Winter Story at Shimogoten. A relaxing and rejuvenating trip at one of the Top Three Hot Springs with Beauty Benefits.
It is located in the countryside of Tanabe but the transportation is relatively convenient. This hotel is a member of the Secret Hot Spring Guardian Association, and the water quality of the hot spring is very good. The waiters were all local elderly people, and my lovely mother-in-law came to talk to me with a translator during dinner. The food is not luxurious, but it is still quite traditional and authentic Japanese home-cooked food.

It was a retro inn, located a little way from the Motoyu hot springs of Ryujin Onsen, and it didn't even have an elevator. 🤗 Even though I couldn't stay alone at Kamigoten or other places, they warmly welcomed me as a solo traveler. 😌💓 The hostess is originally from Sajima, Kamijima Town, Ehime Prefecture, where I live, and she has friends on Iwaki Island, where I also live. Perhaps because it was a weekday, the place was all to myself. 🤗 They prepared a bath and meal just for me, which was such a luxurious and appreciated experience. 😊 Afterwards, I was able to visit the Kumano Sanzan shrines in a pleasant atmosphere. Thank you so much. 🤗
An specialized inn without meals at the secret hot springs of Ryujin Onsen, which are among the 3 most famous hot springs of Japan.

Great location, very close to Kumano Kodo trail. The constrainer is very clean with modern room and furniture, kitchen with everything you will need to stay comfortably. They even provided a washer/dryer combo in the bathroom. I only wish there is an option to have dinner in the near by restaurants, instead of cooking. Since we were tired after all day hiking. It’s great to have the option to fix your own breakfast and get an early start for the hike.
Dinner on the day of arrival, as well as breakfast and a boxed lunch the following morning, are included in the price.

Very good homestay, the landlord is friendly and friendly, the geographical environment is very good, the room is large, clean and hygienic. Every meal is delicious, every detail reveals the landlord’s intentions, and I will go again if I have a chance in the future.

GGuest UserMy husband and I stayed here after a very long and wet day of hiking on the Kumano Kodo. It was a perfect place to land, rest and recover. The room is small, but the bed was one of the most comfortable of our whole trip. Our bodies also very much appreciated the onsen tubs, which both of us had to ourselves (separate men and women’s). The meal was definitely one of the very vest that we had during our entire trip in Japan, and the hostess even did emergency laundry so that we would have some dry clothes for the next day. We are very grateful to both of them for such an exceptional stay.
Facilities: It has breakfast, which is especially important for those hiking the Kumano Kodo. The earliest bus to Kumano Kodokan, the closest stop to the hotel, departs at 6:47 AM. Breakfast starts at 6:30 AM, so you can leave right after eating without any delay. Cleanliness: Clean and good! The shower facilities are clearly labeled with different types. Environment: The hotel rooms offer breathtaking views, especially while waiting for the elevator. It perfectly captures the feeling of framing a view, a style often associated with both Chinese and Japanese culture. Service: Excellent! Seriously, as you can see from the many pictures I've posted, it's truly exceptional. Coffee and tea are available on the first floor. I was so lucky to choose this hotel for my Kumano Kodo hike; it's close to a FamilyMart, across the railway is a Lawson, and next to Kiitanabe Station is a 7-Eleven.
The staffs were very friendly, I left my luggage before check in, they put it into the room in advance!! The room was clean, amenities are fairly new, seems like a new hotel in this area!
Large room with a great view of sea, clean and cozy. I was arriving late which passed the check-in hours due to flight delay. My sim card cannot make phone calls in Japan and I was afraid of not being able to check in. Fortunately, the front-desk gentleman was waited for us until midnight and helped us check in. And he guided us to find the vending machine to find the food even not speaking English. It’s a very positive experience to live here.
TTessTrip wouldn’t let me modify my booking to combine both days, but the manager kept my bookings of two days without making me check out and check back in. Very convenient
I stayed 2 nights here while visiting the sights nearby. The 2 older brothers who run this place are very nice. One speaks good English. The food prepared is delicious and has a lovely presentation. It is a lot of food at each meal. My only criticism is that it is an older establishment and could use a little refurbishing. The bath itself is pretty grotty looking. But, you can walk across the street and use the bath facilities of their sister establishment. A lot nicer and includes an outdoor bathing place called a “rotemburo” in Japanese. There are several public baths very close by which you can use for a fee.
