Melbourne Transport Map

Melbourne Transport Map

Getting around Melbourne is relatively easy thanks to its extensive network of trains, trams, and buses.

The city centre is particularly convenient because Melbourne has a Free Tram Zone, covering the CBD and Docklands. You do not need to use a myki when your entire tram journey stays within the Free Tram Zone.

Outside the Free Tram Zone, you generally need a myki or another accepted payment method.

Current metropolitan myki fares vary by zone, while the standard full fare daily cap is currently A$5.70 (S$5.15) during the temporary half price period running from 1 June 2026 until 1 January 2027.

Trams

Trams are one of the easiest ways to explore Melbourne particularly around the city centre.

The Free Tram Zone covers much of the CBD and Docklands, making it especially useful for tourist staying centrally.

You can use trams to reach areas such as Fitzroy, Carlton, Richmond and South Melbourne, although journeys outside the Free Tram Zone require a valid ticket.

Good to Know:

  • Free Tram Zone travel does not require a myki
  • Check whether your entire journey remain within the Free Tram Zone
  • Trams can become busy during peak periods
  • Use the official journey planner before travelling to check routes and disruptions

Trains

Melbourne's train network is useful for reaching suburbs and attractions outside the central area.

Major stations visitors may use include Flinders Street Station, Southern Cross Station and Melbourne Central.

Trains are also useful when travelling towards areas such as Richmond and Brighton.

Good to Know:

  • Most train journey require a myki
  • Tap on and off when required
  • Check the latest service information before travelling
  • Southern Cross Station is convenient for airport transfers and regional connections

Buses

Buses cover areas that are not served directly by trains or trams.

They are generally more useful when visiting outer suburbs or attractions away from the main tourist areas.

For most short city holidays, you may use trams and trains more often than buses.

SkyBus

SkyBus Melbourne City Express connects Melbourne Airport with Southern Cross Station in the city.

The current adult fare is A$25.90 (S$23.40) one way or A$43.40 (S$39.30) return.

This is one of the easiest options for tourists carrying a luggage because the service runs directly between airport and the city.

Ride Hailing

Ride hailing services are useful when travelling with family, carrying luggage or visiting areas that are less convenient by public transport.

They can also be convenient after dinner or when travelling back to your hotel late at night.

Good to Know:

  • Prices depends on distance and demand
  • Useful for groups splitting the fare
  • Allow extra time during peak traffic
  • Airport trips may cost more than public transport

Car Rental

A rental is usually unnecessary if you are staying around central Melbourne.

However, it becomes more useful if you plan to visit destinations outside the city such as the Great Ocean Road, Yarra Valley and Philip Island.

📃Ticketing/Card System

myki

The myki is the main ticketing system for Melbourne public transport.

You can use myki on trains, trams and buses across Melbourne and some regional Victorian services. A full fare myki is available for visitors, while Android users can also use Mobile myki through Google Wallet.

Good to Know:

  • Buy or top up your myki before travelling
  • myki cards are available at selected stations, machines and authorised retailers
  • You cannot buy or top up a myki directly on a tram or bus
  • Android users can use Mobile myki
  • Check the latest fare rules before your trip
💡 Travel Tip for Singapore Travellers: If you are staying in the CBD, skip the rental car for your city sightseeing days. Walk and use trams instead, then rent a car only when heading outside Melbourne.

How to Plan Melbourne Itinerary

Melbourne Itinerary Map

One of the easiest ways to explore Melbourne is to group attractions by location instead of travelling back and forth across the city.

Day 1: Melbourne CBD

Start around Flinders Street Station and Federation Square.

Walk through Hosier Lane before exploring Melbourne's laneways, cafés and shopping streets.

Visit Queen Victoria Market if it is open during your travel dates, then spend the evening around Chinatown or the CBD.

Day 2: Southbank and Melbourne Gardens

Start your morning at the National Gallery of Victoria.

Walk along the Yarra River towards Melbourne Skydeck and Southbank.

In the afternoon, head towards the Royal Botanic Gardens and Shrine of Remembrance.

Finish the day with dinner around Southbank.

Day 3: Fitzroy, Carlton and Richmond

Start in Fitzroy for breakfast and coffee.

Continue towards Carlton and visit Melbourne Museum or Carlton Gardens.

In the afternoon, explore Richmond and visit the MCG if you are interested in sports.

Day 4: St Kilda and Brighton

Spend your morning around St Kilda Beach and St Kilda Pier.

