"The rooms are more spacious than they appear in the photos. The Onsen (hot spring bath) is small but very modern and well-maintained, and the service is absolutely fantastic! It's located in the old town of Takayama, so I'd say the location is perfect. The only drawback is that the rooms aren't soundproofed, so you can hear other guests."

"I honestly can't give this guesthouse even a slightly bad review; it's a perfect 100 out of 100, no, make that 150 points! The staff, both the young man and the ladies, prepared breakfast for us early. At 7:27 AM, they politely called our room to let us know breakfast was ready (it was supposed to start at 8 AM, but they knew we had a bus to catch, so they prepared it ahead of time). And when we arrived at the bus station yesterday, the young man was already waiting for us there, helping us carry our luggage upstairs to the front desk. The emotional value they provided was off the charts, and breakfast and dinner were both perfect! There's truly nothing to pick apart. No wonder this guesthouse has no bad reviews; it would feel wrong to give it even 0.1 points less. It absolutely deserves full marks plus 50 points!"

"This hotel is super close to Takayama Station. You just turn right when you exit the station and look up to see it. The hotel charges a hot spring bath fee and a hotel accommodation tax, regardless of whether you use the baths or not. There's a self-service coffee machine on the 2nd floor, and we stayed on the 8th floor, which had an ice machine. The 9th floor has private hot springs, which require reservations. Right off the elevator on the 9th floor, there's a foot bath area, and this floor also has an ice machine and a drink vending machine. Takayama town only has one FamilyMart convenience store, and it's right across from the station. Personally, I think Maruaki is tastier than Ajikura Tengoku 😋"

"The hotel, having hosted the Japanese Imperial Family, certainly lived up to expectations. Its design reflects an eco-friendly approach, and the staff are incredibly kind. The hotel's expansive souvenir shop is so well-stocked that even half an hour might not be enough to browse through it all. The hot springs also won me over; there are two large public baths, one on the first floor and one on the basement level. The basement one was particularly clean and featured an outdoor bath, which was incredibly relaxing. After a soak, grabbing an ice cream cone and milk from the shop right outside the first-floor bath was simply perfect!"

"Hotels in Takayama are usually quite expensive on weekends. I booked this one last minute and was pleasantly surprised. The room was spacious, very clean, and tidy. You can enjoy a hot spring bath on the top floor, and there are even family pools. It's really refreshing to have a popsicle after a soak. On the first floor, there are free iced drinks and a selection of manga to read. The only downside is the lack of dining options nearby, but everything else was great."

"First off, the location is super convenient, just about a three-minute walk from Takayama Station, and there are restaurants and convenience stores nearby. The room layout is typical for a business hotel, but the space is much larger, and the bed is big, making for a very comfortable stay. As for service, the front desk staff were very friendly and thoroughly explained the hotel's facilities and operating hours during check-in. Hardware-wise, it's generally a bit old, but there aren't any major issues with functionality. The only problem is the shower setup uses old-fashioned separate knobs for hot and cold water, which can make adjusting the water temperature a bit tricky."

"Stay was worth every penny. Hotel was located very close to train station and bus station so travelling to and out from it was convenient. Check in process was fast and easy to understand. They even had tea ready during checkin Room was decently sized and very clean. I arrived during spring and the beds were so comfortable and warm The highlight of the hotel has got to be the onsen. They have both private onsen that you can book for an hour and common onsen. If you go around midnight (the onsens are open till 1am), its completely empty and you can enjoy it all for yourself. Word of warning though, you can probably be seen if you're standing close to the edge of the public open air onsen so maybe dont do that (or do whatever floats your boat). After the onsen you can help yourself to free drinks and snacks They had beautiful sakura blossoms during that time, and a public foot bath that can be enjoyed by all. I loved my stay here and will definitely return if I have a chance."

"I highly recommend this onsen hotel! The environment, service, and food are all excellent. They have two outdoor private onsens and two indoor private onsens, all free of charge. The public outdoor onsen is also very large, and some rooms even come with their own onsen baths. After your bath, you can enjoy complimentary milk and cold drinks, and in the morning, Yakult. There's a sake happy hour in the evening, and free ramen for a late-night snack! I've stayed at over 20 onsen hotels, and this is the first time I've seen such generosity, haha. The hotel pays great attention to every detail, which is fantastic. For dinner, we chose the Hida beef kaiseki meal, which was also quite good. They offer a free shuttle service. I'll definitely stay here again next time I visit!"

"This hotel is very close to Takayama Station, though you do have to cross a skybridge to get there. The rooms are clean and tidy, and they're cleaned daily. If you don't need daily cleaning, the front desk will give you a complimentary bottle of water. They have public baths, hot springs, and free massage chairs. For breakfast, each person gets a Hida beef dish, and while the variety isn't huge, there's definitely enough to fill you up. The only downside is that the staff's English isn't great, so you'll need to use a translation app. Overall, I highly recommend this hotel."

"The room size was perfectly satisfactory, just enough space for two 24-inch suitcases. The hotel also has a large public bath on the second floor, which is a nice touch. You can rent electric-assist bicycles right outside the hotel for 500 JPY per hour, or 1000 JPY for three hours. Takayama is a very small city, so cycling is ideal for those who prefer not to walk! The hotel's location is super convenient, just a 1-minute walk from Takayama Station!"

