Unique Cultural & Heritage Experiences in JB

Marvel at Malaysia's Only Glass Temple — Arulmigu Sri Rajakaliamman

Arulmigu Sri Rajakaliamman Glass Temple

If you want to visit somewhere genuinely different, start with Arulmigu Sri Rajakaliamman Glass Temple. This Hindu Temple is famous for its glittering interior and exterior decorations, featuring hundreds of thousands of pieces of coloured glass that reflect light beautifully.

Originally established a simple shrine in 1922, the temple transformed into the striking glass-covered landmark visitors see today. Inside, you can admire intricate religious artwork, colourful mosaics, and elaborate decorations that make space feel almost like a giant jewellery box.

Travel tips:

  • Dress respectfully and follow the temple's rules on footwear and photography.
  • Check visiting hours before setting off, especially during religious ceremonies.
  • Allow around 30 to 45 minutes to explore, depending on visitor access.

Wander Tan Hiok Nee Heritage Street for Street Art and Kopitiam Culture

Jalan Tan Hiok Nee

It is an especially enjoyable stop for café hopping and photography. You can admire the architecture, browse small shops and take a break at a traditional kopitiam before continuing your walk.

Do not leave without visiting Hiap Joo Bakery, a local favourite known for its banana cake and traditional baking methods.

Things to do along the street:

  • Photograph the heritage shophouses and street art.
  • Try local coffee and toast at a traditional kopitiam.
  • Browse independent shops and nearby heritage lanes.
  • Sample freshly baked banana cake, subject to availability.

Unique Outdoor and Nature Adventures Near JB

See a Living Light Show — Firefly River Cruise at Kota Tinggi

Fireflies River Kota Tinggi

For a magical evening away from the city, consider a firefly river cruise in Kota Tinggi. As your boats move along the mangrove-lined river after dark, you may spot fireflies flashing among the trees like tiny fairy lights.

It is a lovely change of pace from shopping and cafe hopping, especially if you are travelling with your partner or looking for a relaxing activity with family.

What to know before going:

  • Book a guided river cruise and confirm the departure point in advance.
  • Visit after sunset, when fireflies are generally easier to spot.
  • Avoid shining bright lights at the trees and keep noise to a minimum.
  • Sightings depend on weather, river conditions and the season, so they cannot be guaranteed.

Explore Mangroves on a River Cruise at Tanjung Belungkor

Tanjung Belungkor

Want to discover a quieter side of Johor? Look into guided mangrove river cruises around Tanjung Belungkor. Depending on the operator and itinerary, these trips can take you past coastal villages, mangrove habitats and local fishing areas.

Some eco-tourism experiences in the wider region focus on marine life, including horseshoe crabs, which are fascinating creatures that have existed for hundreds of millions of years. However, sightings depend on the location, season and conditions, so check what the tour actually includes before booking.

This experience is best suited to travellers who enjoy nature, photography and learning about local coastal communities.

Before you book:

  • Confirm the cruise duration, meeting point and what is included.
  • Ask whether seafood lunch is provided and whether dietary requests can be accommodated.
  • Bring sunscreen, insect repellent and drinking water.
  • Choose an established operator that follows responsible wildlife-viewing practices.

Hike to a Waterfall at Gunung Pulai Recreational Forest

Gunung Pulai Recreation Forest

If you are tired of malls and crowded cafes, swap the city streets for the greenery of Gunung Pulai. Located around 40 km from Johor Bahru, this forest area offers a refreshing outdoor escape with forest scenery, recreational trails and attractions at designated sites.

You can enjoy a short nature outing or plan a more active day, depending on the trail and recreation area you choose.

A simple plan for your visit:

  1. Arrive early to enjoy cooler temperatures.
  2. Explore an open recreational trail or designated waterfall area.
  3. Take a break for a picnic where permitted.
  4. Leave the forest clean and follow posted safety instructions.

Check the latest access arrangements before leaving Singapore. Forest access and waterfall conditions can change, and swimming should be avoided during heavy rain or when warnings are posted.

