For this trip, I decided to do something different. Instead of flying or taking a coach, I travelled from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur by train. This trip gave me the chance to experience it for myself. The journey takes around four hours, and food and drinks are available on board. Travelling by rail through Malaysia offers a different perspective from flying, and it’s something I think every travel enthusiast should try at least once. That said, the experience isn’t as straightforward as many might expect. There are multiple immigration checkpoints, which mean getting off the train several times to clear formalities. The seats were also firmer than I expected, making the journey less comfortable than a coach. If I were rating the experience: · Journey Time: ★★★★☆ · Comfort: ★★☆☆☆ · Convenience: ★★☆☆☆ · Value: ★★★☆☆ · Overall: ★★★☆☆ So, would I do it again? Probably not. I’m glad I experienced it because it allows me to share an honest, first-hand review with my readers. But for future trips, I’d either fly or take a coach. For me, the coach remains the best balance of comfort and convenience. Once you’ve cleared Malaysian immigration at the Second Link, you can simply sit back, relax or sleep until Kuala Lumpur. Flying is still the fastest option if time is your priority. The train sits somewhere in between. It’s an interesting experience, especially if you’ve never crossed Malaysia by rail before, but it’s not the option I’d personally choose again. That’s what Crumpled Nomad is about. Some cities are worth visiting once… but Kuala Lumpur is the kind of city that keeps calling you back. ❤️ Many people have visited Kuala Lumpur. But I think the way I experienced KL was a little different. Instead of booking a hotel, I chose a residence for one simple reason, I wanted to wake up to the city's incredible skyline every day. From my room, I could clearly see the Petronas Twin Towers, Merdeka 118, The Exchange 106, and KL Tower. And there was something else I loved even more... Watching the endless flow of traffic on Kuala Lumpur's elevated highways from above. Sometimes the roads were packed, creating long rivers of glowing red brake lights stretching across the city. Sitting quietly by the window, coffee in hand, I often found myself thinking, "This city never really sleeps." Those moments made me fall in love with Kuala Lumpur even more. 📍Day 1 My first stop was Little India, where authentic Indian food instantly made me feel at home. After that, I visited KL Sentral, prayed at the National Mosque of Malaysia, and enjoyed dinner at Halab KL Arabia Restaurant. 📍Day 2 I explored the Petronas Twin Towers, had lunch and shopped at Suria KLCC, then visited Sultan Abdul Samad Jamek Mosque, Bangunan Sultan Abdul Samad, Merdeka Square, and ended the evening at the beautiful River of Life. 📍Day 3 I spent the day at Berjaya Times Square Theme Park using tickets I had booked in advance through Trip.com. Later, I wandered around Bukit Bintang, had dinner at Sungei Wang Plaza, and finished the night on the KL Hop-On Hop-Off Bus, also booked through Trip.com. 📍Day 4 I started early with a train ride to Batu Caves. In the afternoon, I explored Putrajaya, where Putra Mosque, Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin Mosque, and the Prime Minister's Office became the highlights of my day. At night, I explored Chinatown, enjoyed local street food, and finished with delicious handmade Chinese noodles. 📍Day 5 On my final day, I visited my favorite shopping destination, NU Sentral, and enjoyed one last bowl of my favorite Curry Laksa before packing for the airport. For me, Kuala Lumpur isn't just about famous landmarks. It's about slowing down, exploring at your own pace, eating what you truly love, and appreciating the city's energy from sunrise until midnight. Sometimes, simply sitting by the window with a cup of coffee while watching the skyline is already the perfect travel experience. Five-star luxury doesn’t always have to come with a five-star price tag. I paid under S$180 a night for my stay at Sofitel Kuala Lumpur Damansara, and it genuinely exceeded my expectations. The room was spacious and elegant, featuring Sofitel’s famous MyBed and a beautiful marble bathroom. The service was warm and professional, the breakfast was excellent, and the facilities felt every bit like an international luxury hotel. What I also appreciated was the location. Instead of the usual Bukit Bintang crowds, Damansara offers a quieter, more upscale neighbourhood while still being well connected. DC Mall is attached to the hotel, and Pavilion Damansara Heights is just a short walk away. Luxury, to me, isn’t about paying the highest room rate. It’s about finding hotels that consistently deliver a genuine five-star experience without charging five-star prices. At this price, I’d happily stay here again. It’s been years since I last visited Kuala Lumpur, and this week, I finally made my way back, checking into Kimpton Naluria Kuala Lumpur. Open since late 2025, it is not only TRX’s first and currently only hotel, but also Malaysia’s first Kimpton, the luxury lifestyle brand under IHG Hotels & Resorts. · From the moment I stepped into the hotel, I was greeted by its distinctive signature scent and beautifully designed interiors. Earthy shades of brown and green, textured walls inspired by tree bark and thoughtfully curated art installations give the space a warm, welcoming feel. My favourite piece is on Level 3, where shimmering blue and green stones are suspended from the ceiling on almost invisible threads, creating the illusion of tropical raindrops floating in mid air. · Instead of a traditional lobby, I was welcomed into The Living Room, where check in, relaxing, working and socialising all happen in one inviting space. There are cosy sofas, comfortable armchairs and even a long communal table designed for guests to gather and connect. Every evening from 5 to 6pm, Kimpton Social brings everyone together over complimentary wines, cocktails and light bites, creating an easy way for guests to mingle. · With four distinct dining venues, food is another reason to spend a little more time in the hotel. Rise & Grind serves great coffee with a nod to Malaysia’s kopitiam culture, while Tuai + Till brings together local favourites and Western brasserie classics. Breakfast is served here every morning too, although I completely missed it because the bed was so comfortable that I ended up oversleeping. Sabato’s transports you back to the 1970s with its Italian American menu, disco inspired interiors and even a fully functional jukebox. Upstairs at Four Siblings, the only spice themed rooftop bar in TRX, cocktails take inspiration from four essential Malaysian spices: star anise, cinnamon, cardamom and clove. Paired with sweeping views of the Kuala Lumpur skyline, including KL Tower and Merdeka 118, it quickly became one of my favourite spots in the hotel. · Its location in the heart of TRX is another big plus. With direct lift access to The Exchange TRX, shopping, dining and MRT connections are all just moments away, making it incredibly convenient to explore the city. · The rooftop pool is the perfect place to unwind while taking in the city skyline. I also managed to squeeze in a workout at the gym, which is equipped with the latest Technogym equipments. Guests can also book a session with one of the hotel’s personal trainers during their stay. · I stayed in their One Bedroom Naluria Suite during this trip, which I’ll be sharing soon on another separate post.
