Beside Sujia Lane on Huangxing Road Pedestrian Street, a small red-brick building lies hidden. Before it stands an ancient statue that has gazed for a thousand years; inside, the memories of the Grain Bureau have settled for over half a century. Today, this rare Soviet-style red-brick building in Changsha is writing a brand‑new story for “Atour S.”
A Dwelling Where Eras Meet
Atour S Hotel, Changsha IFS Guojin Center Wuyi Square, is located at No. 36 Sujia Lane in the Baiguoyuan Historical and Cultural Block. Its predecessor was the office building of the Hunan Provincial Grain Bureau, first built in the 1950s. This three‑story red‑brick structure is a typical and rare example of Soviet‑style architecture in Changsha. It was listed as a Municipal Cultural Heritage Site in 2014 and selected as a “20th‑Century Chinese Architectural Heritage Site” in 2023. Nearby historical relics, such as the former printing site of Xiangjiang Review, give the area a rich cultural atmosphere.
The Atour Group defines itself as “creating a sanctuary for body and mind.” Atour S is an upgraded line of Atour hotels – the “S” stands for “Special,” focusing on business travelers who seek quality living and offering premium experiences. The hotel fully preserves the building’s historic character and courtyard layout.
Complete Amenities for the Ideal Business Stay
The hotel offers various room types and facilities including a buffet breakfast (Xiang Zhao), a self‑service laundry (Chu Chen), a gym (Han Chu), the Zhu Ju reading space, and a small meeting room. The Atour S brand emphasizes the coexistence of art and practicality: public areas exude an artistic flair, while room design balances comfort with function, creating a gallery‑like visual experience and warm, home‑like service. “Zhu Ju” features a “flowing library” concept, offering a curated selection of books for guests to enjoy free of charge. “Chu Chen” laundry provides convenient clothing care for business travelers, continuing the Atour brand philosophy of being “humane, warm, and interesting.”
Prime Location for Effortless Travel
Located in the core commercial area of Changsha, the hotel offers outstanding convenience:
3‑minute walk to Huangxing Square Metro Station (Line 1)
5‑minute walk to IFS Guojin Center
5‑minute walk to Wuyi Square, Huangxing Road Pedestrian Street, and Pozijie Street
Approx. 8‑minute drive to Orange Isle, Yuelu Mountain, and other Changsha landmarks
Sujia Lane also preserves a statue of the great Song‑Dynasty writer Su Xun and the legend of “Laoquan Biejing” (a secluded path named after his literary name), creating a delightful contrast with the 1950s Soviet‑style red‑brick building. This quaint, tranquil yet downtown lane allows you to experience Changsha’s old‑city charm while plunging instantly into its modern bustle and convenience.
Here, you will find the historical depth of a century‑old red‑brick building, the distinctive taste of Atour S, and the utmost central convenience of Changsha. Business travel and quality living – both are yours to enjoy.
"Highly recommend Atour S Changsha Wuyi Square (formerly Hunan Provincial Grain Bureau Old Site)! This Soviet-style red-brick historical building from the 1950s, a Chinese 20th-century architectural heritage, perfectly preserves its original stone plaques, five-pointed star gatehouse, retro red walls, and era-specific slogans. It offers a unique historical charm amidst the bustling city, with tranquil and elegant courtyards and a strong cultural atmosphere.
The biggest surprise was that the entire hotel was completely free of the musty smell common in old buildings or any renovation odors. The ventilation and sanitization were impeccable. The guest room furnishings were warm and soft, with thoughtful and meticulous arrangements, making for an exceptionally relaxing and comfortable stay. It completely sheds the impersonal feel of traditional hotels, providing a strong sense of home and belonging.
The service was warm and attentive throughout: Front desk staff, Jiarong, handled check-in efficiently and gently, patiently guiding us on nearby attractions. We highly recommend the in-house photography service, Wei Yu Travel Photography; photographer Xiao Ming was very professional, actively guiding poses and selecting the best angles, and the final photos exceeded our expectations. When checking out and arranging for refunds and luggage storage, Miss Muhuo was meticulous and thoughtful, handling everything perfectly.
From check-in to check-out, the entire experience was top-notch. Staying in a historic old house and enjoying a comfortable and thoughtful travel experience, I left with a fantastic mood. This is definitely my first choice when visiting Changsha!"