Crack the Code at JB's Most Immersive Escape Rooms

Lost In Jb The Haunted House

An escape room is a fun way to challenge your friends without spending the entire day outdoors. Work together to uncover clues, solve puzzles and complete a themed mission before the clock runs out.

JB has an offered escape-room experiences in and around its shopping districts including venues promoted under the Lost in JB name. Check current operations and available games before making a special trip as venues and themes can change.

This activity is suitable for:

  • Groups of friends who enjoy puzzles and mystery games.
  • Couples looking for an interactive date.
  • Families with older children, depending on the room's age restrictions.
  • Rainy afternoons when outdoor plans are less appealing.
🚨Tip: Choose a difficulty level that suits everyone in your group. A room that is too challenging can be frustrating for first-timers, while an easier one is ideal for enjoying the experience together.

Sing Your Heart Out at a JB KTV Lounge

KTV JB

Karaoke is a classic group activity, but doing it during a JB getaway adds a little holiday fun. Private rooms let you sing with friends without worrying about the rest of the venue, and you can make an evening of it with dinner and late-night snacks.

Venues such as Superstar KTV and karaoke facilities associated with RUD Karting Medini are options to investigate, but check their current operating status, room availability and booking policies first.

Tips for a smoother KTV night:

  • Compare room rates by the hour and check whether service charges apply.
  • Confirm whether food and drinks are included or charged separately.
  • Book ahead for Friday and Saturday evenings.
  • Arrange your return transport before the night gets too late.

If you are crossing the Causeway for a night out, remember to factor in immigration queues and the operating hours of your chosen transport.

Unique Food Experiences in JB You Can't Get in Singapore

Taste History at Hiap Joo Bakery

Hiap Joo Bakery

A trip to JB is not complete without trying its local food, and Hiap Joo Bakery is one of the most memorable stops for anyone who enjoys traditional baking.

Located along Jalan Tan Hiok Nee, this long-established bakery is famous for its banana cake and buns made using traditional wood-fired ovens. The old-school baking method gives its products a distinctive flavour and makes the bakery feel very different from a modern café.

What to try:

  • Banana cake: Soft, fragrant and ideal for sharing.
  • Freshly baked buns: A good alternative if you prefer something less sweet.
  • Takeaway treats: Pick up a box for your family or colleagues back in Singapore.

Arrive early if you have a particular item in mind, as popular bakes can sell out. Opening hours and availability may vary.

Where to stay nearby: DoubleTree by Hilton Johor Bahru or Capri by Fraser Johor Bahru is a convenient option if you want to explore the heritage district and other central attractions.

Try Chongqing-Style Skewer Hotpot at Ba Shu Spring, Eco Palladium

Chongqing Skewer Hotpot at Ba Shu Spring

If your idea of a perfect JB getaway involves eating with friends, add Chongqing-style skewer hotpot to your list. Instead of ordering everything in the usual steamboat format, ingredients are served on skewers and cooked in a bubbling pot of broth.

Ba Shu Spring at Eco Palladium is one option to look into if you want to try this style of hotpot. The lively dining atmosphere makes it suitable for groups who enjoy sharing food and trying different flavours.

How to enjoy the experience:

  1. Choose your preferred broth, taking the spice level into account.
  2. Pick a variety of meat, vegetables and other skewered ingredients.
  3. Cook the ingredients according to the restaurant's instructions.
  4. Share different skewers with your group so everyone can try more items.

Eat Like a Local at JB's Old-School Hawker Centres

Sometimes, the most unique experience is not an expensive attraction but a meal at a local food stall. JB's traditional eateries offer a taste of everyday Johor life, with familiar Malaysian favourites alongside regional specialities.

