Things to Do in Chongqing

As a Singaporean traveler, you might first think of Chongqing as a bustling city with a mix of modernity and traditional charm. While it's no Marina Bay Sands, the skyline here is impressive with its towering skyscrapers and vibrant neon lights.

The pace of life is slightly slower, allowing you to take in the unique blend of urban and natural beauty. Chongqing's weather is warmer than Singapore's tropical heat, but the cool evenings make it perfect for exploring its famous hotpot scene or strolling along the Yangtze River. So the best time to visit Chongqing is in spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) when the weather is mild.

Chongqing offers a sensory overload, from the spicy, savory flavors of local dishes to the hum of night markets and street vendors. Singaporeans will find themselves diving into food-hunting adventures, with everything from mouth-watering Sichuan hotpot to delicious street snacks.

It's a great spot for sightseeing too, with fascinating cultural sites and vibrant nightlife. Let’s dive into things to do in Chongqing!

This museum narrates the monumental transformation of the Yangtze River basin. Once a lively city, it has now become a memory after the construction of the dam. The museum is filled with stories known only to the locals, making it a 'hidden treasure' that few have heard of.

"Normally, I don't use the word 'heartbreaking' to describe a museum, but this underwater museum truly deserves it. Standing by the river in Yichang, there are no grand staircases or fancy lights here—just sorrowful tales that the entire city once bore. The phrase 'Three Gorges Migration' carries a weight beyond imagination. Upon entering, you are greeted by a wall of bricks from actual homes, each brick labeled with the name of the family it belonged to. It reminded me of a line from the novel 'Riverfront City': 'The Yangtze River people... spent their lives practicing farewells.'

'Unable to bring the river water home,
They took a handful of soil instead.'

On the day 1.35 million people had to relocate, these words became the heaviest burden for many families. The exhibition hall recreates the memory of the 'Old City Beneath the River.' The old stone floors where children once played, the aroma of food wafting from wooden houses, the sound of boats, the lights of homes, and the tea shops—all seem frozen in time before the city sank underwater. As I left the museum, the evening light turned the river golden, making me realize that the deepest sorrow of a hometown is not staying behind but having the courage to 'carry the entire river forward.'

📍 Location: Three Gorges Migration Museum, Hubei Province
Yichang City, near the Three Gorges Dam
Cost: Free entry
Reservation required via Chinese apps or the museum's website
Duration: Approximately 2–3 hours

Take a trip to Youyang County during your Chongqing adventure. The weather was perfect on the day of my visit, so I decided to stay here for two days before continuing my journey. Upon arrival, I discovered that although the town is small, it is packed with numerous attractions. Many places I thought were far away turned out to be conveniently included in this area, quite unexpectedly! 😅

Opposite the Peach Blossom Spring lies the Youzhou Ancient Town, and my hotel was just about 200 meters away. 😊 This change of scenery was truly refreshing.

Taigu Cave (太古洞) is located at the end of the "Shiwa Taohuayuan" route in Youyang District, Chongqing.

Key details of the cave: It stretches approximately 2,500 meters in length, with a width ranging from 10 to 25 meters and a maximum height of 60 meters.

The cave's unique features include its "dangerous–mysterious–isolated–awe-inspiring" beauty, with numerous clear stalactites and stalagmites of various shapes and forms that seem almost alive. Venturing deeper into the cave feels like walking through an ancient forest, experiencing the beauty of a bygone era. The high cliffs and large dome halls amplify sounds, creating a resonating echo. The terraced landscapes with varying heights evoke a sense of grandeur and depth. This entire atmosphere makes it feel like stepping back tens of thousands of years.

World-renowned karst geology experts have stated that Taigu Cave holds the highest scientific value, is the oldest, and is the most "marvelous underground" among China's developed caves. It is a perfect masterpiece of natural art.
