Temple of Heaven

Steeped in imperial traditions, the Temple of Heaven is one of the most respected UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Beijing. Located in the part of Beijing, this large religious area was where emperors, from the Ming dynasty and the Qing dynasty would come together to pray for good harvests.

Must‑Visit Attractions Inside Temple of Heaven

The main landmarks run along a north-south central line. There are two ways to explore. One route begins at the South Gate. Follows the old imperial sacrificial path heading north. The other starts at the East Gate, which is quicker for a shorter visit.

Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests (Qiniandian) 

The symbol of the Temple of Heaven. This amazing round building, with three layers of roof that has deep blue tiles, was built out of wood and didn't use a single metal nail. There are twenty-eight wooden pillars inside that represent the four seasons the twelve months of the year and the twelve traditional Chinese time periods. This is the place where emperors came every spring to pray for harvests.

Circular Mound Altar (Yuanqiu Tan)

This is an open‑air platform made of marble. It has three tiers. It's used for grand ceremonies that honor the heavens. Each stone slab, step and railing follows multiples of nine. The number nine shows imperial power and heavenly authority. In the center of the top tier sits the Heavenly Heart Stone.

Imperial Vault of Heaven & Echo Wall (Huangqiongyu) 

The round brick Echo Wall is famous around the world for its sound trick. When two people stand at ends of the curved wall and speak quietly against the wall, their voices can be heard clearly along the smooth edge. In front of the hall, there are the Three-Sound Stones, where if you stomp your feet, and you get many echoing sounds because of ancient sound design. This hall used to hold memorial tablets for worship of the sky.

Danbi Bridge 

Stretching 360 metres long and elevated above ground, this grand stone walkway formed the sacred imperial path, thought to connect the mortal world with heaven. It links the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests in the north to the Circular Mound Altar in the south.

Zhai Palace (Palace of Abstinence) 

Emperors stayed here for fasting and purification for three days before heaven‑sacrifice rituals. Surrounded by double moats and walls, it offers a quiet retreat away from busy tourist crowds.

Divine Music Administration (Shenleshu) 

An ancient institution for rehearsing sacrificial music and dance. Today it hosts exhibitions showcasing imperial ritual musical instruments and performances.

How To Get To Temple of Heaven?

By Metro (Recommended)

• East Gate: Take Metro Line 5 to Tiantan East Gate Station, Exit A for direct access. This is the most convenient entry point for the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests.
• South Gate: Take Metro Line 5 to Tiantan South Gate Station.
• West Gate: Take Metro Line 8 to Tianqiao Station, Exit C and walk a short distance.
• North Gate: Alight at Qiaowan Station on Metro Line 7, around 10 minutes’ walking distance away.

By Bus

Multiple public bus routes serve each gate.

• East Gate: Routes 6, 34, 35, 36, 39, 41
• South Gate: Routes 36, 53, 62, 122
• West Gate: Routes 2, 20, 120

Full address for taxi drivers: Temple of Heaven Park, No 1 Tiantan East Lane, Dongcheng District, Beijing. Paid car parking is available onsite; public transport is still preferred during weekends and holidays.

Best Time To Visit Temple of Heaven

• Best seasons are March through May and September through November. The weather is gentle and perfect for long-distance walking and taking pictures. Stay away from national holidays and school breaks because a lot more people visit during those times.
• The best time of day is morning. You can watch Beijing residents doing tai-chi, calligraphy and traditional folk activities under old cypress trees. Weekdays are much quieter compared to weekends.
• A key reminder is to check the weekly Monday closure rule for the ancient buildings before you decide on your travel plans. You can walk in the park grounds on Mondays. You cannot go inside the famous main monuments.