Here are three dishes with trying:

Local dish

What to expect

Mee rebus Johor

Noodles served with a thick, savoury-sweet gravy, often made with sweet potato

Lontong

Rice cakes served with vegetable curry or coconut-based gravy

Otak-otak

Spiced fish paste wrapped in leaves and grilled, commonly associated with Johor's coastal food culture

Craft Beer and Comfort Food at The Brew House, Eco Palladium

The Brew House, Eco Palladium

For travellers who prefer a relaxed dinner and drinks, The Brew House at Eco Palladium is worth considering. It offers a casual restaurant-and-bar setting for catching up with friends over comfort food and drinks.

Rather than treating it as a dedicated craft brewery, check the current menu if you are specifically looking for craft beer or seasonal brews. Beer selections and prices can vary by outlet and promotion.

This is a good option for a laid-back evening after exploring Mount Austin or other parts of JB.

Before you go:

  • Check the latest menu and drink selection.
  • Confirm the total bill, including service charges and taxes.
  • Arrange a designated driver or e-hailing ride if you plan to drink.

Here are four ideas for a date that feels a little different:

Experience

Why couples will enjoy it

Best time

Explore Tan Hiok Nee Heritage Street or karaoke

Take photos, browse little shops, sing together and share local snacks

Join a firefly river cruise

Enjoy a peaceful nature experience after dark

Evening

Try an escape room together

Test your teamwork and see who solves the clues first

Afternoon or evening

Book a hotel stay with a pool

Slow down with a swim, a relaxed meal and time together

Weekend

For a more romantic weekend, consider this simple itinerary:

  1. Morning: Explore the heritage street and stop for banana cake at Hiap Joo Bakery.
  2. Afternoon: Check into your hotel, enjoy the facilities or visit a nearby café.
  3. Evening: Head out for dinner, followed by karaoke or a firefly cruise if you have arranged transport.
  4. Next morning: Enjoy breakfast before shopping or exploring another part of Johor.

Unique Day Trip Experiences Beyond JB City Centre

If you have already explored central JB several times, use your next weekend to discover more of Johor. These destinations take more planning and generally better suited to travellers with a car or pre-arranged driver.

Visit the Southernmost Tip of Continental Asia — Tanjung Piai National Park

Tanjung Piai National Park

For a trip that combines photography and nature, head to Tanjung Piai National Park in Pontian. The park is widely known as the southernmost tip of mainland Asia and is part of a Ramsar-listed wetland area of international importance.

Walk-along the designated broadwalks through mangrove habitats and look out for coastal wildlife and birds.

What to do here:

  • Take a photograph at the geographical landmark.
  • Explore the mangrove boardwalks.
  • Look out for birds and other wildlife without disturbing them.
  • Learn about the importance of mangrove ecosystems.

Allow extra time for the drive from JB, and check the park's current opening hours and facilities before setting off.

Explore a Pineapple Paradise at Nictar Pineapple Park, Pekan Nanas

NICTAR Pekan Nanas

Pekan Nanas whose name translates to Pineapple Town, offers a different side of Johor's agricultural heritage. Nictar Pineapple Park is a destination to investigate if you wan to learn about pineapple cultivation and enjoy a farm-focused outing.

Depending on the current visitor programme, you may be able to see pineapple varieties, explore parts of the plantation and sample pineapple products. Confirm whether guided tours or tasting sessions are available before travelling, as not every activity is necessarily offered n a walk-in basis.

This is good choice for families, couples and anyone who enjoys visiting places beyond the usual city attractions.

Travel tips:

  • Check the latest opening hours and whether advance booking is required.
  • Wear comfortable shoes and sun protection.
  • Bring drinking water, particularly on hot afternoons.
  • Ask before entering growing areas or picking any produce.

Go Off-Road on an ATV Fruit Orchard Tour in Kota Tinggi

Desaru Fruit Farm

For a more active outing, consider an ATV ride through a tropical orchard or countryside trail in the Kota Tinggi area. Riding across uneven paths and through lush surroundings offers a very different experience from sightseeing in central JB.

Some farm-based packages may include additional activities such as animal feeding or fresh juice tasting, but these inclusions vary by operator. Confirm the itinerary before booking rather than assuming everything is part of one package.

