You need to stay at Shojoshin-in if you come to Koyasan! There's an English speaking receptionist when you check in, a Chinese monk and you can always use google translate to communicate with the Japanese-only staff/monks! There's goma prayers at 1pm, a tour of the temple only for lodgers at 4pm, dinner served at 530pm (& the food is super flavourful), you can do sutra copying in your room (pay at reception) and pay for a handwritten goshuin as well! Shojoshin-in is the closest temple to Okunoin's entrance so its super convenient to do a night tour (run by an external vendor). Main doors close at 5pm but you can enter through the side door. I met a Japanese lady whom stays only at Shojoshin-in when she comes to Koyasan every year! I miss this place already :(

Very interesting and calm place to visit. Very comfortable rooms, and nice staff. I also had a conversation with monk, please, enjoy conversation, they can translate on your language.

The temple is really beautiful with stunning paintings in the dining room. There is a morning worship service you can join in which starts at 6am, but you can join any time as well as leave the service. Food is really delicious, I didn’t expect much from vegetarian dishes, but they were great. The amount of food is pretty decent, I didn’t feel hungry by the morning even tho I had dinner at 5pm. I traveled alone but I believe this room is specious enough for a couple. The convent location of the temple allows to walk to the main tramples and tourist office (where I got the night tour to the cemetery booked) as well as to the Eko-in temple from where that tour sets off.

Such a beautiful experience! The meditation & ceremonies were really lovely, staff were welcoming. Only critique is that it was very cold in the corridors- but they made such an effort elsewhere so it was okay e.g. heated blankets in bed, heated meditation carpet, air conditioning etc. Thank you again! Would definitely come back

Definitely interesting experience. Partly tourist tradition, partly religious. As a new, atypical experience in Japan, the meal ritual and the vegetarian cuisine itself were interesting. Participation in the morning Buddhist prayer was valuable. Comfortable nice leather slippers. Saving hot springs on a rainy day. The strict end of the day time was inconvenient for us: the front door closed at 9 pm, and we were not allowed to linger during our walk. Quiet time from 9 p.m.Baths close at 8 and 9 pm. Thanks for the experience!🙏

This temple stay is amazing. Vegetarian breakfast and dinner was great. The morning prayer and fire ritual was great to take part in. They also offered an afternoon mediation tutorial. There was a night tour for the cemetery, however I did not take part. It was a little concerning that the English tour was ¥1000 yen more than the Japanese tour. Overall I highly recommend this place.

A short walk from Ekoin, very hospitable and friendly service. Room is big and clean with heater provided. Public bath is big but there’s only one so have to reserve slot. They have fire goma ritual everyday for guests and also sutra writing for free provided. Very recommended temple stay!

The toilet and bath seemed to have been renovated, and unlike the atmosphere of the room, they were very modern and clean. I was very satisfied with being able to do morning services as is customary in a temple lodging.

We didn’t expect it’s not a hostel but Buddhist temple) it was a nice experience to live here. It’s very clean inside and rooms look like typical Japanese minkas inside. The place is very picturesque around and it’s easy to get there.
