The best time to visit Chongqing is in spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) when the weather is mild, and the scenery is at its best. These months offer comfortable temperatures, lush greenery, and clear skies—perfect for sightseeing and outdoor adventures.

Winter (December to February) is great if you love a cosy, misty atmosphere and want to enjoy hotpot in its best season. Meanwhile, summer (June to August) can be scorching, but if you don’t mind the heat, it’s a great time for budget travellers.

Ultimately, the best time to visit depends on what you want to experience—let’s break it down by season!

❤️Pro Tip: With many flights from Singapore to Chongqing every day, you will get to Chongqing in just 5 hours! And don't forget to book Chongqing hotels in advance.

Best time to visit Chongqing by season

Before you start planning your Chongqing adventure, let’s talk about the weather and temperature in Chongqing—because it plays a big role in your experience!

Chongqing has a humid subtropical climate, which means summers can be scorching and humid, while winters are damp and chilly. But spring and autumn? That’s when the city is at its most comfortable and scenic!

Spring (March - May): Comfortable weather & blooming flowers

Chongqing spring

Spring is one of the best times to visit Chongqing. The temperature ranges from 12°C - 26°C (54°F - 79°F), with mild weather and blooming flowers. It’s a great season for sightseeing before the summer heat kicks in.

🌿 What to wear: Light layers and a thin jacket. Spring showers are common, so carry an umbrella.

🌸 Best things to do:

  • Stroll through Elin Park or Nanshan Botanical Garden to see beautiful spring blossoms.
  • Take a Yangtze River cruise to enjoy the scenic views in comfortable weather.
  • Explore Ciqikou Ancient Town before the summer crowds arrive.

🎊 Events & Festivals:

  • Chongqing International Marathon (March/April): Join or watch runners race through the city!
  • Peach Blossom Festival (March): Best seen in Tongnan or Changshou District.

💡 Tip: April and May offer the best balance of weather and fewer tourists, making them ideal for outdoor activities.

Summer (June - August): Hot & humid

Chongqing summer

Summer in Chongqing is extremely hot and humid, with temperatures reaching 35°C (95°F) or more. It’s one of China’s "Three Furnaces," so expect sweltering days.

☀️ What to wear: Loose, breathable clothing like cotton or linen. Sunscreen, a hat, and an umbrella are a must!

🍉 Best things to do:

  • Try Chongqing hotpot—locals say spicy food helps cool you down!
  • Visit the Wulong Karst National Geopark for refreshing mountain views.
  • Escape the heat in underground attractions like Hongya Cave.

🎆 Events & Festivals:

  • Dragon Boat Festival (June): Enjoy traditional rice dumplings and boat races.
  • Chongqing International Music & Beer Festival (July/August): A fun way to beat the heat with live music and drinks!

💡 Tip: Avoid outdoor sightseeing at midday—go exploring early in the morning or after sunset.

Autumn (September - November): The most scenic season

Chongqing autumn

Autumn is arguably the best time to visit Chongqing. The summer heat fades, and temperatures range from 15°C - 28°C (59°F - 82°F). The weather is crisp, and the city’s parks and mountains are covered in red and golden autumn leaves.

🍂 What to wear: A light sweater or jacket for cooler mornings and evenings.

🍁 Best things to do:

  • Take a cable car ride over the Yangtze River for stunning autumn views.
  • Visit Jinfo Mountain or Wansheng Heishan Valley for breathtaking fall foliage.
  • Explore Dazu Rock Carvings, a UNESCO-listed cultural site.

🎊 Events & Festivals:

  • Mid-Autumn Festival (September/October): Eat mooncakes and admire the full moon.
  • Chongqing Hotpot Festival (October/November): A paradise for spicy food lovers!

💡 Tip: Avoid travelling during Golden Week (Oct 1-7)—it’s one of the busiest holidays in China.

Winter (December - February): Cold but festive

Chongqing winter

Winter in Chongqing is mild compared to northern China, with temperatures ranging from 5°C - 12°C (41°F - 54°F). While you won’t see much snow, the city gets foggy and misty, creating a unique, atmospheric beauty.

Jiangbei Area Chongqing|3.43km from downtown
The location is fine for what I wanted. It is close to dozens of fantastic cafes, bars and restaurants on and around Ziwei street. However, I’m not sure I’d choose it again. It’s a bit old and tired now. The rooms were once apartments; there is a small kitchen unit (no longer equipped). The worst thing was the disgusting smell of stale cigarette smoke in my non-smoking room. Even after 48 hours of open windows, it made no difference. The shower suddenly went freezing cold for a second or two approximately every minute (both mornings) and the utterly bizarre hard and sharp plastic spikes on the shower mat did not exactly improve the mood! The city view room is not worth paying for. It is a city view, but no landmarks. The traffic is noisy all night (especially with windows open due to cigarette smells)! As an internationally branded hotel, they need to do better in terms of stamping out smoking. I think I could have done better for the money and will seek to do so the next time I’m in Chongqing.

Although the hotel is clearly older, all the appliances are well maintained and in good shape, my room was clean and comfortable - one chair was really ready to be replaced, sagging through, but I just used the other one. The breakfast buffet was very good with only one exception: the chocolate donuts were stale. Plenty of other baked goods were delicious, though. Location was perfect for exploring the heart of Chongqing and close to metro station Lianglukou which is a good starting point to get to many sights. I would stay here again as service was prompt and friendly, too.

Was staying at the hotel in May this year but this time round the original 2 rooms that was assigned I am very disappointed that the Aircon was not working well. First time, they said that due to winter and it's all central system controlled so it's like this. They tried to solve the issue by bringing a cooler.. tried and it's totally no use at all. I compared the 2 rooms and my parents room was much warmer than mine so I had no choice but to go down and inform them about it. They did an excellent recovery by changing another room for my parents and they offered a suite for them. The room this time round is very cooling.. much cooler than mine but it's ok mine is still alright. I hope they will look into proper maintenance of the hotel.

Spacious room generally clean with all amenities provided. Location of the hotel was superb as it’s at the center of where all the famous must see places are (generally all walkable with 20mins) However the room was advertised as river view which was you could see it but there are definitely buildings blocking the view. Secondly housekeeping wasn’t the cleanest, I found they sometimes just refold used towels instead of replacing them.