Before your ride:

  • Check the minimum age, height and other participation requirements.
  • Wear suitable clothing and closed-toe shoes.
  • Follow the guide's instructions and wear the provided safety equipment.
  • Confirm the route difficulty and whether a beginner-friendly option is available.

Practical Travel Tips for Your JB Trip from Singapore

Bus JB

A little planning can make a big difference, especially if you want to visit several attractions outside the city centre.

How to Get from Singapore to JB

There are several ways to cross the border depending on your budget starting point and itinerary.

Transport option

Best for

What to consider

Cross-border bus

Budget-conscious travellers

Affordable, but journey times depend heavily on traffic and immigration queues

Cross-border taxi & Grab

Travellers who want don't want to drive

Book ahead one day before and check departure arrangements

Private car or taxi

Families and groups

Convenient, but border queues can still cause delays

Self-drive

Multi-stop trips around Johor

Useful for reaching nature attractions, but check parking, insurance and cross-border driving requirements

For attractions in central JB, public transport and e-hailing may be sufficient. For destinations such as Tanjung Piai, Tanjung Belungkor or an orchard in Kota Tinggi, a car or pre-arranged transport is generally more practical.

Payment Tips

Malaysia uses the Malaysian Ringgit (MYR). Although some shopping malls and restaurants accept cards or cashless payments, smaller food stalls and rural attractions may prefer cash.

  • Compare your bank's foreign transaction fees before using a card.
  • Keep some ringgit for hawker stalls, parking and smaller purchases.
  • Check the exchange rate before changing money.
  • Confirm whether an attraction accepts card payments or requires advance booking.

Best Time to Visit JB

JB is a year-round destination but the best time for your itinerary depends on the activities you have planned.

  • Weekday mornings: Useful for exploring heritage streets and avoiding some weekend crowds.
  • Weekends and public holidays: Livelier, but expect heavier Causeway traffic and busier shopping areas.
  • Evenings: Ideal for dining, karaoke and firefly cruises.
  • Dryer periods: Generally more convenient for outdoor activities, although tropical rain can occur throughout the year.

First time staying in this room. Wanted to check in at 11.30am. Bt room is not ready until 12.30pm, thankfully. Truly enjoy the peace and quiet on the 27th floor. WiFi connection is strong too. Didn't take the breakfast option this time round. Husband managed to take the opportunity to go to the swimming. Its quite full of ppl on the saturday. But managed to get basic swimming done. Except I gt smthg to complain the fridge is not cold and the tv has 1 black line across the middle of the screen. If given option. I will probably pick the same type of room again.👍

Our whole family loves staying at this hotel. We were originally planning to book a serviced apartment this time, but our child really loves AMARI, so we ended up choosing it again. It turns out our choice was right, and we're as satisfied as ever. The only drawback was that one of the three elevators was out of order, so we had to wait a long time to go up and down. 😂

The room was really fantastic—very spacious with a well-designed layout, and the bed was super comfortable with just the right firmness. I must give a special shout-out to the front desk service; they tried their best to accommodate all our requests 👍 and had a wonderful attitude. The breakfast had a decent variety and plenty of options. There weren't many Chinese dishes, but the Western selection was extensive and more than enough! The Thai milk tea was delicious, and the egg station was located just outside the restaurant, offering omelets, sunny-side-up eggs, tea eggs, and soft-boiled eggs 😊, alongside congee and noodles. As for the location, you need to take a taxi to nearby malls, but it's very convenient—just a 5-10 minute ride, and fares in Malaysia are quite cheap. I would definitely stay here again next time!

We booked a stay at Fraser Place Puteri Harbour for 3 people to celebrate my wife’s birthday and opted to pay extra for a room with a ”Sea View.” We also reached out beforehand to ask for a small birthday surprise for her. Unfortunately, the ”sea view” was a major letdown. Instead of an open, pleasant coastal view, it was mostly looking out over surrounding developments and construction with very little actual water in sight—definitely not what you hope for when booking a special occasion room. On a positive note, I do want to give credit to the hotel staff for their service and effort. They did prepare a birthday cake for my wife as requested. While it wasn't set up in the room prior to our arrival as hoped—it showed up in our fridge on the second day after we returned from our day out—we still really appreciate that they remembered and made the gesture.

