Amazing
::))My first visit to Otaru was truly unforgettable, all thanks to my experience at this wonderful hotel! Located just a pleasant 20-minute drive from Otaru Station, the hotel is nestled in a tranquil, private area that feels like stepping into a captivating wonderland. I was delighted to discover a bus stop right across from the hotel, making it effortlessly convenient to explore the surroundings. From the moment we arrived, the staff welcomed us warmly by name, and they were incredibly helpful with our luggage. Taking off our shoes upon entering the hotel created a feeling of comfort and cleanliness that made us feel right at home. After a smooth check-in process, during which they confirmed our breakfast time, the staff graciously guided us through the hotel, sharing helpful information about opening hours for various amenities. Our room was beautifully adorned in traditional Japanese style, complete with an open-air bath. Enjoying this serene experience during the winter was simply magical! We also savored a delectable Kaiseki dinner in our room, which was not only a feast for our taste buds but also left us delightfully satisfied. The onsens were a real highlight, featuring an adjacent sauna. With daily alternating access for women and men every other day, we were able to enjoy both during our stay. Families will find this hotel exceptionally accommodating, thanks to its variety of playrooms and relaxation spaces catering to guests of all ages. Plus, the complimentary refreshments and bar in the lobby until 10 PM added a lovely touch to our experience. Breakfast was a true delight, with a peaceful view of the snow outside the restaurant, enhancing the serene atmosphere. On our departure day, the hotel thoughtfully arranged a shuttle bus to take us to the JR station, making our exit seamless and convenient. Looking back, our only regret is that we stayed just one night—I can't wait to return and immerse myself in a different season's beauty. This hotel is now firmly on my list for future visits, and I’m already looking forward to the next adventure!

GGuest UserWe booked the best room on the top floor and spent 7 nights at this high end and extremely expensive ryokan/hotel. Here are the pros and cons: PROS: The food is amazing in terms of presentation, gastronomy and service. The place is immaculately clean. The views a fantastic! We got comfortable Yukatas and overall the place has a very nice traditional vibe.  CONS: They seem to be completely inapt in hosting people who don’t speak Japanese. No one speaks English at this place. None at all! They write that we can “press 9 and call the reception”, but once you do it – you can’t have any conversation with anyone at all. Even when you get down in person to the reception, no one can really communicate with you, even with Google Translate.  They exhibit zero flexibility. The approach is – it’s our way or the highway. All is extremely polite, but no left, no right! Can we have a laundry service arranged? The answer is “no!”. Can we communicate with you via WhatsApp or email? – No! Can we come later to breakfast? No. Can we have dinner at a later time, since we can’t come earlier just this one day? No! Basically, if you want to sleep a bit later during your vacation – forget it! Either show up at 8 or 8:30 am for breakfast, or go hungry! Can we buy your Yukata? – No! Also, we were asked to indicate every day what time we intend to go out – something that adds pressure, as  on vacation one may want to improvise, rather than plan ahead their outings.  Given that this place charges exuberant prices, the lack of the most basic hospitality features (communication, laundry, customer-focused flexibility) is astounding! We now staying at another Ryokan, 90 minutes away and see that everyone can speak some English and the place is much more focused on the needs of a foreign traveler, as opposed on preserving the holy rigidity of an existent system.

ZZiqianwawaFantastic! The hotel gave us a free upgrade to a super large room with amazing views directly overlooking the sea. The room was huge, very clean, and had three big windows. The location is excellent; if you walk straight out, you'll reach the Otaru Canal. Coming from RJ, you just walk straight ahead until you see the covered pedestrian street on your left, and the hotel is at the end of it.

AAnonymous UserFacilities: There are microwaves and refrigerators in the public area, but please note that the refrigerator is small and cannot hold large items. Hygiene: Clean and tidy. Environment: The small window in the room is surprising, and it feels like an oil painting when you look out. The location is far from Otaru Station/Otaru Canal/Otaru South Station, etc. You need to take a bus to get there. There is a bus stop less than 1 minute away from the hotel. It is relatively close to Tengu Mountain and can be reached on foot. The hotel host provides pick-up and drop-off services to the above-mentioned places during the time period of 16:00-22:00.

