GHL Hotel Lago Titicaca

Puno|3.38km from downtown
I do not like leaving negative comments. But this hotel does not qualify for the 5 stars shown on the hotel plaque nor is it the 4-star hotel as listed by our travel agency. It is a 3-star facility and not even at the top of this rank... The lounge and bar are nice and well-kept. The restaurant food is ok but not spectacular. The lake view is nice though not from every room. The rooms seem to have been waiting for major renovation for years and years... We arrived with the PeruRail train from Cusco - together with about 10 other couples, just like us most of them individual travelers. The front desk could not cope with this ”rush” and room assignment took some time. Our ”prime sunset room” was small and unpretentious, i.e. plain, old-fashioned style, worn furniture, a bathroom with a scratched door, a tub with a plastic curtain (reminding me of cheap US chain hotels in the 80ies) that did not prevent the flooding of floor and toilet seat when taking a shower. There was a stain on the linen. And we had a problem with the room temperature. The display on the wall showed 27°C and we tried in vain to switch the temperature to 18°C for the night. When contacting the reception desk we were told that the rooms had no A/C but heating only. Their advice was to open the big panorama window... ”Don't worry. There is no insects at Puno.” We opened it during our absence for dinner but had to close it for the night. And the temperature was still high... To be fair I would like to add that the staff was nice. But the hotel itself was a real disappointment. I wonder how they got so many top evaluations in December 2023 from people who had never before evaluated any other hotel...

Hotel Hacienda Plaza de Armas
4.2/563 Reviews
We were hosted 1 night at the Hotel Hacienda Plaza de Armas, which is in the heart of Puno and we like it very much. With only 30 rooms, the hotel offers a welcome atmosphere, with corridors decorated with vibrant pictures of local painters. The rooms are spacious and cosy, with old furniture but very well preserved. The highlight of the room is the balcony with views to the square, from which you can admire the majesty Catedral de Puno. The rooms are quiet, because they have a noise-free window. The breakfast is quite simple, with bread, cheese, yoghurt and natural juices. I liked to have coke tea available 24 hours at the reception. In case of more severe symptoms of the altitude malaise, you can request 5 min of oxygen free of charge.

Very good experience! The hotel was marvelous and very comfortable. The personal of the front desk so friendly and all time nice we recommend the hotel and the location was perfect, very near of plaza de armas and historical downtown. Guadalupe was so kindly with us. Thank you Hacienda Puno.
Tierra Viva Puno Plaza
4.5/541 Reviews
I would highly recommend the hotel Tierra Viva at the heart of the Puno plaza. The location is very convenient to access the main plaza as well as restaurants and lake titikaka. The hotel staff was very helpful, and Albert went above and beyond to ensure our stay was enjoyable and successful. Breakfast in the morning was incredible. The rooms and lobby were clean and felt very secure. Also the heat in the room is a huge plus as it does get cold at night.

Hotel Balsa Inn
4.1/518 Reviews
Good hotel in a fantastic location right next to the main square. Very comfortable beds and combined with slight altitude dizziness had best night sleep! Breakfast spread could be a bit better/more filling, but it was good. There were issues with hot water on both nights I stayed here, and it took a while, but the staff were very attentive and fixed it.
Qelqatani Hotel
4.2/514 Reviews
The Quelqatani hotel was a real rescue. We were driving here from Arequipe and on the road from 30 degrees heat we were caught by a purge and a sharp cold until -5. Such a fall was sharp, snow was going. We were sharply re-clothed in the bus instead of swimsuits and wildly frozen. The hotel was prepared for such a temperature. The room was warm. And the bottom was oxygen cylinders as Puna is a high-rise city. We spent a little time here, but were surrounded by care and attention. There is very quiet, spacious rooms, excellent work wifi and delicious breakfasts.