Have lunch around Acland Street before travelling towards Brighton Beach.

Take photos of the colourful bathing boxes before returning to central Melbourne.

💡 Travel Tip: If you only have two or three days in Melbourne, focus on the CBD, Southbank and one inner city neighbourhood. Save destinations such as the Great Ocean Road or Phillip Island for a separate day trip.

Final Thoughts on Melbourne Trip

Yarra River

Melbourne may look compact around the CBD, but each neighbourhood offers a different experience.

Melbourne CBD is best for first time visitors, shopping and sightseeing, while Southbank is ideal for culture, restaurants and river views.

Fitzroy is a great choice for cafés and nightlife, while St Kilda offers a more relaxed beachside experience.

With a good little planning, you can combine city sightseeing, food, shopping, culture and beaches without spending too much time travelling between different parts of the city.

The hotel's location is pretty good. The one-day tour I booked met right outside the Windsor Hotel, which was only a few minutes' walk away. Both Red Apple and Green Apple supermarkets are within walking distance, and Chinatown isn't far either, making evenings very lively. The hotel facilities are admittedly a bit old, but the hygiene is decent. Breakfast is just okay, but it's filling, and surprisingly, they even offered congee. When checking out, since I paid a cash deposit, I had to wait a while for them to inspect the room before I could get my money back and leave. After the room check, I realized I'd left a piece of clothing in the room. The staff brought it down for me, neatly folded and presented it with both hands, which I really appreciated!

The location is excellent, the room is spacious, and very clean. The breakfast selection is extensive, though you might encounter long queues if there's a large conference group. The staff are very friendly towards children. Overall, this was the best hotel of our trip!

The room was decent, and the bed was incredibly soft, a real 'white-people bed' as they say, with excellent blackout curtains perfect for sleeping. We booked a one-bedroom suite, and the staff thoughtfully added an extra bed for us. The only downside was the somewhat chaotic front desk management. When we checked in, they told us the suite we booked was unavailable, claiming it was double-booked and offering us a standard room instead. It was the first time I'd heard of being downgraded because a room wasn't available! 😂 After I showed them our confirmation, they fiddled around a bit and eventually 'found' a suite for us. However, our booking included breakfast, and after the room change, we couldn't access the breakfast area the next day. We had to go back to the front desk to explain the situation again, and they finally gave us a card. On the second morning of our stay, we again couldn't get breakfast and spent another half an hour sorting it out. It was quite a hassle, making me feel like the money spent wasn't really worth it. Throughout the whole process, there was no mention of compensation; they just fixed the immediate problem. In previous hotels, when there was an issue, they usually provided a better experience after resolving it. As for the restaurant teacups, honestly, they weren't clean; many had coffee stains.

I booked this hotel during a Ctrip promotion, and honestly, the price was a steal at 1000/night. First, the pros: Location: It's right in the city center, first ring, free zone. You can take the tram for a free city walk. If you're on a day tour, the bus pick-up point is just a two-minute walk away. The front desk staff, Holy, and the senior gentleman from concierge were both very nice. Now, for the cons: The coffee spoon wasn't clean, it was dirty. The minibar fridge had cooling issues; the bottom was full of water. These, I could overlook. However, and seriously, as a Hyatt Globalist, I rarely stay at InterContinental, and I have never, in all my previous experiences, encountered an unlocked room door. I left my room early Friday morning for a day tour and returned at 9:30 PM to find my room door unlocked, just as pictured. I was shocked. The next day, I spoke to the duty manager, and they checked the surveillance footage, confirming that no one had entered my room. But my stay experience was truly poor. Such carelessness, forgetting to lock the guest's door after cleaning. Plus, this hotel's elevators don't require a room card swipe. At 9:30 PM, both the front desk and concierge were empty, making it easy for anyone to access any floor. I somewhat regret not spending a bit more to stay at the Grand Hyatt. Also, I heard this hotel is rebranding to Regent, oh my! InterContinental truly feels like a makeshift operation. To think they dare to rebrand to Regent like this! This hotel usually sells at the same price as the Grand Hyatt, and if it weren't for this promotion, I definitely wouldn't have chosen it. InterContinental left such a terrible impression on me; it's really hard not to come here and complain.

Located about 10 min walk away from convention center. The tram is just around the corner. Clean room. Comfortable bed and pillow. Limited channels on TV but OK... Breakfast was great and enough variety. Service was excellent. I arrived early in the morning and the staff allowed an early check in, my room was ready at about noon and they informed me via email. I left on a midnight flight, when I collected my luggage from the hotel at around 7pm, the staff Mr Ady suggested that I could take a shower on Level 5 gym before heading to the airport. Truly appreciate this suggestion as it has been a long day of work. Excellent service. Highly recommended.

