The Ultimate Guide to the Chengdu Panda Base: Everything You Need to Know Before You Go
We spent a full day on the grounds and clocked almost 29,000 steps—so this guide isn't based on internet reviews, but on real, firsthand experience. Here you'll find it all: where to head first, how to avoid wasting half your day in lines, and why it's totally worth waking up early for one specific panda.

Who Lives Here and Who to Look Out For
Huahua — The Panda From Your Memes
If you've ever seen a video online of a chubby panda sitting like a little dumpling, calmly munching on bamboo—chances are, it was Huahua. Her round, triangular figure and absolute indifference to the world around her made her a social media star long before your arrival.
📍 Sub-adult Giant Panda Enclosure. The staff actively directs everyone walking in there—it's hard to miss.
💡 Pro-tip for early birds: The base opens at 7:30 AM. If you enter through the South Gate and head straight to the enclosure, you can be there almost completely alone by 8:00 AM. An hour later, it'll be a completely different story.

The Babies — The Most Heartwarming Spot on the Base
The "Sunshine" and "Moonlight" Nursery Houses are basically playrooms for baby pandas. They tumble over each other, try to climb on logs, and occasionally fall asleep right in the middle of playtime. Some are still holding milk bottles—a sight that instantly boosts almost anyone's mood.
🐾 Fun fact: Newborn pandas weigh about 100 grams—roughly the size of an apple. They are born pink and practically hairless, and only start to get their iconic black-and-white coats after a few weeks.

The Panda Tower — The Best Viewpoint
The observation deck, standing about 70 meters high, gives you a rare chance to take in the entire area at a glance: bamboo groves, winding paths, and pavilions scattered among the greenery. It looks especially stunning in the morning light when the fog hasn't lifted yet.
There's a themed cafe in the tower—a great spot to grab a coffee and recharge before tackling the second half of your route.
⚠️ Heads up: The tower is closed on Tuesdays.

Red Pandas — A Surprise Few People Know About
Many people come for the giant pandas and don't expect to run into red pandas too—fluffy, reddish-brown creatures about the size of a cat. In the free-roaming area, they sometimes walk right up to people, which feels totally surreal.
⚠️ Important: Don't touch them—behind that cute exterior lie very real wild instincts.

How to Plan Your Route
If you're short on time — About 3 hours
South Gate → Huahua → "Sunshine" Pavilion → "Moonlight" Pavilion → Panda Tower → Exit through West Gate.
This route covers the highlights without unnecessary walking. Perfect for those doing a day trip to Chengdu who want to squeeze in other sights besides the base.

If you want the full experience and lots of photos — 4–5 hours
West Gate → Hill and Moon Pavilion → Adventure Valley → Panda Tower → Delivery Houses → Sub-adult Panda Enclosure → Exit through South Gate.
This route goes against the main tourist traffic—you'll see fewer backs of heads and more actual pandas. The bamboo alleys along the way provide a beautiful, natural backdrop for your photos.

Practical Tips
∙	Arrive at 7:30 AM — The difference between an early and late visit is huge. In the morning, it's quiet, the pandas are active, and there are barely any lines.
∙	Footwear matters. The area is massive and hilly in parts—flat canvas sneakers will quickly make you regret your choices. Good walking shoes are a must.
∙	Bring bug spray — There are mosquitoes in the bamboo forest even in the morning.
∙	The sightseeing shuttle bus runs throughout the base for ~30 RMB, and the pass is valid all day. If your legs give out halfway through your visit, this is a lifesaver.
∙	Free panda stamp — Look for a small booth next to the souvenir shop. If you keep a travel journal, don't miss it.
∙	Pandas sleep at noon. Deeply and happily. Plan the active part of your itinerary for the morning.
∙	Flash photography and feeding are strictly prohibited — Pandas are China's national treasure, and they take the rules very seriously here.

What Else to Do
🧸 The official store sells plush toys by Pandapia—probably the best souvenir from the base that you'd actually be proud to gift.
🍜 Just outside the grounds, there's a small food block. It's a great excuse to try authentic Sichuan cuisine right after your visit—spicy, aromatic, and nothing like what's served in Chinese restaurants outside of China.
📱 Free up some storage space on your phone beforehand. Seriously. Pandas yawn, fall off logs, and fall asleep with bamboo in their mouths—and you'll want to capture every single moment. You'll go home with hundreds of videos that you'll be showing off to everyone you know for months.

Chengdu is a city where pandas have long been a core part of its identity. The base isn't just a zoo; it's a place where these animals are genuinely cared for and studied. You can really feel it.
The golden rule is simple: The earlier you get there, the better your experience will be. 🐼

Another must-visit location in Chengdu is Kuanzhai Alley, also known as the "Wide and Narrow Alleys" (宽窄巷子).

This is a highly unique tourist district because it’s distinctly divided into two different vibes, yet they are easily walkable within the same area.

🌿 Wide Alley
The atmosphere is open and comfortable to walk around, featuring a more luxurious and modern touch. It’s filled with beautifully decorated restaurants, cafes, and chill teahouses. The vibe is similar to a trendy cafe district, yet it perfectly retains its Chinese essence.

