Shenzhen’s climate is very different from China’s inland cities. Shenzhen has a humid monsoon climate. Winters are mild and easy. The middle part of the year is long and warm. From April through September, Shenzhen gets a monsoon‑fed season. Making an advance plan for the Shenzhen weather will make all the difference.
When is the Best Time to Visit Shenzhen?
If you want the answer: Shenzhen is best from mid‑October to late November. During this period, Shenzhen feels warm and dry. It is mostly free from the humidity that usually dominates the rest of the year. Shenzhen in March to mid‑April is also a runner‑up, but the heavy rains start after that. Shenzhen then becomes wetter and cooler.
Pro Tip: Flight prices to Shenzhen fluctuate a lot with demand, especially around Chinese public holidays. Booking flights to Shenzhen early and watching for promotions can save you a meaningful amount.
Shenzhen’s climate is shaped by its location above the Tropic of Cancer and by its coastal position.
The average yearly temperature is 23.3°C. January is the month at about 15.7°C while July is the hottest at about 29.0°C.
Rainfall is abundant 1,933 mm each year and almost 86% of it falls from April to September.
Humidity stays high all year averaging around 74%, so heat can feel stickier than the thermometer shows.
Shenzhen experiences a typhoon season from June until early November with the most activity in July, August and September.
Sunlight is modest 1,853 hours per year and it is scarce from February to April when clouds often cover the sky.

Shenzhen in Winter (December – February)
Forget the picture of freezing China winters. Shenzhen’s winter feels short and gentle with highs around 20°C and only a few cool breezy spells. According to climate rules, a real winter in Shenzhen lasts only about two weeks on average. The rest of the season feels more like a mild spring.
Shenzhen Weather in December
Temperature: 14–21°C, with comfortably warm afternoons and cool, crisp nights.
Weather: Mostly dry and pleasant, with sunshine roughly half the days and humidity at some of the year’s lowest.
Shenzhen Weather in January
Temperature: 13–20°C, the coolest month of the year, though still far from cold.
Weather: Increasingly cloudy with occasional drizzle and fog; a few days each year turn genuinely chilly (daytime highs near 10°C).
Shenzhen Weather in February
Temperature: 14–21°C, slowly warming towards month-end.
Weather: Still changeable and often overcast, starting the grey, low-sunshine stretch; some years see a damp, foggy spell.
What to Pack?
Light to midweight layers, a sweater, a wind-resistant jacket, and a compact umbrella for showery days.
Shenzhen in Spring (March – May)
Spring arrives in two halves. Early Spring feels mild yet changeable. It is marked by the returning south weather (回南天). Warm moist air meets walls and floors, leaving surfaces damp and humidity close to 100%. By May, the city becomes hot and humid as the rainy season gathers strength.
Shenzhen Weather in March
Temperature: 17–23°C. Early March can still bring chilly, windy days.
Weather: Mostly cloudy with limited sunshine; occasional drizzle and the first hints of humidity.
Note: Watch out for “returning south” days — indoor surfaces can sweat and laundry struggles to dry.
Shenzhen Weather in April
Temperature: 21–27°C — genuinely pleasant and one of the best windows of the year.
Weather: Warming up with more sunshine, though short heavy downpours appear as the monsoon builds.
Nature: Parks and hillsides green up quickly; a lovely time for hiking and open-air attractions.
Shenzhen Weather in May
Temperature: 24–30°C. Sultry heat begins in earnest.
Weather: Rains become frequent and heavier, humidity climbs sharply, and afternoon thunderstorms are common.
What to pack?
Light, breathable T-shirts, a thin long-sleeve top for cooler mornings, a windbreaker, and always an umbrella or packable raincoat.

Summer here is long, hot, wet and summer is the heart of the monsoon and typhoon seasons. Daytime highs in summer regularly reach 32°C and summer highs can climb past 35°C. With humidity above 80%, summer feels like a steam bath. Rain in summer usually falls as short downpours, so the sun often reappears the same afternoon.
Shenzhen Weather in June
Temperature: 26–31°C. Proper summer settles in.
Weather: The wettest month (about 369 mm on average), with frequent heavy showers, thunderstorms and a risk of localised flooding.
Shenzhen Weather in July
Temperature: 27–32°C, with the year’s hottest days possible.
Weather: Hottest and sunniest month (over 214 hours of sunshine), but also peak typhoon season, with intense heat punctuated by violent storms and occasional multi-day disruption.
Shenzhen Weather in August
Temperature: 26–32°C, barely cooler than July.
Weather: Still hot, humid and storm-prone, with continued typhoon risk. A sea breeze and air-conditioned malls offer some relief.
The Typhoon Season
From June to early November, and most actively in July to September, an average of three to four tropical cyclones affect Shenzhen each year. Most are “brushes” that bring a day or two of heavy rain and strong wind rather than direct landfalls, but a strong typhoon can suspend ferries, delay flights and close beaches.
What to pack?
Light and breathable clothes made from fabrics are a good choice. A light sweatshirt works well for air-conditioned spaces. Sturdy sandals are comfortable and practical. Don’t forget a raincoat or a compact umbrella for rain. Sun protection is important too.
Shenzhen in Autumn (September – November)
Autumn is the season that Shenzhen gets just right. When the monsoon ends in September, the city moves into its driest, clearest and most comfortable time. This is the time people call "autumn sky, invigorating air", a period that locals really enjoy. Rain is not common. The humidity is at its most comfortable level.
Shenzhen Weather in September
Temperature: 26–32°C. Still warm and humid early in the month, easing as it progresses.
Weather: Early September can still see residual typhoon activity before conditions turn drier.
Shenzhen Weather in October
Temperature: 23–29°C. Consistently bright, sunny and dry; many consider it the best month of the year.
Weather: Minimal rainfall and low humidity; ideal for extended walking tours, rooftop views and beach visits.
Shenzhen Weather in November
Temperature: 19–26°C, cooling noticeably towards month-end.
Weather: Still dry and pleasant, with cooler, windier mornings appearing in the second half.
What to pack?
Light layers, a jacket or cardigan, for cooler evenings and comfortable walking shoes. You’ll rarely need an umbrella.

The best time to visit Shenzhen is from March to May and from October to November. The ideal time is from mid-October to November. During this time, the weather is dry, sunny and warm and the humidity from the year is finally gone. If you like landscapes, mild weather and fewer people, March to mid-April is a great choice before the heavy rains start.
Stay away from June to September unless you don't mind the heat, the mugginess, and the risk of typhoons, though budget travellers might find some deals here. Also avoid the Chinese public holidays when there are a lot of people and prices go up.
October and November offer warm, sunny, dry conditions with the year’s most comfortable humidity. April is a close second.
Does Shenzhen get very hot?

Generally June to early November, with peak activity in July, August and September. Most storms bring only a day or two of disruption.
Does it snow in Shenzhen?
