Kunming is located about 1,890 metres above sea level on the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau and locals call Kunming "Chun Cheng", "the City of Eternal Spring". The weather in Kunming is mild with an average temperature around 16°C. In the coldest month, daytime temperatures in Kunming reach about 16°C, while in the warmest month, temperatures in Kunming top out around 25°C.
What Makes Kunming's Weather So Unusual?
Kunming has a subtropical highland climate and four features make it different from almost any other place in China.
Cold, sunny wintwe and warm cloudy rainy summers, instead of freezing cold or extremely hot.
A large difference between day and night temperatures, so mornings can be chilly while afternoons are nice and warm.
Two different parts of the year: dry and clear from November to April, wet and cloudy from June to September.
Around 2,200 hours of sunlight each year which is a lot, for China.
The result is easy to understand: no month is really bad to visit. You don't often face 30°C heat or freezing nights and the main thing to watch for is rain, not temperature.
👍Pro Tip: When planning your visit, consider booking your flights to Kunming early to snag the best deals and keep an eye out for promotions.
