Why JB Is the Perfect Dating Destination for Singapore Couples

Just across the Causeway, Johor Bahru (JB) offers plenty of fun ways for couples to spend quality time together, from making personalised rugs and baking cakes to meeting adorable animals and enjoying a relaxing spa day.

Better still, many activities, meals and spa treatments cost less than comparable experiences in Singapore, leaving you with more room in your budget for an extra dessert or activity.

Whether you're planning your first date, celebrating an anniversary or simply looking for something different to do with your partner, these dating spots in JB offer plenty of inspiration. Here are some creative, romantic and adventurous ideas to make your next couple's outing a little more memorable

Choose the Best Way to Get to JB

There are several ways to travel from Singapore to Johor Bahru, depending on your budget and where you plan to spend the day.

  • Public bus: A budget-friendly choice if you're visiting the city centre or shopping malls near JB Sentral. Do allow extra time for immigration.
  • Train: The KTM Shuttle Tebrau between Woodlands Train Checkpoint and JB Sentral can be convenient for avoiding road traffic. Tickets should be booked in advance, especially for weekends and holidays.
  • Private car: Useful if your date includes places in Mount Austin, Iskandar Puteri or other neighbourhoods that are less convenient to reach by public transport.
  • Cross-border taxi or ride arrangements: Check the permitted pick-up and drop-off locations before booking, as cross-border transport rules differ from ordinary local rides.

Plan Around Immigration Queues

Saturday mornings, Sunday evenings, long weekends and school holidays can be particularly busy. If your date involves a timed workshop or spa appointment, avoid scheduling it too close to your estimated arrival time.

Check traffic conditions before leaving Singapore and allow a buffer for immigration. Booking an early workshop may sound romantic but not if you're both rushing through the checkpoint!

Driving Into Malaysia

If you're driving your own Singapore-registered car, check Malaysia's Vehicle Entry Permit (VEP) requirements and make sure your vehicle's registration and relevant payment arrangements are in order before crossing. Keep your passport, driving licence and vehicle documents accessible.

For a more relaxed date, consider using public transport or a local ride-hailing service once you're in JB, particularly if you're visiting several places within one neighbourhood.

🎨 Creative & DIY Dating Spots in JB

Want a date that feels more personal than going out for dinner? Try a hands-on workshop where you can make something together. You'll get to learn a new skill, laugh at each other's attempts and bring home a little souvenir of your day.

Tufting Nuts — Create a Rug Together

Tufting Nuts

If your partner enjoys creative activities, a tufting workshop is a fun way to try something new together. Located in Mount Austin, Tufting Nuts lets you use a tufting gun to create a custom design, turning colourful yarn into a rug you can display at home.

Choose a design that means something to both of you, whether it's your favourite cartoon characters, matching initials or a playful design inspired by an inside joke. You can also explore different colours and shapes to make your rug unique.

Prices depend on the selected workshop package and rug size. The studio offers different formats, so check the current booking page for the latest options and session duration. Advance booking is recommended, especially for weekend dates.

💌Tips: Make matching designs or create a rug inspired by your favourite shared memory. It may not turn out perfectly, but that's part of the fun!

Good Times DIY Baking Studio — Bake Sweet Memories

Good Times DIY Baking Studio

For couples who love desserts, Good Times DIY Baking Studio offers a chance to become baking partners for the day. Instead of ordering a cake at a cafe, you can make one yourselves and enjoy the process from mixing ingredients to decorating the finished creation.

The studio has beginner-friendly and more challenging recipes, including cupcakes, brownies, cookies and cakes. Prices on its official website start from RM95 for selected easy-level baking activities, RM140 for intermediate options and RM190 for selected advanced options. Prices and available recipes vary.

Don't worry if neither of you is an experienced baker. The step-by-step instructions and on-site assistance make it easier to follow the recipe. You can also visit its Johor Bahru branches at Paradigm Mall or Toppen Shopping Centre, subject to current availability.

💌Tips: Choose a dessert you both enjoy, then decorate it together. You can even turn it into a friendly competition to see whose creation looks better.

Forever Twenty DIY Studio — Decorate Keepsakes Together

Forever Twenty DIY Studio

If you prefer smaller crafts that are easy to bring home, Forever Twenty DIY Studio is worth considering. Its decoden-style craft activities let you personalise everyday items using decorative cream, colourful embellishments and other craft materials.

Depending on the available workshops, you may be able to decorate phone accessories, bracelets, mirrors and keychains. It's a cute option for couples who enjoy handmade gifts and want to create something that feels personal.

The best part is that you don't need to be particularly artistic. Pick your favourite colours, choose the decorations you like and let your creativity take over.

💌Tips: Make a matching pair of keychains or phone accessories. Every time you use them, you'll have a little reminder of your date.

A day trip is enough for quick date, but staying overnight gives you more freedom to explore without worrying about the last bus or evening immigration queues.

The best area to stay depends on the type of date and places you're planning.

