What Is The Weather Like in Chengdu?

Chengdu has a humid monsoon climate. This is shaped by its location in the Sichuan Basin, where the elevation is around 500 metres above sea level. The hills around Chengdu act like a barrier. They hold in moisture and heat. This is why Chengdu has humidity, lots of clouds and frequent fog. There is also strong sunshine compared to Singapore.

The year in Chengdu is divided into four seasons. There is no dry summer like the one seen in northern Chinese cities. The average temperature, across the year is 16°C. The highest temperature ever recorded was 37.3°C. The lowest was. 5.9°C.

Rainfall is plentiful. It mostly happens during the monsoon months of July, August and September. Autumn brings a notable pattern called "night rain." Showers often fall at night. This keeps the air fresh during the day.

Summer (June to August)

Along with the heat, summer is also the rainy season in Chengdu. The months of July and August each have than 200 millimetres of rain over about 17 days of rain with many afternoon showers. You will need sun protection, a lot of water a small umbrella and clothes that let air flow.

Chengdu Panda

For sightseeing and outdoor activities, the two golden windows are mid-March to early June and early September to mid-November. Within these, April and October are the true sweet spots, with comfortable temperatures, lighter rain and clearer skies.

Best Time for the Giant Panda Base

The best time to visit the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding is the early morning, roughly 7:30 to 10:00, when the pandas are most active and being fed. This window is also cooler in the warmer months.

Best Time for Mount Qingcheng & Dujiangyan

The best time to hike Mount Qingcheng and visit the ancient Dujiangyan irrigation system is from April to June and September to November. These months bring comfortable daytime temperatures, lighter rain and clear views from the mountain paths. The forested trails of Qingcheng are also at their greenest after the spring rains.

Best Time for City Walks (Kuanzhai Alley, Jinli, People's Park)

  • Warm layers: For autumn or winter, bring sweaters, a down jacket or hoodies. Nights get genuinely chilly.
  • Umbrella or raincoat: Chengdu weather can change quickly with summer downpours and autumn night rain.
  • Waterproof shoes: Whether you are exploring old lanes or park paths, dry feet make a big difference.
  • Face mask: Useful on winter days and for anyone prone to spring pollen allergies.
  • Mosquito repellent: Essential in spring and summer.
  • Sun protection: Sunglasses, a hat and sunscreen for the sun of late spring and summer.

What Travel Tips Should You Know Before Visiting Chengdu?

  • Mind the crowds. Popular spots such as the Panda Base and Kuanzhai Alley become busy on weekends and holidays. Visit early or during off‑peak times to keep away from the rush.
  • The Chengdu Metro is efficient, cheap. Covers the whole city. Fares are about S0.50 to S1.50 per ride.
  • WeChat Pay and Alipay are widely used. If you cannot set these up keep some cash handy because international cards are not always accepted.
  • Consider buying a China eSIM so you have data from the moment you land at Chengdu Tianfu Airport. Book the Panda Base in advance. Tickets cost about S$10 (¥55). Must be reserved online for a timed slot. Wuhou Shrine and Du Fus Thatched Cottage cost, around S$9 each. Kuanzhai Alley and Jinli are free.