Location was amazing! Host was responsive and very helpful:) There was a strong smell of smoke, probably by the previous occupant, and a big pail of water was left in the toilet to shower with cause the shower head not working but we eventually used the rain shower cause that was working so the host managed to engage housekeeping to spray the apartment and to remove the pail:) Though, this trip wasn’t as pleasant as before.. the bidet leaking badly, ventilation fan in toilet was super noisy, water tank for the toilet bowl was also very loud and no table clothes to use to wipe down the tables after use.. these were the negatives but overall, with the host this helpful and responsive, I will definitely stay again cause they’ve been very kind to manage our needs:)

Overall, the hotel is definitely showing its age 😂 Some parts could really use a refresh — the elevators were a little creaky, some of the lift flooring was already coming apart, and we did notice some mould in the bathroom. The shower could also be improved. The water pressure was quite weak, and even with the heater on, the water was basically room temperature at best. There was also some kind of automatic spraying system in the room that was surprisingly loud whenever it went off, although we eventually got used to it. Our room didn’t have the nicest view either, unfortunately. That being said, for an overnight stay, it was still perfectly livable and did the job. The location was convenient, and the staff were nice and pleasant throughout our stay. The saving grace was honestly the breakfast! 😂 There was a teh tarik cart that came around with its own background music, which was SUCH a vibe. There was also someone walking around with a tray of French toast serving guests, and those little touches made the whole breakfast experience unexpectedly fun and memorable. Overall, I wouldn’t expect anything luxurious as the property is clearly on the older side and could use some renovation, but it’s convenient and perfectly okay for a short overnight stay. The friendly staff and breakfast experience definitely helped make the stay much better!

Great stay at Z Hotel – Highly recommended The Good: • Smooth Process: Seamless check-in and a very fast refund of the 100 RM deposit at check-out. • Spacious Room (15th Floor): Located at the end of the hall with a great view of the SG-bound traffic jam. Comes with a combined pantry/open wardrobe space, a dressing table with a mirror, and a small resting table. • Bathroom: The sink basin area is nice and wide. • Great Location & Parking: Walking distance to many eating places. Includes a drop-off point and a car lift leading to 3 floors of secure parking (at least 9 lots per level). • Extra Facilities: Equipped with a gym and a ballroom. Things to Note: • The aircon takes quite a while to cool the room down. There is a ceiling fan, but it had no remote control (likely available upon request). • The shower water pressure is on the slower side, though still acceptable.

The hotel room was clean and comfortable. However, the room phone was not functioning properly, which was inconvenient when contacting housekeeping or requesting room service. The breakfast menu was good with a decent variety. It could be further improved by offering different menu selections on different days to provide more variety for guests.

This was my second time staying at New York Hotel. This time, I stayed in a Family Room. We originally had three people, and after added an extra bed. The price was still quite reasonable, and breakfast was included, which was a good value. The breakfast was one of the highlights of my stay. There were many choices, including local Malaysian favourites such as roti prata, nasi lemak, porridge, and more. I really enjoyed having so many different options. My favourite part of the hotel is definitely the indoor swimming pool. The hotel also has a gym and jacuzzi, which are great facilities for relaxing and enjoying some downtime. The Family Room was very spacious, and the view was beautiful. The location is also convenient, making it easy to get around and access nearby places. However, there are still some areas that need improvement. The shower mat was quite dirty, which was disappointing. Also, out of the three towels provided, two of them had a very strong unpleasant smell. I hope the hotel can pay more attention to the cleanliness and freshness of the towels and bathroom items. Another thing I found inconvenient was that there were only two charging sockets in the room, and one of them was located in the bathroom. For a family room, I think having more charging points would be much more convenient for guests. Overall, I still enjoyed my stay because of the spacious room, beautiful view, good breakfast, indoor swimming pool, gym and jacuzzi. However, I hope the hotel can improve the cleanliness of the bathroom items, the smell of the towels, and provide more convenient charging points.

