While looking at a river at a hotel of the out-of-the-way among the mountains Time of the supreme bliss to soak in an outdoor bath

"Rooms, open-air hot springs, service... almost perfect! I could easily stay here for two or three days alone and not get bored. If you arrange it in advance, the driver will pick you up from the bus station and also drop you off when you leave, so there's absolutely no need to worry about transportation. I'm so glad I chose this hotel; thankfully, I didn't stay in the center of Kurokawa town, which was too crowded and a bit noisy. Why 'almost'? Because the duvet didn't have a proper cover, just a thin sheet separating it, which got messy every time I moved. It didn't feel very hygienic or comfortable. The food was just okay, nothing particularly outstanding, but it was filling. However, the dining environment was very pleasant! Overall, this is a hotel I would highly recommend to friends!"

"It is a traditional family-run ryokan. Although it is a little bit away from the cluster of ryokans of the Kurokawa Onsen, Sato San was kindly enough to receive and transport us at and to the Kurokawa Spa bus stop. I treat the ryokan as a resort. You caould walkst around the town centre or along the trails of the mountains nearby. For the onsen, I particularly liked the one with a pine tree trunk (250 years old but fell down by a typhoon) and the other one with a monolithic granite rock. A kind of nostalgic feeling."

"I finally realized my long-held dream of staying here, having booked the room over half a year in advance. Its location is indeed quite remote, nestled deep in the mountains. Upon arrival, a car picked us up directly from the hot spring bus stop, and the elderly driver was incredibly warm and friendly! The heavy rain on the day of our visit truly enhanced the ambiance. The room itself was incredibly spacious. Surprisingly, even in June and with the rain, it got so cold at night that we needed to turn on the air conditioning. The cuisine was also quite sophisticated. Dinner was exquisite, though the portions were a bit on the small side, leaving me not quite full... The private six-foot outdoor bath was absolutely unforgettable – a definite must-book! If I had to nitpick, for a price tag exceeding 3000 (currency unspecified), I expected the service to be a touch more enthusiastic and friendly. I couldn't shake the feeling of being treated slightly differently (compared to what I observed for local Japanese guests and Westerners). Having stayed at no fewer than 10-20 hot spring ryokans in this price range, I'd say claims of 'superb service' are a bit of an overstatement. Overall, I'd give it an 80/100, and despite the minor points, I still highly recommend it!"

"Pros- spacious villa, quality bedding and large private indoor onsen( see picture 13). We also like the public outdoor onsen in the sister ryokan nearby. There is a little cafe there you can buy drinks and coffee, run by an adorable old couple, very nice and polite. We spent a lot of time there just chilling and listening to the music. Cons- Living room: we were only able to book the western style villa as it’s a little last minute trip. The living room is basic, bland, with sofa, instead or tatami. Our room 512 is next to the car park. Parking lot in front of your main door is not very pleasant. Food : just soso. Nothing extraordinary. See picture. No horse sashimi, the presentation of the steak is really ordinary - disappointing. Perhaps because we had such an amazing meals in the previous ryokan this became a massive letdown. Dinner served in a large public dining room, lack of the privacy and intimacy ther ryokan provide ( we had private dining room in another ryokan 野之花during this trip). I got to see other couples but also feeling like we are being watched. Service- served by young people, not much attentiveness you would expect in traditional ryokan, lack of the warmth and ritual. Reception- 3 star at best. A basic room with uncomfortable chair while you wait to be checked in. We arrived around 2:30pm, and was told that check in can only start at 3pm, and please wait. So we sat at the hard chair and forced to watch the promotional video until 3pm. Conclusion - 3.5 star ryokan, not the most exciting or exclusive villa we have stayed. Maybe it would get better once the trees grow thicker and staff better trained. The sister Ryokan nearby has better feel of environment and feels more established."

And also free beer in the bar. The onsens are very big and clean. Both public and private ones are super nice and clean. The private onsen did not have towels so make sure to bring your own. Rooms are big and clean with the view of the creek or river. Staffs are nice and approachable"

"This hotel is right in the heart of town, with the famous cream puff shop directly outside. The intersection always has people sitting and enjoying sweets. The town is very tourist-friendly, with many benches along the road to rest your feet. There are even dedicated pavilions and foot baths for visitors to relax in. The private onsen on the upper floor is fantastic, with several facing a bamboo forest, which is incredibly relaxing. There's also a standing bath, with steps leading down, which is quite interesting. To get to the hotel's public male and female baths, you cross a small bridge within the hotel. Below the bridge is a stream, and sitting on the bamboo chairs on the bridge offers a unique view. However, the female private onsen requires climbing many steps, which is a bit inconvenient when wearing slippers. Dinner was served in the room, but the disposable chopsticks and wet wipes detracted from the experience."

"This has to be the worst hotel I've stayed at in Japan that costs over 2000 yen a night. Pros: 1. Warm and friendly service. 2. Chinese-speaking staff available. 3. Shuttle service arrangements were very smooth. Cons: 1. Appalling cleanliness. There were cockroaches in the room, a thick layer of dust on the windowsill, and the air conditioning unit was completely filled with spiderwebs. 2. Small, unappetizing food portions with very mediocre ingredients. Even two people with small appetites couldn't get full. 3. The environment was severely lacking. The courtyard was completely neglected and messy. I'd wanted to visit Kurokawa Onsen since 2018, after seeing many heavily filtered vlogs from bloggers. However, this place is genuinely just ordinary. There are countless other onsen towns that are far superior. Honestly, I had no interest in taking any photos, so I'll just share a few pictures of dinner. This was essentially the entire meal, with the main course being an extremely small serving."

