Fantastic atmosphere! The hotel is very close to the main attractions in Kurokawa Onsen. The rooms themselves are quite spacious and come with air conditioning (heater). When we realized we didn't have a 100V adapter, the staff quickly found us a charging station with USB output. The hotel has 6 private onsen rooms available on a first-come, first-served basis. There's a separate app on the TV to track their availability. In mid-March, there was enough availability for everyone. But if you don't want to wait, you can always go to the shared men's/women's onsen. I really liked that you're not allowed to wear shoes inside the ryokan (the residential area); you have to leave them until check-out and receive slippers to wear around the premises. Oh, and I almost forgot – there's a lady at the front desk who speaks excellent English, big thanks to her for explaining the main rules!

Hosh
This place is simply gorgeous. The hotel is beautifully designed to give a real zen feeling. The room was spacious enough for a family, the bed was plush (they also had tatami for those interested) and they even offered Kose skincare products in the room.
It had big sliding doors that offered its own Japanese garden and quality tea set to brew your own tea in the room.
The breakfast was simple but wholesome (not a single fried food in sight) and offering fresh ingredients.
The only drawbacks for me was 1) there were no shower in the room, so you had to use the public bathing area and 2) this ryokan is a fair bit away from Kurokawa Onsen so it is an inconvenient if you’re looking to do some onsen-hopping. Having your own car would be ideal.
If you have the time, I would highly recommend staying at the Hanashoan to experience some relaxing time.

The resort location is accessible actually by bus from tateno 立野 station and the last bus is in the evening you may check the timetable online. We did not drive and leaving the accommodation is less convenient because all taxis were booked out but the staff was very friendly as to driving us to the nearby train station to continue our journey to Aso Volcano.
Service was good. The private onzen was amazing and we were able to use it for one hour. The public bath was good too but the amenities they provided inside were not as enough, eg they don't have comb for ladies and make up removing pads. Other than that, cleanliness was amazing and staff were friendly, rooms had amazing Mountain View's.

e lianA round trip from Tenjin by bus costs 8000 yen and takes three hours! Remember to book your tickets in advance as there aren't many services. The old street in Kurokawa Onsen is very quaint and full of character! Most of the onsen ryokans are built along the creek. The ryokans are simple and clean! In the open-air onsen, you can listen to the gentle flow of the stream and feel that sense of tranquility. In the evening, during the illumination season, walking around in a yukata and geta (wooden clogs) is truly delightful! The kaiseki dinner featured exquisite and unique dishes, including local horse meat and wagyu beef! It was very filling, even for a woman! Please note that the restaurant intentionally doesn't have Wi-Fi; the owner hopes guests can quietly enjoy their meal without disturbance! I absolutely applaud this! The ryokan also offers a shuttle service to Kurokawa Onsen Station, which is a 5-minute drive away. Next time, I plan to stay in Kurokawa Onsen for two days to fully enjoy the peace and quiet!

Chuck ChuangI love the interior of this resort. The staff members are really friendly and helpful. I had little knowledge in selecting local onsen resort, so my initial expectation was not high. Much to my surprise, I love everything this hotel has had. Facility wise everything looks brand new. The room is spacious and comfy. The public bath and indoor onsen are big and clean.
As for the meals, the presentations were good and they were delicious. I have no complaint about it. Keep up with the good work. Look forward to staying there again.

