Lewtrenchard Manor

Lewtrenchard Manor

📍 Lewdown Devon England EX20 4PN, Okehampton
★★★ 9.1 (54 reviews)

"We stayed here for 3 days for our anniversary. It was an extremely beautiful hotel set in lovely gardens in the heart of the Devonshire countryside dating back to the Domesday book. It was completely refurbished last year to a very high standard. The food was superb and breakfasts excellent with so much choice. Our bedroom was huge with a modern four poster bed and a very nice ensuite bathroom. The bed was so comfortable and pillows like sleeping on a cloud. It was so peaceful with views from the bedroom overlooking the countryside. Staff were exceptionally pleasant, very helpful and they catered so well for dietary requirements. We thought the prices were very reasonable considering the location and the hotel itself and the standard of food. We will definitely visit again and certainly recommend it."

Travelodge Okehampton Sourton Cross

Travelodge Okehampton Sourton Cross

📍 Sourton Cross, A386, Okehampton
★★★ 8.4 (40 reviews)

"Used this as an overnight stop during a cycling adventure. The rooms are basic, but the essentials are all there and the bed was very comfortable. It’s located next to a service area with a Burger King, Greggs, and a well-stocked petrol station shop. Expect a little road noise given the location, but it wasn't a dealbreaker."

"Sunday lunch for three after a walk on the moor. We had booked a table and the service was excellent. Fast polite and attentive enough without being overly intrusive. A delicious roast dinner with crack my crackling on the pork. We enjoyed it so much we even went for pudding. It was all priced competitively given the prices of these things these days"

Fox & Hounds Hotel ★★
"Our children paid for an overnight stay to celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary. Although having driven past it many times since moving to Devon 20 years ago, we'd never paid a visit. What we found was a superb pub/hotel. We were made very welcome by Alice, and were directed to our room. Like the rest of the hotel, the room was superb, with an on-suite toilet and bath/shower. The bed was huge and very comfortable. Tea and coffee, along with a kettle, were also available. Then came the evening meal. For the main course, we had the 10oz. steak, and what a joy that was! Cooked as requested and served with plenty of chips, mushrooms and onions. If that wasn't enough, there followed a wonderful breakfast the following morning, and yes. Alice, who was there when we went up to bed the previous evening, was STILL there in the morning! Thank you to to the staff, and particularly Alice, who made us feel very welcome and who made our short stay so enjoyable and memorable. 😀"

Blue Lion Inn ★★★
"I stayed overnight at the Blue Lion when walking the Two Castles trail. It won my heart. Firstly, the pub is now also doubling up as the village shop during the day time, it truly is playing its part in the community. This does mean that it is also a handy place to buy supplies, whether staying there or passing by. I arrived an hour early, happy to sit outside, if necessary. However, despite everything else that was going on at the time, I was shown to my room and able to settle, which I very much appreciated. My room was excellent. A particularly comfortable bed. Nice and light. Spacious bathroom. Very clean. I was a little concerned about fronting the road, as I thought it would be noisy - but it was not, I was not disturbed by the traffic. I ate in the pub in the evening. I was quite taken aback by the specials board, it was not the expected fare of most pubs, having several less usual items. The atmosphere in the bar was great, people popping in from the village, general friendliness, a definite sense of all being made to feel welcome. I also had breakfast in the morning (not included) - a self service basic breakfast that was actually very convenient. Then, as arranged, I could just let myself out and go. The other point was the value for money. Absolutely superb value. I recommend the Blue Lion to anyone looking to support a truly local business qne who wants to have a sense of a community. Definitely my favourite stay along the walk."

Bearslake Inn ★★★★
"We visited Bearslake Inn a couple of days ago. Upon entering, we were welcomed by a bit of a weird smell inside, but I guess that must be part of the adventure when you visit such a historic, old building! Our meal was a tale of two extremes: The Starters: We ordered the honey-glazed pork belly, and it was hands-down the best thing I’ve tried so far. It was super soft on the inside, a bit crunchy on the outside, and coated in a perfect sweet glaze. Absolutely flawless. The Mains: Things went downhill from there. My husband had the lemon grilled pork chops, which were decent, but my main was a massive disappointment. I ordered the lamb with a side of chunky chips, and it was honestly the worst lamb I’ve ever had in my life. The meat was way too raw for my liking, had a weird color, and looked more boiled/cooked rather than fried or roasted. The Salt Overload: To make matters worse, the lamb itself was flavorless except for a mountain of salt thrown on top. The chunky chips were equally unedible—literally every single piece was entirely covered in salt. My only lasting memory of the main course is just the taste of pure salt and butter with every bite. It is incredibly sad that my meal was so disappointing after such a promising and delicious start."

"Our second visit, this time in Spring, was equally wonderful. The location, on the edge of Dartmoor, is spectacular- enjoyed particularly from the inn garden. The room is beautiful and the bed majestic and incredibly comfortable. As ever, the food is incredible. The best feature however, is the staff - who couldn’t be lovelier and more engaging."