"Big and spacious room! Only issue I had is the public bathhouse hahaha got a culture shock when I realised there’s no shower in the room then I realised it’s public 😂 Luckily there wasn’t anyone when I was showering but you could also use the onsen facilities in Yukyonohibiki Yusai (2mins walk) Free cup noodles and water in the room with coffee machines in the recep area Overall a pleasant stay and would recommend if you’re driving (There’s not much in the onsen village imo so better to drive a lil out to eat) but if ure planning to stay in the village only I’d recommend staying in a proper hotel with full facilities within the hotel"

A great location to take a stroll in your yukata! Enjoy multi-course kaiseki meals in a private room, or by the fireplace! Both are popular!

"wonderful ryokan, we had a river view from the window. delicious kaiseki dinner and breakfast. totally recommend! tattoo-friendly onsen, but the showers are only on the first floor. the private outdoor rooftop onsen does not have a shower, so it’s better to shower downstairs first; otherwise, it can be quite chilly to rinse yourself outside using the buckets. there is free parking, but the street itself is very narrow and busy with pedestrians; the ryokan staff can help with parking. the staff warned us about the parking situation in advance and advised leaving the car at a free parking lot in the village center, but there were no spaces available."

Fantastic atmosphere! The hotel is very close to the main attractions in Kurokawa Onsen. The rooms themselves are quite spacious and come with air conditioning (heater). When we realized we didn't have a 100V adapter, the staff quickly found us a charging station with USB output. The hotel has 6 private onsen rooms available on a first-come, first-served basis. There's a separate app on the TV to track their availability. In mid-March, there was enough availability for everyone. But if you don't want to wait, you can always go to the shared men's/women's onsen. I really liked that you're not allowed to wear shoes inside the ryokan (the residential area); you have to leave them until check-out and receive slippers to wear around the premises. Oh, and I almost forgot – there's a lady at the front desk who speaks excellent English, big thanks to her for explaining the main rules!

I stayed for one night in mid-May 2025. This new, traditional-style hotel is designed for privacy and a relaxing holiday. Absolute privacy—even at breakfast, you won't encounter anyone else; your own waiter serves you in a private area. It was raining, so I spent the entire time at the hotel. A stylish, huge room with a large private onsen made you want to stay in it. A huge TV with good sound and YouTube, which is not always available in Japanese hotels. Fast WiFi. The kaiseki breakfast was delicious, so delicious that I could have eaten another one. The hotel is located in a village, well away from the town of Kurokawa and the bus terminal. There is no store in the village; there is nothing at all there. The bus terminal is a 30-minute walk from the hotel, only with one backpack. A local bus runs very infrequently between the hotel and the bus terminal. However, in the morning, after breakfast, a free shuttle runs from the hotel to Kurokawa.

Really nice place to stay in, exclusive experience, you don’t really need to do any onsen hoping if you stay here, one private onsen booking per day which means 2 booking for one night stay and you have got guest only public onsen which alternate each day. They were kind enough to accommodate our vegetarian diet even though they weren’t too happy about that because they had to change their whole menu, so I would suggest checking with them before making the booking. Overall, definitely worth it.

The service was excellent, and the food, both breakfast and dinner, was great. The onsen was comfortable and clean. It's a shame that the massage chair required a coin-operated subscription; normally, hotels of this caliber and price shouldn't charge extra for it.

Is this spa hotel well equipped? The room facilities are very thoughtful and in place, there is a private hot spring in the room, which is very comfortable. The staff is cordial and hospitable. They took the initiative to introduce the surrounding environment, and there was a row of people relaxing and feeding the ducks for free, which was really interesting. The breakfast was delicious and rich. The staff was very considerate and knew that my grandma didn't eat fish, so they replaced her breakfast with fried chicken. I will stay in this hot spring hotel next time.

It’s a good private house. But I’m won’t recommend if weather is cold or raining, or if you’re traveling with young kids. I travelled with my family with two toddlers. The bath and onsen are outdoors, not quite well lit and not well covered. The hot water water pressure is low, and the water is either very hot or very cold. It was a cold, raining and windy that night. It was a horrible experience for us because of the above, and the kids had a lot of trouble taking a bath. And we were worried they might catch a cold. And strangely the door lock of the bath is locked from the outside and not from the inside. Also remember to buy food before entering. We bought ours and cooked our own dinner. Otherwise, it’s a good private house, probably best for adults.

I stayed at Yumerindo Hanadomari from the 15th to the 16th, and I had a double room in the annex Hanadomari. After booking, I emailed my questions, and the hotel staff answered each and every one of them with utmost sincerity. Above all, the staff were incredibly friendly. Everyone at the hotel explained everything in detail and went out of their way to provide convenience for Korean tourists. The food was delicious, and I loved both the private hot spring bath in my Hanadomari room and the open-air hot spring bath. I would definitely return, and I'd love to visit the Aso region of Japan again, if only to stay at this hotel.

We were very satisfied with this hotel. We stayed in a ground-floor room with a garden, and it was especially relaxing to fall asleep each night to the sound of rain. The hotel staff were very polite and offered services in Japanese, English, and Chinese, making communication very convenient. We also booked the hotel’s kaiseki dinner, which cost 7,000 yen per person. It’s recommended for adults, but not for children, as they may not enjoy this type of cuisine. The hotel’s hot spring facilities were excellent, offering private family baths, women-only baths, and mixed baths—providing a variety of options. On the day of check-out, the hotel even arranged a vehicle to take us to the bus station, which was very thoughtful. The only minor drawback was that we could hear footsteps from the room above. Occasionally, when someone walked upstairs, the sliding doors in our room would rattle slightly. That said, overall, it was a very pleasant stay.