JJ. SimonLocation: Around +/-30 mins walk from JR Otaru station and bus interchange. Very steep uphill slope covered in thick snow and slippery icy pavements. Fortunately, kept luggage in the locker in JR Otaru station before heading to accommodation. Every room is housed in an individual container. Ideal place to stay during spring, summer and autumn. Attraction: Great if one is driving as most attractions are quite far from this accommodation. Unless you know which bus stop the sightseeing bus or bus to Mt Tengu Ropeway will stop at, best is to take these buses from the bus interchange at JR Otaru station which is around +/- 30 mins walk from the accommodation.

GGuest UserI wasn’t exactly thrilled with the idea of a shared bathroom but the description of the facilities and furnishings intrigued me. When I checked in at Little Barrel I was immediately enthralled by the uniqueness of the decorations. It was indeed a pleasure to stay here and the numerous photos I took of the place can attest to that. And the shared bathrooms that I was so concerned about? It didn’t turn out to be a problem at all. The common bathrooms are maintained at a very high level of cleanliness and equipped with the latest toilet features. So if like me, you are interested in staying in esoteric places you can give Little Barrel a try!

SScudLimCozy Inn is superb, can easily be reached by bus or by car. Plenty of parking spaces. Room is big and clean. Close to Aeon and Daiso. Walkable to the canal if you are not driving. Check in uses machine and strictly only after 3pm, so do not come early. Overall, I highly recommend!

EEvan 勾勾This hotel is well maintained, located across from the ski resort, guests can enjoy a beautiful view by opening their room windows. The hotel itself is spacious, and the outdoor hot springs are decent. Within a 5-10 minute drive, there is a 24-hour large supermarket available.

CchokyPros: The room was very spacious, the largest I've stayed in Japan, and the bed was comfortable. The room was clean and tidy, and it had a refrigerator. Cons: 1. It's a bit far from the shopping street, and the surroundings are quite empty. Of course, Otaru isn't very big, so you can get anywhere within a 1km walk. 2. The hotel originally stated they offered pickup/drop-off service from the JR station, but upon arrival, they said there was no driver. The explanation felt very perfunctory. 3. There's no designated place to change clothes in the room, not even a screen for privacy. There's also no rack for clothes in the bathroom. This would be extremely awkward and inconvenient unless you're a couple. 4. There are very few power outlets. For three beds, there was only one outlet by the headboard, which was being used by an air purifier. In total, including the one by the sink, there were only three outlets in the entire room. Additionally, the elevator was broken on the day of check-in, which was inconvenient. Housekeeping isn't provided during your stay; you have to proactively request fresh towels or trash bags.

EEng YeowThis apartment offers a practical and comfortable stay, especially for those looking to explore Otaru on foot. We appreciated the basic utensils and cutlery provided, making it easy to prepare simple meals. The thoughtful inclusion of toothbrushes and toothpaste was a nice touch, and the microwave was handy for quick reheats. Comfort is well-addressed with one air-conditioner and a heater, ensuring a pleasant temperature regardless of the weather. The washing machine was a huge convenience, and we had options for drying clothes either on the hanger stand inside the room or on the balcony. The location is a major highlight, being within easy walking distance to both Otaru Canal and Sakaimachi Street. We also found it convenient to have a Lawson and various eateries nearby, though it's a good idea to check their opening hours as they can vary. Important Considerations for Your Stay While the location is excellent, it's important to note that the road leading to the building is steep. This could be particularly challenging if you're driving, and we would not advise driving during winter due to the road conditions. For those with a car, there are two parking areas available. The closer one has three slots, while a slightly further option offers approximately 12 slots. Keep this in mind, especially if you prioritize a closer parking spot.