Guest UserImpeccable Service
From the moment we arrived, the hospitality at Takenokura Sansou was exceptional. The receptionist came out to the car park to welcome us personally and escorted us to the reception office. He and his colleague then helped unload our luggage and thoughtfully delivered everything to our room.
The warmth extended well beyond the front desk. As we walked through the dining hall en route to our room, even the chef greeted us with a smile, which immediately made us feel genuinely welcomed.
The staff took the time to explain all the room amenities in detail, including how to adjust the temperature of the private outdoor onsen. At the dining hall, the service team was consistently friendly and approachable, despite my limited Japanese. They served us with patience and sincerity—even when my son happily requested four servings of their heavenly dinner rolls.
Upon checkout, the team came out again to bid us farewell. This was, without question, the best service we experienced throughout our 18-day journey across Kyushu.
Facilities
While some aspects of the room décor and appliances are dated, everything was immaculately clean. As someone particularly fussy about bedding, I can confidently say that Takenokura Sansou offers the best futon I have experienced since I began traveling to Japan in 1999. The quilt was fluffy and soft, while the futon was firm yet incredibly comfortable. I honestly wanted to stay longer just for the sleep.
The private outdoor onsen was the highlight of our stay. The small garden was beautifully arranged, creating a serene and intimate atmosphere. The water temperature could be easily adjusted, and soaking while gazing up at the sky was pure enjoyment.
The room layout was clearly well thought out, with the shower located just before the outdoor onsen and a door to keep out the cold—allowing you to warm up comfortably before stepping outside into the winter air. A small heater near the porch area by the toilet would be a welcome addition to make late-night visits more comfortable, but this is a very minor suggestion.
Dining
This was probably the best dinner we had during our time in Kyushu. Takenokura Sansou surprised us with a beautifully executed fusion-style, course-by-course kaiseki meal. Combined with cocktails and warm interactions with the charming and friendly oba-chan service staff, the entire dining experience embodied what I love most about Japan: excellent food, heartfelt service, and meticulous attention to detail.
One moment stood out in particular. When my son asked—in English—whether he could have a fourth serving of the dinner roll, the chef unexpectedly emerged from the open kitchen and personally served him a freshly toasted roll with soft butter. We were genuinely delighted and deeply touched by this thoughtful gesture.
Conclusion
Everything about our stay at Takenokura Sansou was exceptional. My only regret is booking just one night. I will most certainly return if I visit the Mount Aso area again.
Well done, Takenokura Sansou—you truly deserve this praise.

Is this spa hotel well equipped? The room facilities are very thoughtful and in place, there is a private hot spring in the room, which is very comfortable. The staff is cordial and hospitable. They took the initiative to introduce the surrounding environment, and there was a row of people relaxing and feeding the ducks for free, which was really interesting. The breakfast was delicious and rich. The staff was very considerate and knew that my grandma didn't eat fish, so they replaced her breakfast with fried chicken. I will stay in this hot spring hotel next time.

It’s a good private house.
But I’m won’t recommend if weather is cold or raining, or if you’re traveling with young kids.
I travelled with my family with two toddlers.
The bath and onsen are outdoors, not quite well lit and not well covered.
The hot water water pressure is low, and the water is either very hot or very cold.
It was a cold, raining and windy that night.
It was a horrible experience for us because of the above, and the kids had a lot of trouble taking a bath. And we were worried they might catch a cold.
And strangely the door lock of the bath is locked from the outside and not from the inside.
Also remember to buy food before entering.
We bought ours and cooked our own dinner.
Otherwise, it’s a good private house, probably best for adults.

Guest UserFrom entering the parking lot everything is taken care of, the rooms are enormous, the size of and amenities of a decently sized appartment along with a large kitchen and finally a private onsen fit for two people right next to the beautiful Kurokawa onsen river, aswell as a small waterfall creating an absolutely dreamy experience. The Ryokan is a about a five minutes walk outside the city center which is absolutely no problem as you have everything you need there.
The gentleman in the reception speaks decent English so even with no japanese knowledge you should be fine
They only seem to have four rooms, we got lucky and booked two days ahead, but most likely won't be that lucky.
Absolutely would go again, great experience

My luggage was too heavy, so I asked the hotel shuttle to take me to the station. The Chinese-speaking woman at the front desk was very unhelpful. She kept saying it was very close and I could walk, and then that there was no driver. She made me wait, only to tell me again that it was too close and they wouldn't take me. Haha, so I was dragging two suitcases out the door myself when a Japanese staff member ran out and said they could take me after all. Really left a bad impression, especially that Chinese-speaking woman at the front desk. Avoid this place.
