Understanding the Johor map before your trip can help you decide where to stay, which attractions to visit and how much time you need to travel between different areas.
Johor is one of Malaysia's largest states and offers much more than Johor Bahru. From the shopping malls and city attractions of Johor Bahru, to the theme parks of Iskandar Puteri, beaches of Desaru, islands around Mersing, food and heritage in Muar, and nature around Kluang and Tangkak, each part of Johor has a different travel experience.
For Singapore travelers, Johor Bahru is the easiest starting point because it is directly connected to Singapore by the Causeway and Second Link. However, if you have more time, exploring beyond JB can give you a vary different side of Johor.
Johor is located at the southern end of Peninsular Malaysia and is the southernmost state on mainland Malaysia. It borders Pahang to the north, Malacca and Negeri Sembilan to the northwest, Singapore to the south and Indonesia across the surrounding waters.
The state has 10 districts, namely Johor Bahru, Batu Pahat, Kluang, Kota Tinggi, Kulai, Mersing, Muar, Pontian, Segamat and Tangkak.
Tourism Johor promotes each district for different attractions, from marine tourism in Mersing to food and culture in Muar and modern attractions around Johor Bahru and Iskandar Puteri.

Getting around Johor depends heavily on where you are travelling.
Johor Bahru has local bus services, taxis and ride hailing services, while longer trips around the state are generally easier by car or intercity bus. For attractions outside the main cities, having a car can save considerable travel time.
Johor Bahru is also connected to Singapore through the Causeway and Second Link. The RTS Link between Bukit Chagar and Woodlands North is scheduled to begin passenger service by the end of December 2026, providing another cross border transport option when operational.

Prices depend on distance, traffic and demand, so it is better to check the fare in the app before confirming your ride.
A rental car is recommended if you want to explore Johor beyond Johor Bahru.
It is particularly useful for trips to Desaru, Kota Tinggi, Mersing, Muar, Kluang and Tangkak, where attractions can be spread across large areas.
Driving around central Johor Bahru can be slower during busy periods, especially around the Causeway and major shopping areas.