My stay at Brady Hotel Central Melbourne was absolutely fantastic! The biggest highlight has to be its superb location – incredibly close to the subway entrance, making it super easy to get around. For foodies like me, it was even better: the hotel is surrounded by all sorts of restaurants and eateries. There's so much variety, and you don't even have to go far to find great food. The room itself was very comfortable, and the overall facilities and service were top-notch. It's rare to find a hotel in Melbourne with such convenient transport links and amazing food options nearby. It offers excellent value for money, and I highly recommend it!

Need to check in on the 2nd floor. Location: It's on a very narrow street with a small sign, but it's close to Chinatown which is quite convenient. Downstairs, there's a Chinese noodle restaurant that accepts WeChat Pay, and also a cafe. Cleanliness: Overall, it's quite new. There are no toothbrushes or slippers, and the room isn't big, but it's fine for one person. It's cleaned daily. The sink, toilet, and shower are all separate. There's a kettle, but no bottled water; you need to go to the 2nd floor to get water. I stayed on the 24th floor, the elevator is fast, and the night view from the window is nice.

Overall, not a bad hotel. The location is very convenient; all major city attractions are within walking distance. Everything is clean, the reception/foyer areas are pleasant, and there's a cozy lounge in front of the cafe entrance where you can read a book or just pass the time if housekeeping is cleaning your room. The housekeepers are Chinese women, and there were no complaints about the cleaning. It was nice that they changed the bed linen every 2-3 days without us having to ask. The room is certainly very small, but it's perfectly fine for one person, especially if you're there for sightseeing rather than spending time in the room. The miniature window overlooks a wall with AC units and oddly only opened to a 15-centimeter gap at the bottom. Holes in the window screen (mine had a torn screen on this small window) would be a problem in the summer, but no bugs will fly in during a winter month. The room renovation is relatively recent. There's a nice backlight above the headboard. The duvet covers are the same as in Africa, by the way – two regular sheets on either side of the duvet. In the shower, it's inconvenient that there's no handheld showerhead, only an overhead rain shower. There are no toothbrushes with paste or hair conditioner, so keep that in mind. What is provided: shower gel, hairdryer, ironing board with iron, wall-mounted air conditioner, TV, refrigerator, kettle, and everything works perfectly. Bottled water isn't provided because there's no point: the water in Australia is very clean, and everyone drinks tap water. Regarding breakfast: in the 16 days I spent at this hotel, the menu never changed. What you see in my photos here is what was in the cafe every day, the same items in the same spots. The staff is very friendly and always ready to help.

I stayed at the Park Hyatt Melbourne on my solo trip and was very satisfied with the overall experience. The room was spacious and quiet, and the housekeeping was meticulous. The bedding was comfortable, leading to a great night's sleep. The hotel environment is elegant, and the location is quite convenient, with a luxurious ambiance throughout. The staff were professional and polite; both check-in and check-out were very smooth. The facilities are well-maintained, making for a relaxing stay. Our family of three stayed for one night. First, upon check-in, our room wasn't ready because cleaning was still in progress. We waited in the lounge where we were offered snacks and drinks. It took about 30 minutes, and as an apology, we received two bar vouchers. So far, so good. However, the next morning at 9:30 AM, a cleaning staff member came to our room to ask when we would be checking out. Check-out was at 11 AM, so I don't understand why they needed to come to the room to prompt us to leave. Then, 15 minutes before check-out, someone came to the room again, saying there was an apology gift (bottled beer and Coca-Cola, which were inconvenient to carry). We also received a call from reception. Our relaxing morning was completely ruined. I would not recommend this hotel to anyone looking for a peaceful stay.

The rooms were very clean and beds were huge! Very comfortable and the place was convenient and very central. The only issue we had was locating the hotel. We had problems finding it as the GPS could not get us to it. However, we were very grateful that Ayden who worked at the Concierge - offered and took the initiative to walk with us and guide us from where we parked our car which was a 10min walk away, to drive our luggage to the hotel lobby. This hotel was designed by I.M. Pei, no less! It has a unique design with a strong French influence. It's been recently renovated, and the rooms are very spacious. However, the beds in the twin room are quite small, probably only 0.9 meters wide. The location is super convenient, with luxury boutiques right downstairs.
