For Singaporeans planning a winter getaway, this combination of snow activities and city comforts makes Sapporo an appealing choice.

This guide covers the best ski resorts near Sapporo, transport options, accommodation tips and practical advice to help you plan your winter trip with ease.

Ski Season and Climate Overview

Ski Resorts
  • Ski season: Most ski resorts around Sapporo operate from late November to early April, depending on snowfall and weather conditions. Some resorts, including Sapporo Kokusai and Kiroro, may extend their season into early May.
  • Best time for skiing: Late December to February is usually the prime period for winter sports, with frequent snowfall and excellent powder snow conditions.
  • How to avoid crowds: Consider visiting in mid-January, after the New Year holiday rush, or in early March. These periods may offer a more relaxed skiing experience and better value on flights and city hotels, although prices vary with demand and holiday dates.
  • Temperature and what to wear: Sapporo city temperatures can fall to around -2°C to -5°C during winter, while ski resorts may feel much colder, sometimes dropping below -10°C. Pack thermal layers, waterproof outerwear, gloves and suitable winter footwear to stay warm on the slopes.

Pre-Trip Preparation and Tips

Japan Ski Resorts

For Singaporean travellers heading to Sapporo for their first skiing trip, here are a few things to prepare before setting off:

  • Ski equipment rental: Rental shops in Sapporo city and at ski resorts offer skis, snowboards, ski jackets, ski pants and other essential equipment. However, personal items such as goggles, gloves, face masks and thermal base layers may not be available for rent at every resort, so it’s best to bring your own or check availability in advance.
  • Transport reservations: Shuttle buses to popular ski resorts, including Sapporo Kokusai, may require advance reservations, with seats limited during peak season. Book online a few days to a week ahead where possible, especially during school holidays and the year-end travel period.
  • Chinese-speaking ski instructors: If you prefer lessons in Chinese, check availability at ski schools in Teine, Sapporo Kokusai and other major resorts. Beginner lessons can fill up quickly during winter, so book early and confirm the language offered before paying.
  • Travel insurance: Skiing is considered an adventure or winter sport and may not be covered by every standard travel insurance policy. Before leaving Singapore, check that your policy covers recreational skiing, ski-related accidents, overseas medical expenses and emergency medical evacuation. Also review any exclusions, such as off-piste skiing or certain types of snowboarding

Your Complete Transportation Guide

Sapporo’s transportation network is extensive and well-connected, so getting around is a breeze, whether you take the bus, hop between subway lines, or drive yourself, it’s all incredibly convenient.

  • Important tip (must-read for boarding at Sapporo Station): Due to the Hokkaido Shinkansen extension project, the former "Sapporo Station Front Bus Terminal floor)" has been temporarily closed (construction is expected to continue for more years).
  • The Chuo Bus and regular sightseeing ski line to "Sapporo Kokusai Ski Resort" have been relocated to Sapporo Station North Exit (temporary bus boarding area) for boarding; on the return, drop-offs are around the South Exit. Please arrive 15-20 minutes early to find the stop, and don't head to the old terminal or you'll miss the bus!
  • Hotel ski shuttle: Across Sapporo, many large hotels (like Keio Plaza Hotel, Sapporo Prince Hotel, and major hotels in Susukino) have dedicated or partner ski bus stops right at the front entrance, making it a breeze to set off with your ski bag in tow.

2. JR Rail + Bus Transfer

  • How to Get to Sapporo Teine Ski Resort: Take the Hakodate Main Line from JR Sapporo Station to JR Teine Station, which takes around 10–15 minutes by rapid train. From the station’s South Exit, board the JR Hokkaido Bus (Te 70) to the Teine Olympia or Highland area. The bus ride takes approximately 15–25 minutes.
  • How to Get to KIRORO Resort: One option is to take a JR train to Otaru Chikko Station, then transfer to a resort shuttle bus. The shuttle journey takes around 40–50 minutes and may require advance booking. For a more convenient journey, consider taking a direct ski bus from central Sapporo, if available for your travel date.

3. Renting a Car for Your Road Trip

Major car rental companies in Hokkaido generally provide vehicles fitted with winter tyres during the snowy season. However, driving in winter still requires extra caution.

Roads may develop black ice, a thin, nearly invisible layer of ice that makes the surface extremely slippery. Keep a much greater distance from the vehicle ahead, allow plenty of extra time to brake, and be prepared for sudden drops in visibility during snowstorms.