Upon check-in, the bathroom had a slight odor, and breakfast was just average. However, overall it was decent. The room layout and everything else were fine. The main advantages are its proximity to the border crossing and the reasonable price.

Overall resort is acceptable, room is spacious, food is okay, location wise so so, pool is big. The baby pool was quite dirty. Noticed black grime between the tiles. Please pay a bit more attention when cleaning the baby pool, especially since it’s meant for young kids. Room’s shower have leaking. Called the staff, and they fixed immediately with glue. But the smell of the glue make the toilet stink for the whole night. Staffs are helpful and friendly. The indoor playground and breakfast for kids under 6 require an additional charge. We didn’t realize the indoor playground wasn’t free because the ads in the hallway didn’t mention it. We were planning to let the kids play for a while before checking out, but ended up going back to the room with disappointed (and crying 😂) kids. Overall, we had a good experience. Thank you for the warm hospitality! 😊

The location is great, very convenient for driving to Sutera Mall and nearby areas. It's a quiet hotel nestled in a bustling area. There are also plenty of food options nearby, like R&C, Ah Shui Durian, and Yu Xiao Er. If you don't have a car, there's a large food court downstairs that's open very late; I once saw it still lit up past midnight when I returned to the hotel. Next to the hotel, there's also an indoor badminton court and a McDonald's (inside the petrol station), so it's super convenient overall. The hotel also has pools for both kids and adults, a gym, and a conference room. The biggest advantage of this hotel is the incredible water pressure – showering is a real pleasure. I've stayed here 5 times already and will definitely keep coming back.

Stayed here last weekend and was disappointed with the room condition. The hotel is old and seems poorly maintained. The toilet blind was mouldy, towels were yellowish and worn, sink drain was stained, and there was dust around the bed. The shower glass divider also looked unsafe. Breakfast choices were very limited, and I noticed the chef was not wearing a mask or hair cap. Housekeeping staff seemed to do their best, but hotel management needs to improve the maintenance and upkeep of the property.

This used to be my favourite hotel in Bukit Indah. However, the price of the hotel has increased but not the service, nor the amenities. The hotel no longer provides a hand towel or the slipper. All these little touches were removed, might be due to cost savings measures.

This is a nice apartment hotel with no room service nor lobby, suitable for families especially with kids. The place is clean when we checked in, and the diy checkin is quite intuitive wth good instructions. For its price during non-peak, there’s little to complain. When it comes to peak though, prices soars, and the number of guests creates a jam at the lift access to the 39 floor apartment rooms. During our stay, one lift was down and with only 3/4 lifts, the waiting time during checkin and checkout is very very long. Hot water the shower is centralised and not reliable at all. Due to its proximity to KSL Mall, size of the room, and its good price during non-peak, its a recommend, but don’t expect perfection here.

1. Free but old and dimly lit parking lot. 2. Slow check-in process at the front desk. 3. Strong smell of soap in the hallway. 4. The room was okay, but there was no toothbrush or slippers. There were a lot of hairs and black spots on the bed, and the towels were dirty. I contacted the front desk to change the sheets and towels, and it took 20 minutes for someone to arrive. 5. You have to carry your luggage up the stairs from the parking lot to the front desk. A sign on the stairs says the door closes at 12, so you have to use the main entrance. 6. Very limited breakfast options, and the milk was sweet. Fried eggs cost extra.

A very clean capsule and bed to stay! The auntie uncle provided towel to shower as well! They have 4 games (wukong, it takes two, race car and etc)in their PS5, just a bit trouble to connect the Netflix because of the household settings. The computer all good, a lot of game inside and able use steam and riot, just all in Chinese language but can try to change a bit. An important things to say we are so lucky because we own the whole room (normal will be 8pax = 4 capsules)hahahah just because weekday are not busy than weekends!
