If you’re planning a trip to Xi’an, timing your visit can make all the difference. I remember my first time there. I had to navigate crowds at the Terracotta Warriors and battle the summer heat. Since then, I’ve learned that choosing the right season not only makes sightseeing more comfortable but also lets you soak up Xi’an’s culture more comfortably. I’ll share my tips on the best time to visit Xi’an in this blog, so you can plan your trip with confidence.
When Is the Best Time to Visit Xi'an?
When it comes to deciding the best time to visit Xi’an, I have to say it’s spring and autumn! Visiting Xi’an between March and May, the city comes alive with blooming flowers and mild temperatures. It’s a perfect time to have a city walk and visit the Terracotta Warriors without breaking a sweat. Autumn, from September to October, has crisp air, clear skies, and beautiful fall colours along the ancient City Wall.
Xi’an’s summer can be hot and crowded, while winter is quieter and budget-friendly, but for me, nothing beats the comfortable weather and scenery of spring and autumn in Xi’an.
Weather and Seasons in Xi'an

Xi’an sits in the heart of China, surrounded by the Qinling Mountains, giving it a continental climate with four distinct seasons.
Spring (March-May)
This is my favourite. Spring in Xi’an is mild and refreshing, with temperatures ranging from 12°C to 22°C (54°F–72°F). Humidity is low, and rain showers are occasional.
Summer (June-August)
Can feel intense, with highs around 30–34°C+ (86–93°F+) and sticky humidity. Sudden thunderstorms are common.
Autumn (September-October)
Temperatures are comfortable at 15–25°C (59–77°F). It’s perfect for photography. I recommend layering, as mornings can be cool while afternoons warm up.
Winter (November-February)
It’s cold but surprisingly manageable, with temperatures between -2°C and 8°C (28–46°F). Snow is rare but magical when it falls over the ancient cityscape.