Best for First-Time Visitors and City-Centre Dates

Stay around JB Sentral and the city centre if you want convenient access to shopping, restaurants and transport connections. This area is particularly suitable for couples arriving by bus or trains.

Looks for hotels within easy reach of JB Sentral, City Square and nearby dining areas such as Capri by Fraser or Holiday Inn Johor Bahru. You can spend the day exploring the city centre then return to your room before heading out for dinner.

Best for Shopping and Dining

Mid Valley Southkey is a convenient base if your plans include shopping, dining and a luxury cinema date. Staying at St. Giles Southkey can reduce the need for repeated ride-hailing trips, especially if you intend to spend most of your time around the mall.

This area works well for couples who prefer a comfortable, low-effort itinerary with meals, entertainment and shopping close together.

Best for Cafe Hopping and Creative Activities

Mount Austin is worth considering if your ideal date involves DIY workshops, animal cafes, dessert spots and karaoke. The neighbourhood has a wide range of food and leisure options, although you may need local transport to move between studios.

Choose accommodation based on the specific places you want to visit rather than assuming everything in Mount Austin is within walking distance. Consider staying at Midori Concept Hotel or Miico Hotel as there are many attractions near the hotels.

Tips for Booking a Romantic Stay

  • Compare the total price: Check the final amount after taxes and fees, not just the headline nightly rate.
  • Look at the location: A cheaper hotel may cost more overall if you need multiple rides to reach your activities.
  • Check the room details: Review the bed type, room size, facilities and cancellation policy before booking.
  • Plan around peak dates: Weekends, public holidays and school holidays can affect hotel prices and availability.
  • Consider an overnight package: If you're celebrating a special occasion, compare hotel packages that include breakfast or other extras.

Practical Tips for Your JB Date for Singaporeans

B5 Johor Street Market

A little preparation can help you spend less time worrying about logistics and more time enjoying your date.

  1. Bring Malaysian Ringgit: Carry some cash for small stalls and local shops, as not all places accept cards or digital payments.
  2. Use Ride-Hailing Services: Book a Grab to travel between attractions and group nearby activities together to save time and transport costs.
  3. Book Activities in Advance: Reserve popular workshops, spa treatments and animal cafe sessions early, especially on weekends and public holidays.
  4. Pack Comfortably: Bring comfortable shoes, a portable charger, travel documents and an umbrella for JB's hot and rainy weather.
  5. Check the Weather: Plan outdoor activities around the forecast and have an indoor alternative ready in case of rain.
  6. Set a Budget: Decide how much to spend on food, transport and activities so you can enjoy your date without overspending.

Check-in was smooth, and we were given a room at Tower 1. Unfortunately, the air conditioning in the first room was not working properly. Although maintenance came to check, the issue was not resolved. We requested a room change in the middle of the night, but unfortunately, the air conditioning in the second room was still not cold enough. The room was extremely warm, making the stay very uncomfortable and unbearable. Overall, the experience was disappointing. The previous stay was much nicer and comfortable

Amari Hotel Stay Had a pleasant stay at Amari Hotel. The rooms were spacious, the bed was really comfortable, and the breakfast spread was excellent — lots of variety and everything we tried was delicious. The hotel is within walking distance to JBCC Mall, which is very convenient. Just a heads-up that City Square is currently closed for renovation, so that may affect your plans. One downside is the traffic around the hotel lobby area, which can get quite congested due to the ongoing construction. At night, some roads leading back to the hotel are also closed, so you may need to take a different route. Overall, a comfortable stay with great rooms and a very good breakfast. Would definitely consider staying here again once the surrounding construction and road closures are sorted out.

This hotel is super convenient, just a short walk from the Johor Bahru customs checkpoint. Right outside, you'll find tons of local food stalls operating from morning till night, offering plenty of choices. It's also close to an old street with popular eateries and a bus station, making it easy to get around. The room is small but charming and has all the basic amenities. At least 8 out of 10 starts for this experience. Pros: Excellent location, right above the R&F mall. Kitchen is complete with adequate kitchenware. Comfortable stay for a 1-bedroom apartment. Felt very cosy (attached photo). Easy enough to check in and out following whatsapp directions for the mailbox. Customer service was responsive with my questions. Also the price for 1 night was excellent at only about $61 SGD, and this seems to be the cheapest among all 1 bedroom offerings on Trip.com for R&F Princess Cove. Cons: On a minor note, air-conditioner in the living room was a bit loud (some noise) but otherwise worked fine. I did not use the oven in the kitchen but there was a sign saying it was not to be used. The most unfortunate part of the stay was small bugs/cockroaches in the kitchen/toilet area, I otherwise would have given it a 10/10 for my stay there. I don't believe it is a hygiene issue though as the rooms were observed to be clean, not sure where the bugs are coming from but there is spray provided.