Overall, everything was good, and we had a pleasant stay. However, I would just like to mention the hotel’s occupancy policy. Although the room had two single beds, the booking was only for one adult, and an additional charge was required for the second adult. We respect the hotel’s policy, but we hope the hotel may consider reviewing this in the future. Apart from this, everything else was good, and we enjoyed our stay.

The hotel is very close to JR Takayama Station. After exiting the station, you don't need to cross the road; just turn right towards Tokyu Stay, and you'll find it after passing Ajikura Tengoku. The hotel's decor is very unique. We booked a corner triple room, so the space was incredibly spacious and comfortable. Besides drip coffee and tea bags, the room also provided bottled mineral water. There's an open-air bath on the 9th floor – simply flawless. Before my trip, I read many reviews recommending Hida beef, but to my dismay, I discovered Ajikura Tengoku was closed when I arrived (ugh!). Luckily, I quickly found Maruaki, a famous Hida beef restaurant open year-round. The beef was incredibly rich and fatty – you'll definitely fall in love with Hida beef! I'm already planning to come back next year! 😋

Super conveniently located just next to Takayama Station and right beside the Nohi Bus Terminal, making it an excellent base for getting around especially by public transport to Shirakawa go or Toyama or Nagoya. Unlike many hotels in Japan with compact room sizes, this hotel offers a more spacious setup, complete with a kitchen, cooking utensils, and even a washer-dryer — perfect for longer stays or added comfort. It is also within easy walking distance to Miyagawa Morning Market and Takayama Old Town, with plenty of Hida beef restaurants nearby for a great local dining experience.

It’s a very nice place, 3mins walk from Nohi bus station. Very aesthetic Japanese layout, each room are themed with different Japanese cultures. The staffs are also very friendly and helpful and can’t complaint about the level of service.

The room was quite small but all the amenities is good. there's onsen (which i didnt explore) but you can basically monitor everything from the tv, to check if the laundry is currently used or if the onsen is crowded. theres free drink and food upon arrival. and the front desk can speak english 😁 anddddd theres family mart in front of the hotelllllll. with parking some more and not that far from hida town.

This trip, I stayed at three hotels from the same group consecutively, and it felt just like home. Plus, there's a hot spring within a 5-minute walk. Towels are provided for free, and hotel guests even get a discount, so you can enjoy another soak the next morning – very comfortable! The hotel is incredibly clean with new facilities. Although the location is a bit remote, it's perfect for a road trip, being quite close to Shirakawa-go and Takayama.

The assigned room was not the one I booked. Instead of East Wing with a mountain view, I got assigned to South Wing, not sure if it is a mountain view but definitely not what I expected (I will attach a photo). But generally, I still had a fantastic experience there. The location is great for me because it is near Shinhotaka Ropeway. The open air onsen was beautiful, I liked it a lot, and went every night. The food was fantastic too! I am not well versed with Japanese food culture, but basically it was the traditional course meal (only dinner) you probably will have in a decent Japanese restaurant. I am a vegetarian, the hotel is prepared for my diet every breakfast and dinner. I must say I am really amazed with their food culture and knife skill. Their front desk was helpful with my needs too like a nail cutter, plaster etc.

Wow my friend and I told ourselves that this was gonna be a little treat for us when we booked, knowing how steep the price was. But it was way more enjoyable than I had expected! We had not planned how to travel back from the hotel to Nagoya, so we just asked the front desk when we arrived. And the staff was so kind to share with us the timetable and modes of transportation available. (I conversed with her in Japanese). We went late at night for the onsen, around 11pm, and basically had to whole place to ourselves! There are 2 indoor pools and 3 outdoor pools, and the outdoor pools are must-tries!! Whole body was so relaxed after soaking in the onsen, and it relieved our weariness and sore from hiking. Buffet dinner and breakfast were awesome too! My friend is vegetarian and initially she worried that she might not have much options, but her worry was uncalled for, as they had a wide variety of food, all super delicious. We also loved the view from our room and also from the lobby… perfect onsen hotel experience for us.

The hotel is in an excellent location with great amenities nearby. It's just a bridge away from Miyagawa Morning Market and very close to the old town of Takayama. During my two-day stay, all the other guests I encountered were European, and I was the only Asian person in the entire backpacker room, which was a very unique experience.

Our stay at Ryokan Gizan was a truly memorable experience. This is a traditionally built and decorated Japanese ryokan, with tatami floors, sliding doors, and an authentic atmosphere that makes you feel fully immersed in Japanese culture. It’s definitely a “must-visit” if you’re looking to experience traditional Japanese accommodation — even a short stay of 2–3 nights is enough to make it special. The ryokan is quite old, which actually adds to its authentic charm, though it might feel a bit less comfortable for more demanding guests. That said, it’s very well maintained and everything is clean and thoughtfully arranged. The onsen facilities were excellent — one public bath and four private ones that you can use freely. After long days of exploring, it was a real treat. We highly recommend booking with the traditional dinner included. The location is stunning — surrounded by mountains, rivers, and blossoming trees. It feels peaceful and remote. Just note that amenities like ATMs or grocery stores are limited nearby. However, it’s well connected by bus (just a 3-minute walk from the ryokan), which can take you to Kamikochi or the terminals at Takayama and Hirayu Onsen. Buses run about once an hour, so it’s quite manageable. Overall, a fantastic stay — relaxing, unique, and highly recommended for anyone looking to experience a more traditional and scenic side of Japan.
