"The hotel itself was nice and clean. The rooms are spacious. There's a heater and dehumidifier in the room. Food is buffet breakfast and dinner.
We were in the west wing which requires a bit of a walk to get to the room. And the main inconvenience is there is a flight of stairs to get up before having an elevator to the room floor. The outdoor onsen is in a different section to the indoor onsen.
The hotel is certainly geared for skiers as everything closes during the middle of the day (souvenir shop, onsen). So make sure you have activities booked in advance.
The website of the hotel is also a bit confusing with the number in-house activities available - be sure to check with the front counter first. Peak hour staff has good command in English but need translation for night staff.
A few things of note:
- the shuttle is very busy at the 3pm and 10am run - make sure you pre-book
- there is a shuttle to tsurunoyu iriguchi onsen 鶴の湯温泉 from a bus stop near the hotel, no need to take the public bus"

"A great choice for a snowy day stay, it's close to the station so you don't have to drag your luggage far. The common lounge area has a microwave, disposable amenities, and free drinks and water. Remember to check if your bathrobe is complete; I found one missing during my stay. The self-check-in system is fantastic, perfect for introverts. After 7 PM, the area gets quite dark with not many shops around, so those who prefer a lively atmosphere should consider this carefully."

"The must-visit cherry blossom and maple viewing place in Akita must be [Kakunodate]. It is also the hometown of samurai with a long history in Japan and is known as ”Olu's Little Kyoto”. But accommodation here is very expensive, especially during the cherry blossom and maple leaf seasons. It is even harder to find a room. During the maple leaf season, I booked a low-cost accommodation four months in advance (Kakunodate B&B Fengya) for ¥996/2 nights including breakfast. So this is one of the few B&Bs. The Japanese female boss speaks English very well and is very enthusiastic. She personally prepares breakfast with local ingredients. She also serves lunch and afternoon tea, and also sells handmade food. The B&B has free bicycle rentals, so you can easily visit all the samurai houses in Kakunokan. Most of the Japanese locals and foreigners who stay here, as well as *********, can speak English. Old people like us from the mainland who cannot speak Japanese or English are purely isolated cases. The landlady was afraid that we might have some problems, so she specially invited Mr. Ren, a retired (Chinese) teacher from Kakunodate University to come and ask us if we had any problems! The boss lady learned that we had to book a taxi to take us to Kakunodate JR Station at 6:30 tomorrow, but the taxi service at Kakunodate starts at 8 o'clock. The boss lady personally took us to the train station despite her busy schedule. I was really touched! However, the B&B does not have a pick-up station service. When we arrived, we took a taxi to the B&B for 800 yen."

"The five-person room was a little cramped, but although the room was a bit old, it was very clean.
Dinner and breakfast were both buffet style; the selection wasn't extensive, but the ingredients were fresh and tasty.
There was a free drink bar and popsicles outside the large public bath, and inside the bath, there were children's toys for soaking, which is rare in Japanese hot springs.
Overall, if you plan to visit nearby attractions, it's a great accommodation choice."

"The hotel is located near the bus station and has convenient transportation. It is clean and the food is delicious. The boss is very hospitable. Because I don’t speak Japanese, the boss patiently used his mobile phone to translate Japanese into Chinese to communicate with me because I had to catch a flight and the kitchen was ready early. I prepared breakfast. After checking out, the boss told me in translated words that the road outside was slippery in the snow and I had to be careful. It made me feel warm."

"The New Tamagawa Onsen Hotel has the same origin as Tamagawa Onsen and is famous for having the largest amount of water spray and the strongest acidity in Japan. The hot spring is the most important thing. It is a hot spring treatment area with ”the best acidic hot spring in Japan”. Its acidity is stronger than any hot spring I have ever bathed in. There are 11 types of baths (3 types of hot springs: 100%, 50%, and weakly acidic, open-air baths, and indoor natural rock baths). The bathhouse is built with cypress, exuding the cypress atmosphere. The high ceiling is a masterpiece. Sleeping on the natural rock bed indoors is a wonderful experience that can kill cancer cells in the body. The hotel is located deep in the mountains and old forests. When the maple leaves come in autumn, they are so beautiful that they are intoxicating! The Ugo Kotsu bus stop is directly in front of the hotel.
Hotel bus → Tamagawa Onsen (5 buses a day). In addition to the hotel shuttle bus, there are two other bus routes, but the time is limited, so you need to check in advance. If you take the bus, the detour is longer, about 15 minutes, but if you walk, it takes about 15 minutes, and you can drive on a basically flat mountain road. There is also a visitor center on the way, and you can enjoy the nature along the way. When we arrived at the Tamagawa Onsen Natural Research Road, we saw geothermal heat erupting everywhere and the air was filled with the smell of preserved eggs. It was a very healing Tamagawa Onsen!"

"I arrived at Kakunodate Station in the morning, checked in at the hotel next to the station, left my luggage there, and went sightseeing on foot.
I was told that they would contact me on my mobile phone when my room was ready. My luggage was delivered at 2:30 pm and I was able to enter my room without any problems.
The entrance is unlocked with a PIN code instead of a key.
The guest rooms, converted from storehouses, are unique and wonderful, and the interior of the two-story building is stylish and comfortable. Dinner was at a local restaurant, and breakfast was delivered at the specified time.
The side dishes typical of Akita served in a birch craft box, warm white rice, and miso soup were very delicious.
On the way back, they delivered my luggage to the station again, so I was able to move around without the hassle of carrying my suitcase.

GGuest UserHighly recommended! The hotel's service begins before check-in, with a detailed check-in process email. In winter, they even arrange luggage cart service, making it convenient whether you're driving or using public transportation. Both meals during my stay were amazing. The hotel was renovated in 2025, and its facilities and services are top-notch in the area.

CChangtuixuejieThe location is decent. You can take the Nyuto Line bus from Lake Tazawa to the resort center station. You can either arrange for the hotel to pick you up or walk for 15-20 minutes (though it's a bit tough with luggage due to an uphill section).
The main draw of this hotel is the complimentary shuttle to Tsuru-no-Yu for an hour of hot spring bathing at 8 PM.
Dinner and breakfast are included and the food is pretty good.
The hotel service is excellent. With only a few guest rooms, it feels very private and is perfect for a relaxing stay of 1-2 nights.

YYuvaLove the location and the private onsen with lake view, you have option to reserve this by yourself so it’s quite convenient as we have a room for ourselves for 30 minutes to enjoy the onsen and the views. The building is quite old from outside but the room and amenities are quite okay, they provided everything you needed for your stay. We would love to go back for the cherry blossoms

The location is excellent, in the center of Kakunodate, near Samurai House, Hinoki Uchigawa and local specialty restaurants. It was a pleasant stay experience!
