LLiuyaziHow do I even begin to describe this? I've traveled for work and pleasure many times, but this is the first time I've lost something in a hotel shopping mall. It leaves me speechless, and I can only blame myself for not looking after my belongings properly. Here’s a brief rundown:
1. I checked into the hotel on the 12th and checked out on the 13th. On the evening of the 13th, around 9 PM, I went back to the hotel to pick up my luggage. I used the restroom in the hotel's shopping mall and left my hand-carry (a white bag containing newly purchased sunglasses and a can of Coke) there, without realizing it at the time.
2. I checked out and returned to Zhuhai before 10 PM that night. Around midnight, I remembered the sunglasses were missing. I called the hotel, and they helped me get in touch with housekeeping. The cleaner said they found the bag (the hotel later reported it was found during cleaning around 11 PM), but it only contained a can of Coke, no sunglasses. At the time, the cleaner didn't think there were any valuables and didn't report it. The hotel staff on duty were quite diligent and kept trying to help me find them. They then suggested I report it to the police, after finding the bag but no sunglasses, and confirming I was a hotel guest.
3. I called the police, but the person who answered had a poor attitude (which really dampened my good impression of Macau). She said I had to go to the police station in person to file a report, and that they couldn't handle it over the phone. I asked what would happen after reporting the loss, and she said she couldn't answer, and it would depend on the responding officer's follow-up.
4. I already had a return flight booked for the 14th and couldn't go back to Macau to file a report in person. The hotel said the cleaner found it at 11 PM and the glasses were already gone, and they also don't have the authority to view the surveillance footage.
So, this is how it ended. While it was primarily my fault for not watching my belongings, and the hotel security also patiently searched, I still feel uncomfortable:
1. The glasses were bought at 5 PM and lost by 9 PM, with only the glasses missing, but the drink still there.
2. When I went to the restroom, my son was waiting outside for me. The mall was about to close, and there were very few people in the hotel; I didn't see anyone come out.
3. Since I couldn't go back to report it in person, I had to rely on the hotel's feedback, and they also wouldn't retrieve the surveillance.
4. I'm also impressed by the person who took the glasses; they were experienced, taking only the glasses and leaving the Coke and the bag.
All in all, it's not a good feeling. This is my second time in Macau, and I had planned to bring my parents again in April, but now I'm not so keen anymore.
Apologies to the hotel, but I really had nowhere else to vent my frustrations, so I'm doing it here.
