GGuest UserThis was my third trip to Shanghai. I initially planned for a week, but ended up staying three! (I gained 6 pounds from all the eating, drinking, and leisurely strolling in Shanghai. [chuckle]) I convinced my friend from Nanjing to visit, and under my strong recommendation, she tried a youth hostel for the first time. She gave positive feedback too! Accommodation in Shanghai is a bit pricier than other places, but other expenses are quite similar. So, staying at this hostel was truly a great value for money. I was comfortable during my stay, and any minor issues were resolved. The location is excellent; I stayed at the Yu Garden branch, which is about a 20-minute walk to the bustling Yu Garden, The Bund, and Nanjing Road. (Actually, the popular restaurants on Nanjing Road walking street often serve mass-produced, low-quality food. I ordered dumplings that were advertised as handmade, but they were just the cheapest frozen kind!) It's like how many famous commercial streets, like Jiefangbei in Chongqing or Chunxi Road in Chengdu, have quite disappointing food options. [facepalm emoji] Instead, I recommend checking out Ximeng Wet Market for local snacks and pastries, crispy fried meat, or walking four minutes from the hostel to Xiangbawang Local Cuisine Restaurant on Huangjiaque Road – it's like a 'senior's cafeteria' with wontons and Northeastern dumplings. The prices are affordable, and there's a wide variety of dishes to choose from. Local eateries are definitely much tastier. Dengba Youth Hostel has several branches in Shanghai. Once, when I was heading back, I accidentally navigated to the one near the train station, and I thought, 'Wait, this isn't right...' Hehe! 😈 People from all over the world gather here for travel, work, study, and life... This place offers a comfortable space for everyone. Thank you for all the conveniences you provide. I was also lucky to have great roommates. Some even gave me apples, lollipops, and snacks – it's so heartwarming to receive gifts from others! I paid attention to the details and saw a variety of interesting, quiet, upright, generous, sincere, hardworking, and cheerful lovely people here. As the saying goes (paraphrased): the 'you' you know isn't the real you; the 'you' others know isn't the real you; the 'others' you know are the real you. I love Shanghai and will definitely visit again, hopefully without gaining more weight! [doge emoji]

GGuest UserThe location of Dengba Hostel is simply tailor-made for lazy travelers! Right outside the door is the subway, no need to wait for buses or taxis, you can go wherever you want, whenever you want. These past few days in Shanghai, I woke up naturally every morning, then slowly took the subway to explore, and came back when I was tired at night, with absolutely no hassle. This kind of travel is truly relaxing! Front desk staff Xiao Wang provided excellent service.

In the common areas, you basically only hear people walking around or using the restrooms (conversations usually happen in the public areas, and I never heard anyone playing music loudly on their phone). The soundproofing in the rooms is excellent; once you close the door in a single room, you can't hear anything from outside (occasionally, you might hear a neighboring door close, but I think that's normal).

GGuest UserThe location was in a lively part of Jing'an, although a little far from Jiangsu Road Station. I enjoyed the bicycle ride to the temple nearby, as it was a pretty neighborhood. Unfortunately, that is pretty much all the good things I have to say about this place. The facilities, the entire place in general, was old and run-down. I was assigned a bed at the far end of the room where my cell service cut off. Not really the establishment's fault but something worth mentioning in my opinion as the wifi was often slow. A section of the wood of the opposite bunk bed was black and seemed to be rotting. The air smelled moldy. The bed was huge though, which was nice. The place did not seemed to be getting the love and care it needed. The bathroom facilities were tiny with two shower stalls and a toilet (plus another separate one some distance away). It wasn't dirty necessarily but it wasn't exactly clean either. I did not feel comfortable using it however. None of the staff I interacted with spoke English (my fault for not learning some basic Chinese at least). I was disappointed by the quality I was met with since this is apparently the flagship? It wasn't cheaper compared to other hostels either. I felt bad but had to shorten my reservation and moved to a different place. But your standards might vary.

GGuest UserThis was a quadruple room, and the top bunk wasn't under the curtained-off section, so it got incredibly stuffy and hot in winter. Plus, there were no power outlets near the beds – just one for the entire room of four people, which was super inconvenient. The bathroom wasn't very clean either 😰, honestly, it was a bit frighteningly dirty 😨. The upsides: you can store your luggage 🧳, they provide earplugs and toothbrushes 🪥, and male and female accommodations are separate, though the common areas are shared. There isn't a convenience store nearby. Transportation is decent; the bus stop is very close, and the subway is an 8-minute walk. I've stayed here a few times before, but I might need to consider other options next time.

The value for money is unbeatable, and as someone who pays attention to details, I'm extremely satisfied.”,”The soundproofing is excellent, and the bedding is so soft. I slept soundly until I woke up naturally. This stay truly brought a sense of healing to my trip!”]

GGuest UserBeds are well equipped with light, locker, shelf and railing to hang towel/clothes. Mattress is really thin and fells like you’re sleeping directly on the bed frame. Room was small and dusty - there was a space to put luggage but it was taken up by a pile of stuff which meant most of the walkway had to be taken up by luggage. Good location.

BBlackeyedsamuraiBooked this hotel last minute, cause my favorite hotel is closing down business this month and i wanted something nearer cause I’m well versed with the surrounding areas, 1: the first red flag is the reception, mail and deliveries are all piled up and falling off shelves, it’s so dirty and humid, it looks like a hoarder’s poach, they’re no waiting chairs, so you’ll stand while they process the guests that came before you until it’s your turn !! The receptionists are very nice and helpful . 2; no room housekeeping ( you’ll have to ask for someone to come take the rubbish and give you towels or change your bedding. 3: THE FILTH!!! The filth is on level 1000/100 the grime made it hard for me to shower with my eyes open, I’m not sure if the place has a manager and if they care about the the wellbeing of the clients , because from what i saw, the cleaners don’t even bother, the floor had food stains from i think when they just opened, the sink🤮 the bathroom ( that one corner gave me the hibbigibeis) the toilet seat was broken , everything in the bathroom was broken and dirty , then my charger fell in the space which is between the bathroom glass and the bed, got down to retrieve it and i decided it was best to just a get a new charger instead. The place if cleaned and cared for would be an amazing hotel apartment, it has great amenities , a washing machine a fridge and a drying rack if you upgrade to a bigger room, a kitchenette that would be great if you are interested in cooking and staying longer and it’ has an Aldi downstairs, a gym and lots of other great places surrounding it . I really hope the owners would read this and take it into consideration and carry out serious supervision or else their property will lose value, The hygiene of the hotel does not only ensure the health and wellness of the visitors who sleep in those walls but also keeps the property value up. Dirt And filth only brings it down and puts the health of others at risk . I really hope they change standards.

MM49071****The best aspects were the convenient transportation and the clean and hygienic beds in the hostel. It's definitely recommendable! It would be even more perfect if the cleaning frequency were a bit higher.
