Travel to Guangzhou

Guangzhou is a southern city in China where ancient trade roots meet bold modern energy. As the heart of the Pearl River Delta, it’s a city of contrasts—centuries-old temples and leafy old streets blend effortlessly with mega malls and futuristic towers. Guangzhou is fast, fun, and full of flavour.

Guangzhou Nansha Yuexiu Sheraton Hotel

Found a kind of "pretend vacation" relaxation in Nansha 🏖️

To be honest, I was biased against Nansha at first—it’s too far, too remote, what fun could there be? But that weekend when a friend dragged me there and I stayed at this Sheraton, I completely changed my mind. It’s about an hour’s drive from downtown, a bit congested crossing the Humen Bridge, but once you enter Nansha, the roads suddenly widen, trees increase, and the moist scent of greenery instantly relaxes you. The hotel is right in the center of Nansha, next to Jiaomen River. The surroundings aren’t a messy commercial area but clean greenways and parks, making evening strolls especially pleasant.

A small detail in the room still sticks with me 🛏️

I stayed in a river view room, and at check-in the front desk lady specially told me, "We arranged a room with a sunset view for you." I didn’t think much of it then, but the next evening I was truly amazed—the sunset over Jiaomen River bathed the entire room in orange-red light. I sat on the sofa by the window for a long time; that kind of quiet can’t be felt in city hotels. A small detail in the room touched me: the bathroom amenities were the usual Sheraton brand, but they even added a small bottle of lavender essential oil, and on the bedside table was a handwritten card saying "Sleep well tonight." Honestly, I’ve seen such little touches before, but maybe it was the atmosphere that day—it really felt warm.

The wellness facilities are a hidden gem, and there are few people 🏊

I have to highlight the wellness facilities here. The gym and pool are on the third floor, and when I went, it was almost private. The pool is heated, the water very clean, and the floor-to-ceiling windows look out onto the river. Swimming a few laps then lying by the pool watching the view gives you a feeling of being very wealthy (though I’m not). The gym equipment isn’t extensive but has all the basics for cardio and strength training, and it’s well maintained without that sweaty smell. The biggest surprise was the sauna next door—after swimming, a steam session made me feel like I’d lost three pounds.

The surroundings are more than just "there’s a Tianhou Temple" ⛰️

Many people only know about the Tianhou Temple in Nansha, but there are plenty of places to explore around the hotel. A ten-minute walk gets you to the Jiaomen River greenway, perfect for morning runs or evening bike rides. Along the way, you’ll see locals fishing and picnicking; the slow pace of life is enviable. A ten-minute drive takes you to Nansha Waterbird World, home to free-range peacocks and pelicans, giving a wild vibe rather than a typical zoo feel. If you want to go further, in thirty minutes you can reach Million Sunflower Garden or Shijiu Chong Fisherman’s Wharf, where seafood is cheap and fresh. I bought some dried shrimp and squid strips at the wharf the next day to take home, half the price of city supermarkets.

Some little tips no one tells you 💡

· The hotel breakfast’s rice noodle roll stall makes them fresh to order; there’s a line but it’s worth the wait, smoother and more tender than many famous old shops outside
· If you go on the weekend, it’s best to arrive Friday night or early Saturday; you can negotiate a late checkout at 2 PM on Sunday to have enough time to explore nearby
· The hotel parking lot is large and car-friendly, but you can also take the subway—exit at Humen Station on Line 4 and a five-minute taxi ride
· Nearby is a place called "Nansha Yacht Club," great for drinks and night views, very photogenic and known mostly by locals

Since coming back, I’ve been thinking sometimes you don’t need to fly far; just an hour’s drive to change the environment can give you a breath of fresh air from daily life. Guangzhou Nansha Yuexiu Sheraton isn’t a trendy check-in hotel, but it has a solid comfort that suits those who really want to rest. Next time I plan to bring my parents here; I think they’ll like this quiet but well-equipped place.

❶ Lots of walking, so dress kids in comfortable sneakers, and parents too. Bring spare clothes for kids in case of sweat.
❷ Bring sunscreen and mosquito repellent; spring has many insects. Pack water and snacks in a small backpack to replenish energy anytime.
❸ Keep your phone handy for photos to capture precious moments of your kids playing.
❹ Avoid weekends and holidays if possible; weekdays are less crowded, making outings with kids easier and more relaxed.
❺ Some sections of Yunluo Botanical Garden have stairs. Parents with strollers can take gentler paths. Plan your route in advance.

Stayed at Huaxia Hotel (华厦大酒店) at the Haizhu Square branch (海珠广场店) during our last trip to Guangzhou. One of the biggest advantages of this hotel is its location, as it sits right around the Haizhu Square area, making it convenient to access nearby attractions, restaurants, and transportation.

The hotel itself feels a little old-school in style, but the rooms are generally clean and functional, which makes it suitable for travelers who are mainly looking for a comfortable place to rest after a full day of exploring the city. The space in the room was reasonable, and basic amenities were provided.

Because of its central location, getting around Guangzhou from here is quite easy, whether by metro or taxi. Many local eateries and shopping areas are also within walking distance.

Overall, Huaxia Hotel is a practical and convenient option for travelers who prioritize location and accessibility while visiting Guangzhou.

We booked a China Southern Airlines flight from Taiwan to Madrid, with a layover in Guangzhou.

Due to the long layover, we applied for China Southern's free transit accommodation.

Application Method: For flights with a layover exceeding 6 hours to Guangzhou Airport, you can apply on the China Southern website. Even if you're not staying overnight, you can still rest.

Getting There: Upon arrival at the airport, proceed to the China Southern transit accommodation counter at Gate 50 of Terminal 2. The counter staff will confirm your hotel information and arrange a free hotel shuttle.

Review:
· There is a 24-hour free shuttle service to and from the airport during your stay, running every half hour, which is very convenient. However, you need to carry your luggage onto the shuttle yourself; if you have a lot of luggage, it's recommended to check it through.

· The hotel offers free breakfast and lunch. The breakfast selection is limited, but at least you can eat something.

· The room was new and clean, the bed was comfortable, the bathroom was great, and the room was very spacious; there was no problem opening your suitcase. Toiletries were provided, just like a normal hotel stay.

· We brought a baby, and a free crib was provided. You can ask the front desk at check-in. The crib was sturdy and comfortable, and the baby had a great time playing in it. However, there was no baby bathtub; it would have been even better if there were.

· The road in front of the hotel is straight ahead; there are some vendors, convenience stores, and restaurants in the evenings. It's also not far from the night market, making it very convenient.

Overall, the hotel was fantastic. Comfortable rooms were the most important thing, and this free transit accommodation was truly excellent value. Everyone should try it if they have the chance.

Walk through vast bamboo forests, listen to the babbling streams, and breathe in the negative ions in the air. Kids can explore while walking, see the bamboo, hear the water, feel the freshness of nature, and get healthy exercise that’s both lung-cleansing and healing;
2️⃣ Mountain Delicacies · Authentic Farmhouse Cuisine: Mid-hike, enjoy farmhouse dishes in the village. Must-try is bamboo tube rice, where the rice absorbs the bamboo’s fresh aroma, soft and chewy. ✅ You can bring a picnic mat to spread under the cherry trees for a super atmospheric picnic. Pack snacks and fruit—kids will love it;
✅ Spring UV rays are strong, so prepare sunscreen essentials. Protect your kids with sunblock, hats, and arm sleeves;