If you’re not used to driving on snow or icy roads, taking trains and buses is a safer and more comfortable option for getting around Sapporo and its nearby ski resorts..

Essential Skiing Tips for Singaporean Travellers in Sapporo

Skiing in Sapporo

Instead of spending more on accommodation and travelling further to Niseko, consider staying in central Sapporo and visiting nearby ski resorts for day trips.

This gives you more flexibility to enjoy skiing during the day and explore the city's food spots, shopping streets and attractions in the evening. If you're planning to ski at Teine, Sapporo Kokusai or Mt. Moiwa, here are some useful tips to make your trip smoother.

1. Look for Ski Bus and Lift Ticket Packages

  • Why it helps: Booking transport and lift tickets separately can take extra time and may cost more.
  • Tip: Check whether your hotel or ski resort offers a combined ski bus and lift ticket package. Some hotels and tour operators in Sapporo provide transport services to popular ski areas.
  • Recommendation: Before heading to Sapporo Kokusai or Sapporo Teine, compare package prices with individual tickets. Reserve your bus seat in advance, especially during weekends and peak winter periods, and check whether equipment rental is included.

2. Choose a Resort That Matches Your Skiing Style

  • Sapporo Teine: This resort hosted events during the 1972 Winter Olympics and is known for its mountain slopes and views towards Ishikari Bay. You can take a JR train from Sapporo Station to Teine Station, then transfer to a bus. Allow extra time for connections, as the total journey depends on the route and schedule.
  • Sapporo Kokusai: A popular choice for powder snow, this resort is suitable for travellers looking for a fuller mountain skiing experience. It is farther from central Sapporo, so check the bus timetable and travel time before setting off. Depending on snow conditions and the operating calendar, the ski season may extend into spring.
  • Mt. Moiwa Ski Resort: This resort is known for its night skiing and views over Sapporo. Snowboarding is not permitted, making it an option for skiers who prefer a ski-only environment. Check the resort's current operating hours and facilities before visiting.

3. Choose the Right Skis for Powder Snow

  • Tip: If you're an intermediate skier planning to ski on deep powder, ask the rental shop whether wider powder skis are available.
  • Why it matters: Wider skis offer more flotation in soft, deep snow, helping you stay closer to the surface and maintain better control. Standard skis can still work well on groomed runs, so choose equipment based on your ability and the snow conditions rather than renting the widest pair by default.

4. Try Night Skiing for a Different Experience

  • Why go: Night skiing lets you enjoy the slopes after dark and fit a ski session into a winter itinerary that includes daytime sightseeing.
  • Tip: Sapporo Bankei Ski Area is one option to consider because it offers night skiing during the season. Check the latest operating hours, transport arrangements and ticket prices before you go, as these can vary by date.
  • Worth knowing: Night skiing can be a memorable experience for couples and friends, but temperatures may drop further after sunset. Wear suitable winter clothing and make sure you have enough time to return to your accommodation.

5. Dress in Layers and Protect Yourself from the Wind

  • Why it matters: Winter temperatures around Sapporo's ski resorts can feel much colder when wind and snowfall pick up.
  • Tip: Use a three-layer system: a moisture-wicking base layer, a warm middle layer such as fleece, and a waterproof, windproof outer jacket and ski pants.
  • What to bring: Pack insulated gloves, a neck warmer, suitable goggles and warm socks. A helmet is also strongly recommended. Cover exposed skin when it's windy, and take breaks indoors if you start feeling numb or excessively cold.

You can take a bus to Sapporo International Ski Resort in the city. It is conveniently located and has a long history. There are equipment rentals in the resort. There are two charges for clothing, one is a gorgeous version of snow suits, and the other is a regular version. The staff explained carefully. There is a restaurant next to the entrance. If you go to Hokkaido in winter, it is worth a visit😊

Our kids learned to snowboard after just a half-day lesson, all thanks to Mr. Chris South. He took wonderful care of our two boys, ages 9 and 16. As first-timers, they needed a patient teacher, and Chris was exactly that: helpful, professional, and kind, answering every question with a smile. His fluent English instruction was clear and easy to follow. He even took many videos for us to keep. My son was snowboarding almost like a pro by the end of the day! We are so happy he was their coach; we truly got our money's worth. If you're looking for a coach, you can't go wrong with Chris. We deeply appreciate his efforts in making their first snowboarding experience both fun and educational. Everything about today: the coach, the place, the service, the snow, deserves a perfect 10! Thank you, Chris!
