"There's a cosy feel to this place at night sitting outside on one of the wooden picnic-style benches; hearing the crickets and enjoying the tree-mounted, pillar and other lights. The television in our room was too small to be of any use - seemed to be the size of an average sized laptop screen - and it was wall mounted, so a long way from the bed. On a hill the hotel's only a few minutes walk from great places to eat like Livega and Goodfellas and the slightly further Joe's Beerhouse. You can see blue-necked guinea fowl if you're out early in the morning and walk up the hill towards the brow. Staying with nature, within the hotel compound you'll see skinks and black lizards with orange heads and jerky way of moving their upper bodies. The owners, Jugen and Irmgard are welcoming, and he shares great stories. We were staying with a group and he kindly took us (free of charge) on an evening drive on which we saw giraffes, water bok and warthogs. Jurgen is fair, too. The pool is small and shallow - maybe less than 1m but I managed an enjoyable 20" swim in it so it's not only for cooling off on those baking Windhoek summer days. When we came back having been on a 10 day road trip the staff were at the door to greet us with warm smiles and kind words. That was an unexpected bonus! :) Breakfast offers a decent selection including cereals, Nesquick, bread and spreads and different types of eggs and delicious beef sausages. When I reported an issue with our bathroom door it was fixed very promptly by Michael, their friendly handyman. All in all, happy to have stayed here and when we return to Namibia I'd be happy to Hotel Ulhand again!"

"It all started well with a complimentary glass of sparkling wine and a chocolate and our bags were taken straight to our room . The room was lovely , but no tea & coffee making facilities , no mini bar ( as advertised) or even a fridge . The information stated “ you don’t need adaptors “ but they didn’t cater for UK plugs . We had early evening drinks on the terrace and our waitress was lovely . We had booked dinner in the hotel’s restaurant Leo’s . We were seated and given a huge book of wines & asked which we wanted . At that stage we hadn’t been given a menu and the waiter looked a bit affronted when we asked for one . After choosing our food we chose wine to accompany it . I wanted white and my husband red . We were then told those wines only came by bottle and we were given a very poor option of wines by the glass . Our starter arrived but 45 minutes later still no sign of our main course . There was a table opposite us obviously celebrating a birthday and the staff were spending a lot of time with them . When we pointed out we hadn’t had our main courses we were told by a very rude guy ( not sure if he was the restaurant manager ) that they were very busy and had a party of 20 in the wine cellar … sorry that Is not our problem ! He then said had he known we were in a hurry he would have asked the chef to rush it through ! When the food arrived , mine was ok , but my husbands Oryx was tough and tasteless, very disappointing . We were greeted again at breakfast by very unfriendly and unhelpful staff . No menu but asked “ do you want eggs ?” For a hotel that markets itself as a 5* boutique hotel it is sadly lacking . Would I recommend the hotel to my clients .. unless things greatly improved then the answer would be no !"

"The hotel is clean and in a good location for shopping . The hotel is not a marriot standards hotel . The AC works on and off . The staff is friendly and helpful . The manager unfortunately was very rude and embarrassed her staff in front of us , not good! Also the waitress told us that if we tipped her by signing the bill to our room she would not receive the tip .. so we gave her cash …. The marriot higher ups should be aware of this !"