🏮 Narrow Alley
This alley gives off a more retro vibe. Strolling through it feels like experiencing the ancient Chinese way of life, blended with artsy boutiques. You'll find souvenirs, handmade crafts, small bars, and chic cafes tucked away in various corners.

What I love the most is the "fusion" of this place.
The seamless coexistence of the traditional and the modern doesn't clash at all. It makes exploring incredibly enjoyable, with photo spots at every turn.

📸 Endless photo opportunities
Whether it's the traditional Chinese doors, red lanterns, vintage-style shops, or chic cafes—no matter where you point your camera, the shots come out stunning.

💡 Tip
I recommend visiting from the late afternoon to the evening or at night. The lighting is gorgeous, and the atmosphere is at its most vibrant. It’s perfect for a leisurely stroll, snapping photos, and grabbing some light bites.

If you’re in Chengdu and looking for a relaxed vibe with everything in one spot, this is definitely a place you need to pin! 💖

Did a full day trip from Chengdu to Dujiangyan and it turned out to be one of the most well-rounded day trips — pandas, cafés, ancient streets, scenic rivers, and night views all in one.

Getting there is very easy: metro to Xipu Station (~45 mins) 🚇, short walk, then high-speed train to Lidui Park Railway Station (~30 mins) 🚄. Smooth and straightforward.

Yangtianwo Square → Shuijie Street
After arriving, it’s a short walk to Yangtianwo Square and then Dujiangyan Shuijie Street.

A calm start to the day with open square views, mountains in the distance ⛰️, and a riverside stretch lined with cafés and traditional-style buildings. Peaceful in the morning and great for slowly easing into the trip.

Dujiangyan Panda Valley 🐼
About 20 mins by DiDi to Dujiangyan Panda Valley.

Here you’ll see giant pandas eating bamboo, lounging, and climbing, plus red pandas that are much more active and playful 🌳. Compared to Chengdu’s main panda base, it’s quieter, more spacious, and feels closer to nature. Go earlier if possible for the most activity.

Zhongshuge Bookstore
A ~15 min DiDi to Zhongshuge Bookstore (Sunac Mall).

A quick but stunning stop with mirror illusions, endless reflections ✨, and tunnel-like bookshelves. Feels more like an art installation than a bookstore.

Panda Tram 🚋
About 20 min walk to the station, then ~40 min ride.

A panda-themed tram with elevated views of the city and river — a slow scenic break that lets you just sit back and take in Dujiangyan from above.

Wenmiaoshan Street → Guanxian Ancient City
~15 min DiDi to Wenmiaoshan Street.

This stretch is filled with cute cafés ☕, modern chill spots, and is great for a short break. A ~20 min walk then brings you into Guanxian Ancient City, where it shifts into a more traditional vibe with old architecture, busier streets, and lots of local snacks like soybean milk buns, congcong rolls, noodles, and pastries 🏮.

Dujiangyan Scenic Area → Night Views ✨
A ~30 min walk leads to Dujiangyan Scenic Area, passing historic walls and riverside paths.

At night, Nanqiao Bridge lights up beautifully 🌉 with golden reflections on the water. Continuing on, Tianfu Yuanlang Bridge and Lanyanlei Blue Tears give a soft blue glowing effect 💙 that feels dreamy and photogenic.

Dinner + Return
Ended the day back after having dinner at Dujiangyan - lively at night with river reflections and a relaxed atmosphere.

Return was simple: train (~30 mins) 🚄 + metro (~45 mins) 🚇 back to Chengdu.

Tired of temples and pandas? You have to check out this place! Dongjiaojiyi (Eastern Suburb Memory) is the ultimate hangout spot for Chengdu's youth, transforming an abandoned factory into an ultra-chic art district.

It's an absolute paradise for photography enthusiasts, seamlessly blending the old industrial structures with vibrant graffiti and modern cafes. You'll find a vintage locomotive, edgy brick walls, and a ton of vinyl record shops. You can easily spend the whole day strolling around without ever getting bored.

📍 How to get there:
🚇 Metro: Take Line 8 (light green) and get off at Dongjiao Memory Station (东郊记忆). Take Exit B1, and it's just a short walk to the entrance.

💡 Tips:
· Dress to impress: Bring your best Streetwear or Y2K fits—they totally match the vibe here!
· Come in the late afternoon: Catch the golden hour for some stunning photos, then stick around to see the place light up at night. You'll get two completely different vibes in one day!

Catching the Blue Tears in Dujiangyan

Watching the Blue Tears shimmer along the river at night felt almost unreal — like the water was quietly glowing under the bridge lights. Located less than an hour from Chengdu, Dujiangyan is an easy and fulfilling day trip that blends nature, culture, pandas and historic charm all in one. From ancient engineering marvels to trendy bookstores and mountain views, it’s a destination that feels both peaceful and vibrant at the same time.

While many visitors pair Dujiangyan with Qingchengshan, we dedicated a full day here, and it was more than enough to experience a good mix without rushing too much.

