Chengdu is the capital of Sichuan Province in China. It is located in the Chengdu Plain, which's very fertile. This plain is at the edge of the Sichuan Basin.

Chengdu has several major railway stations serving different directions and train types. Popular train routes from Chengdu:

  • Chengdu → Chongqing: ~1–1.5 hours by high-speed train, from around S$15
  • Chengdu → Xi'an: ~3–4 hours by high-speed train, from around S$40
  • Chengdu → Leshan: ~1 hour by high-speed train, from around S$10
  • Chengdu → Dujiangyan: ~30 minutes by intercity train, from around S$3

By Metro

Chengdus metro system is really big. If you are a tourist, Line 2 is super helpful. It stops at lots of places like Chunxi Road, Taikoo Li, Kuanzhai Alley and Chengdu East Station. Line 3 is also great because it goes to the Giant Panda Base. Line 18 is good too. It connects Tianfu Airport to the city centre.

The main tourist spot in Chengdu is around Chunxi Road and Taikoo Li in Jinjiang District. This area is east of Tianfu Square. This is where you'll find the famous IFS building with its giant climbing panda sculpture, luxury boutiques, and the beautifully restored Daci Temple.

Chengdus tourist activity is centred around these areas.

  • Sino-Ocean Taikoo Li: Open-air lifestyle mall blending traditional architecture with modern brands

Cultural & Historical Sites

Chengdu's cultural attractions are mainly clustered in the western and southwestern parts of the city, within Qingyang and Wuhou districts.

  • Wuhou Shrine: The most famous Three Kingdoms historical site, dedicated to strategist Zhuge Liang.
  • Jinli Ancient Street: Adjacent to Wuhou Shrine, this atmospheric pedestrian street is lined with traditional architecture, snack stalls, and red lanterns.
  • Sichuan University Area: Lively student district with affordable eateries and bookshops.

Qingyang District (west):

  • Kuanzhai Alley: Three restored Qing-dynasty alleyways (Wide, Narrow, and Well) with teahouses, restaurants, and craft shops.
  • People's Park: Classic Chengdu park where locals drink tea, play mahjong, and practice calligraphy. Don't miss the Heming Teahouse.
  • Du Fu Thatched Cottage: Museum and park commemorating the Tang Dynasty poet Du Fu.

The Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding is 10 kilometres north of the city centre in Chenghua District. This place is not in the area where tourists usually go, so you will need to plan a special trip to visit.

How to get to the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding:

  • Metro Line 3 to Panda Avenue Station, then a short taxi or shuttle bus ride (10–15 minutes)
  • Direct taxi from the city centre: 25–40 minutes depending on traffic
