and couldn't check them out. There are plenty of great food options downstairs. The Michelin-starred Yat Tung Heen offers dim sum for lunch and à la carte for dinner; you can book online. Transportation nearby is also very convenient, making it super easy to get around. Overall, I'm very satisfied with my stay. The only hiccup was that when I tried to book a data package during the reservation process, it kept failing and getting canceled. I ended up contacting Trip.com customer service, who helped me book a data SIM card package, and then the order went through successfully.

It's also about a one-kilometer walk from Sha Tin MTR Station. The concierge, front desk, and room service staff are all very friendly and helpful, always ready to assist. Whenever I visit HK, I always choose to stay at The Empire Hotel Tsim Sha Tsui. It's a comfortable stay with convenient access to everything. I especially appreciate the dehumidifier in the room; it's a lifesaver in May when Hong Kong's high humidity makes drying clothes a nightmare. Alice Liu at the front desk felt more like an old friend, providing incredibly thoughtful service. The special afternoon tea is also a personal favorite of mine. A big thank you to all the hotel staff, from the housekeepers to the front desk team, for their professional service.

Tsuen Wan Hong Kong|7.01km from downtown
This is an older, reputable four-star hotel chain in Hong Kong, and this Tsuen Wan location is the most affordable. I chose it for my island-hopping trip to Hong Kong, finally fulfilling my wish to swim and hike at Half Moon Bay in Sai Kung. I booked a room with either a king or twin beds. On the first night, being a Saturday, there were more tourists, so the hotel didn't have any king rooms left and just pushed two twin beds together, which was a bit tight. On Sunday, I asked to switch rooms, and they accommodated me immediately, but there was no complimentary upgrade; upgrades cost extra. The room was quite small, barely enough space to open two carry-on suitcases. Some of the garden view rooms faced an old, dilapidated gray factory building, which wasn't very appealing. The rooms have been newly renovated, and each comes with an air purifier. If you don't have a converter, there are USB ports by the bed for charging. There's a TV with movie channels, which was a nice bonus. Unfortunately, the bathroom in the king room had a minor leak, but it dried up after the room was cleaned. The cleaning was thorough, and they replenished tissues and toilet paper. They'll change the sheets upon request. The hotel doesn't provide toothbrushes or toothpaste, but you can buy them at Mannings, about a 10-minute walk away. They also don't provide bottled water, but there's a water dispenser in the hallway. Theoretically, tap water in Hong Kong is drinkable, but some buildings have old pipes, so filtering is a good idea. From 11 AM to 5 PM daily, the hotel offers self-serve complimentary drinks at the entrance; the Roselle tea and longan ginger tea were both delicious. The hotel is about a 10-minute walk from Tai Wo Hau MTR station and about a 20-minute walk from Kwai Hing MTR station, but there are plenty of buses nearby, and the double-decker bus offers great views. In April, the hotel's swimming pool wasn't open yet. The gym is open 24 hours and has some cardio equipment, 1-10kg dumbbells, a weight bench, and yoga mats, along with sweat towels. The hotel has a restaurant and a cafe. The front desk service was a bit average, but the concierge and restaurant staff were very good. There's also a shuttle bus to nearby shopping malls. The 7-Eleven at the entrance is open from 7 AM to 11 PM, which is convenient for buying things. However, the hotel doesn't have a microwave, so you can't heat food when the 7-Eleven is closed. There are many restaurants in the residential area, about a 10-minute walk away, offering choices like cha chaan tengs, beef noodles, and char siu rice, and most stay open late. Check-out is quite early at 11 AM. I called the front desk to request a 12 PM check-out, and they said it would cost an extra HKD 130. After check-out, luggage can be stored for free until midnight that day; after midnight, it's HKD 10 per piece per day. When I went to pick up my luggage, I saw a tour group from mainland China, which gives you an idea of the number of tourists the hotel hosts on weekends. Overall, I would still highly recommend it; it offers excellent value for money in Hong Kong!

Free upgrade to a premium room (with view): Very good, the city view was especially beautiful, and the front desk staff had excellent service. Hotel shuttle bus service: Very convenient, it can reach many major tourist attractions. Due to Hong Kong's plastic ban, free toothbrushes are not provided, but you can buy one for one dollar from a vending machine, so you don't need to bring your own toothbrush and toothpaste. The hotel is right next to Happy Valley, and it's not too far to walk to Causeway Bay, so the overall location is very good.

The Grand Hyatt Hong Kong is my top choice when visiting the city. Its location is truly unbeatable, right in the heart of Wan Chai, next to the Exhibition Centre. It's just a short walk to the MTR station, making it incredibly convenient to get to popular areas like Central and Causeway Bay. It's perfect for both business trips and leisure travel. The hotel has a luxurious, elegant, and high-end business style. The lobby is clean and refined with a premium feel. Check-in and check-out were very efficient, and the front desk staff were warm and polite. They communicated smoothly in Cantonese, Mandarin, and English, offering meticulous and thoughtful service, making the entire experience comfortable. I stayed in a sea-view room with an absolutely stunning view. The floor-to-ceiling windows offered direct panoramic views of Victoria Harbour's beautiful seascape. During the day, I could take in the bustling city skyline, and at night, I enjoyed the dazzling nightscape—the ambiance was simply incredible. The room itself was spacious and bright, with a well-planned and tidy layout. The soft furnishings were simple yet upscale, and the bedding was soft and gentle on the skin, ensuring a stable and comfortable sleep after a long day of travel or work. The room amenities were comprehensive and excellent. The high-speed internet worked flawlessly, and the toiletries were of high quality. The bathroom was clean and fresh with a dry/wet separation. The lighting and soundproofing were both very good, providing a quiet retreat despite being in a lively area; I wasn't disturbed by any outside noise. The hotel's breakfast buffet offered a rich and diverse selection, with both Chinese and Western dishes available. The ingredients were fresh, and the flavors were authentic. There was a wide variety of drinks, desserts, and special Hong Kong snacks, making for a very pleasant breakfast experience. The hotel also features recreational facilities like a swimming pool and fitness center, perfect for exercising and relaxing in your free time. The supporting services are truly complete. Overall, my stay was a perfect 10. The hardware facilities were high-end and well-maintained, the service was attentive and thoughtful, and the location was excellent, offering great convenience. It's particularly suitable for couples on vacation, families, or business travelers. It's my first choice when I come to Hong Kong. Both the value for money and the experience were exceptional. I'll definitely choose to stay here again on my next visit to Hong Kong. Highly recommended!
