Grand Hyatt Kunming

The location is super convenient, right in the city center. You can directly access the adjacent Plaza 66 from the ground floor or the third floor, which offers various dining and shopping options. We were upgraded to a deluxe room, which was very spacious. Overall, it was a great stay.

The Grand Hyatt Kunming is a five-star hotel that opened last year in Kunming. It was meant to be the newest five-star hotel, but with the opening of the Shangri-La this year, it no longer holds that title. The hotel is located near Dongfeng Square, and the building itself is very tall. If you drive up, you'll see a fountain at the entrance, but it's not a traditional one; instead, it's one of those modern ground-level types where water jets out from various points. Entering through the main door, you're greeted by the hotel's iconic sight: a grand, high arched design. Above it, there's a crossbeam with a jade slab on one side and a sculpture on the other. The entire design is very impressive and makes for a great photo opportunity. Continuing inside, you arrive at the hotel reception, which also serves as the check-in desk. A distinctive feature is the chandelier behind the reception desk; from a distance, it looks like calligraphy brushes hanging on a rack, a thoughtful touch. On the other side, there are two sets of sofas, and behind the set at the far end, there's an interesting decoration that appears to be made from a carpet-like material. Between the reception area and the elevators, there's a hallway. It's clad entirely in dark wood, creating a profound and luxurious feel. At the end, a large marble slab serves as decoration, contributing to the overall sophisticated atmosphere. Taking the elevator up to the room, I noticed that each elevator lobby is adorned with small podocarpus trees, which is a charming and ingenious detail. Today, I'm staying in a junior suite. Upon entering, the first thing you see is a small antechamber. By the window in this area, there's a sofa paired with a round table and an armchair. Welcome fruits and snacks were already laid out on the table; the snacks were fried potato chips and cashews, and the fruits were very fresh. As they are local Yunnan produce, they tasted excellent. Moving into the bedroom, the design is very well-balanced and stable. In the center is a double bed, facing a television. Behind the bed is a floor-to-ceiling glass window, offering views of the adjacent garden and some stone houses. To the side, there's a door that opens into the bathroom. The bathroom features a large washbasin, with a shower on one side and the toilet on the other. The entire space is very generous, making for a comfortable shower experience. Besides the room, I also checked out the hotel's public areas. First, the swimming pool. It's a long, rectangular pool with plenty of natural light streaming in from the side. Interestingly, there are several rooms that connect to both the swimming pool and the spa. There's also a gym. Overall, the public facilities are quite comprehensive. Breakfast is served on the fifth floor in a buffet style, offering a wide variety of food. Generally speaking, apart from the more distant InterContinental, the Grand Hyatt is a very good five-star hotel in Kunming. The newly opened Shangri-La this year has roughly doubled its prices. If you're looking for a newer five-star hotel with better value for money, the Grand Hyatt remains an excellent choice.

This was our second stay at the Grand Hyatt Kunming, and the breakfast was as diverse and delicious as ever 😋. Even with many cooking stations, there was no unpleasant oily smell. Commendable! There was an uncle in the restaurant, probably the manager? He was busy moving around, just like last time, meticulously taking care of every detail. What impressed me most was their fresh fruit juice bar, where guests could mix and match different fruits. They also had a dedicated coffee brewing station, which was especially great for us coffee lovers! It's the best breakfast service we've experienced in any hotel. The 25-meter pool was spacious and bright, though it's a pity there was no hot tub or jacuzzi. The room facilities were good, but an additional vanity would have been more convenient. An iron was provided, but I couldn't find an ironing board. I believe that for the price charged, there's still room for improvement in the details!

The hotel was very welcoming, especially during check-in. Emily, the front desk staff member, was incredibly enthusiastic and maintained a high standard of service throughout the entire process, which was very impressive. I'll definitely choose to stay here again.

I had high hopes since the hotel was newly opened, but only the entrance and reception were beautiful. The pool, gym, and in-house restaurants were all very ordinary, with no particularly stunning areas. I made a reservation at the Japanese restaurant and went, but the food wasn't good. I gave a low rating for customer service because when I asked the concierge to make a reservation or inquired about luggage transportation, I received no clear answers and was told to arrange everything myself. I understand they might not want to take responsibility, but then what's the point of having a concierge? I questioned whether this was acceptable customer service for a Grand Hyatt brand. Even if they couldn't make arrangements or reservations for me, there are many things they *could* do, like providing information or suggesting alternatives. To simply say, 'We can't do it, so look it up and arrange it yourself,' felt like a lack of responsibility towards their job. It was truly disappointing.

The room was very comfortable with a great view, perfect for watching the sunset. The breakfast buffet offered a wide variety of options, including both traditional Western dishes and various local Yunnan delicacies. The hotel's service was exceptional. Our hotel account manager, Isla, was highly professional, enthusiastic, and efficient. She proactively called us before check-in to understand our needs, promptly followed up on our stay experience during our visit, and responded to our requests very quickly. She also provided us with a lot of useful information about Kunming's weather and tourist attractions.

The hardware is great, but the service (software) is terrible. This hotel is incredibly rude. The front desk staff who checked me in didn't say hello, didn't smile, and wouldn't even make eye contact. When I got into the elevator, a staff member immediately leaned against the wall, accidentally pressing several of the disabled access buttons. I politely pointed it out, and he didn't react at all, showed no apology whatsoever, and just turned around and unpressed my 25th floor button! Honestly, this doesn't feel like Kunming, and it certainly doesn't feel like a Grand Hyatt.

My first stay at a Grand Hyatt, and the Kunming location truly impressed me with its service, ambiance, and prime location. Our butler, Isla, would check in daily to see how we rested the previous night and if we needed anything replenished. Fresh fruits were also restocked in our room every day. The breakfast was decent. Personally, I'd rate it above Conrad and InterContinental within China, and on par with Four Seasons.