Dujiangyan Day Trip Itinerary 🌿🐼

🌥️ Morning
· Take the metro to Xipu Subway Station, then transfer to Xipu Railway Station towards Lidui Park Railway Station (the high-speed train ride is short and smooth)
· Yangtianwo Square (giant panda selfie spot — a fun and iconic photo stop to start the day)
· Breakfast at Dujiangyan Shuijie Street (local eats by the riverside to fuel up)
· DiDi to Dujiangyan Xiongmao Valley / Panda Valley (a quieter alternative to Chengdu’s main panda base, with a more spacious, nature-filled setting)

☀️ Daytime & Evening
· Zhongshuge Book Store (Level 2 of Sunac Mall — dramatic mirrored interiors and maze-like bookshelves that make it feel straight out of a fantasy film)
· Panda Tram M-TR Line to East Liyutuo Station for mountain photos (optionally continue to Bajiao Temple Station to take DiDi from there) – fixed price 10 yuan (scenic, affordable and less crowded)
· Wenmiaoshan Street (charming stretch with cafes, teahouses and aesthetic corners for photos)
· Guanxian Ancient City (cobblestone streets, red lanterns and traditional architecture — great for a slow wander)
· Ming Dynasty Wall (a preserved reminder of the city’s long history)
· Dujiangyan Scenic Area (optional if time allows — home to the UNESCO-listed irrigation system that has functioned for over 2,000 years)
· Nanqiao Bridge, Blue Tears (best experienced after sunset when the reflections and lights bring the river to life)

🥢 Food Recommendations
· Leyili
· Yepopo Soybean Milk Momo
· Wenge Congcongjuan
· Zhaomaimian
· Hujidan Honggaoxiao Cake

Return
Lidui Park Railway Station → Xipu Railway Station → transfer back to metro

Dujiangyan is one of those places that surprises you — not overly hectic, not overly commercial, yet packed with variety. From panda encounters and mountain panoramas to glowing night rivers and ancient streets, it’s a day trip from Chengdu that feels beautifully balanced.

This place has an amazing location, perfectly situated between the IFS building and Taikoo Li. Right outside, there's a famous Mala hotpot place on the right, and a Holiland bakery plus a well-known baked shrimp with glass noodles restaurant on the left. The room itself is incredibly spacious with clearly divided zones. Check-in is on the 2nd floor, and the entrance gives off an apartment vibe, located right on the main road. At night, you get a fantastic view of the neon lights from the surrounding shops right from your room. I stayed here with my mom and we booked a city view room. The total came to just 2,171 THB for the two of us, which breaks down to a super cheap 1,085 THB per night (only 542 THB per person)! If you're planning a trip to Chengdu, I highly recommend this place!

🐼🇨🇳 There's more to Chengdu than just pandas.

The hottest check-in spot, Kuanzhai Alley (Wide and Narrow Alley), is an incredibly chic historic neighborhood that perfectly blends classic charm with a cool, modern vibe—a solid 10/10!

Stepping into the alley feels like time-traveling back to the Qing Dynasty. But as you stroll around, bam! You'll stumble upon minimalist cafes and super chill traditional teahouses. There are authentic Sichuan restaurants, plus a Pop Mart store ready to take your money!

The overall vibe is perfect for a laid-back stroll. It's a joy to shop, eat, and snap photos here. If you visit Chengdu and skip this spot, you're totally missing out!

Chengdu Itinerary.
What is there to see in Chengdu besides pandas?

Here is an itinerary for a few days

1 First things first, head over to Taikoo Li Chengdu (太古里成都)—a high-end, open-air pedestrian shopping district in downtown Chengdu (Jinjiang District) that perfectly blends modern architecture and luxury boutiques with traditional Sichuan-style buildings featuring tiled roofs.

2 The ancient Buddhist Daci Temple (大慈寺). This is a unique spot located right in the middle of
Taikoo Li Chengdu.

3 The giant panda sculpture climbing up the wall is located on the Chengdu IFS (International Finance Square) shopping mall building in downtown Chengdu.

4 Check out the beautiful Anshun Corridor Bridge. It features a historical style. It's fascinating to stroll along the waterfront promenade, which is filled with cafes and restaurants.

5 Just across from the bridge, you can grab a bite at LA Costa Luming Spanish Restaurant (Shangri-La Branch).

6 You absolutely must visit the Chengdu Museum! It's incredibly interesting, and entry is free with your passport.

7 Come in the evening after dark to see the beautifully illuminated Twin Towers at Financial City (金融城).

8 The best view of the towers is from the circular bridge right across from them. The bridge itself is also quite unique.

Afterward, take a walk down Jiaozi Avenue. The lighting there is gorgeous.

9 🌿 Make sure to visit the municipal People's Park - Chengdu No.1 Air-raid Shelter (成都一号防空洞).

10 ⛩️ Stroll down Jinli Old Street (锦里古街).
The architecture here is in a traditional style, and there are plenty of cafe-teahouses hosting face-changing mask shows.

11🎭 You definitely have to watch a mask show in Chengdu! It's a unique performance where the actor magically changes masks.