Overall resort is acceptable, room is spacious, food is okay, location wise so so, pool is big. The baby pool was quite dirty. Noticed black grime between the tiles. Please pay a bit more attention when cleaning the baby pool, especially since it’s meant for young kids. Room’s shower have leaking. Called the staff, and they fixed immediately with glue. But the smell of the glue make the toilet stink for the whole night. Staffs are helpful and friendly. The indoor playground and breakfast for kids under 6 require an additional charge. We didn’t realize the indoor playground wasn’t free because the ads in the hallway didn’t mention it. We were planning to let the kids play for a while before checking out, but ended up going back to the room with disappointed (and crying 😂) kids. Overall, we had a good experience. The location is great, very convenient for driving to Sutera Mall and nearby areas. It's a quiet hotel nestled in a bustling area. There are also plenty of food options nearby, like R&C, Ah Shui Durian, and Yu Xiao Er. If you don't have a car, there's a large food court downstairs that's open very late; I once saw it still lit up past midnight when I returned to the hotel. Next to the hotel, there's also an indoor badminton court and a McDonald's (inside the petrol station), so it's super convenient overall. The hotel also has pools for both kids and adults, a gym, and a conference room. The biggest advantage of this hotel is the incredible water pressure – showering is a real pleasure. I've stayed here 5 times already and will definitely keep coming back.

Before checking in, I have to send them my ID copy and a deposit to be bank transferred. It is the first time I encountered such requirements in my Trip.com stays, and I do not have a local bank account (as a foreign visitor). This is a bit annoying from my perspective and I told them. Luckily at least they waived the deposit for I stay only one night. Once I got into the room, I was welcomed by a cockroach. Later during stay I had two other cockroaches visiting (or they actually reside there, not sure). I believe there is some pest control work that needs to be done.

When I checked in, the front desk staff told me I had to pay a 10 ringgit tax per night. I was pretty sure I had already paid, so I contacted Trip.com to confirm, and they told me I didn't need to pay it. I sorted it out with the staff and managed to check in. But then, in the early hours of the morning, someone suddenly entered my room without knocking, pulled up the blinds without permission, and started arguing loudly. They saw me in my underwear but didn't seem to care. It was a truly embarrassing and humiliating experience.

The environment is beautiful, Singapore is across the river, the transportation is convenient, there is a seafood restaurant downstairs, the food is good. It costs 12 MYR to take a taxi to JBCENTER.

The hotel room was clean and comfortable. However, the room phone was not functioning properly, which was inconvenient when contacting housekeeping or requesting room service. The breakfast menu was good with a decent variety. It could be further improved by offering different menu selections on different days to provide more variety for guests.

One of the best hotel here in Johor Bahru. Highly recommended. The staffs are friendly and they really help you if you have any concerns. I love the view of the hotel outside and inside the room. The room is very big with bath tub and when you open up the curtains you can experience to view the city of Johod Bahru. I will definitely come back to Grand Paragon Hotel Again if im going to JB. Thank you for the free buffet I really ate alot and the foods ang superb delicious 😊😊😊

First time book this hotel. Need at least 10 mins to reach this place by grab. Waited for sometime to check in. Booked a 2 room suit. Room is clean n neat. Hotel provide shuttle bus service at specific timing to CiQ. For those who don't drive a bit difficult cos there is no shopping mall around the hotel. Hence, night time the place is extremely quiet. The breakfast is ok but I find some of the items not heated enough so is cold. Can be better.

Stayed for 3 nights and overall it was a good experience. The room was clean, spacious, and the aircon worked well. Location is very convenient, near restaurants and transport. Staff were friendly and helpful. Only downside was the lift takes time to wait, it’s good value for money and I would stay here again.”

The outlook of the hotel looks great but the inside the room not so favorable. There was blood stain on bedsheet, and aircon one moment warm, one moment super cold … not sure what to think of it 🥲 The bed, not so comfortable to sleep on and very low level, for elderly not really good for them Room size is small and a little squeeze for 2 persons. The bathroom lights are too dim Breakfast wise, not so fantastic. Would recommend eat out since near by have many eatery options

1. Free but old and dimly lit parking lot. 2. Slow check-in process at the front desk. 3. Strong smell of soap in the hallway. 4. The room was okay, but there was no toothbrush or slippers. There were a lot of hairs and black spots on the bed, and the towels were dirty. I contacted the front desk to change the sheets and towels, and it took 20 minutes for someone to arrive. 5. You have to carry your luggage up the stairs from the parking lot to the front desk. A sign on the stairs says the door closes at 12, so you have to use the main entrance. 6. Very limited breakfast options, and the milk was sweet. Fried eggs cost extra.

Location is less crowed area with free parking and easy access to car. Surrounded by average foods stall and restaurant, while more food choise withing 10 minutes drives. Wall partition is solid and the door shut has sofrclose feature. Recommend to upgrade sot hat it can open positition for easy access instead of manual open the door when moving luggage. Due to small scale, operator are urge to remind customers to be always maintain low volumne when in the hotel area for other guest comfort. Hot & cold water only avialable at the lobby. But guest can cook with electrical kattle. Rooms is clean with normal hotel scents. Overall experiance is good.
