Located on the private, sandy banks of the Piankatank River, this spacious and well-appointed getaway is perfect for visitors of all ages. Whether you like to relax or explore, swim or hike, shop or read, there is something here for everyone. Come and see why we agree that life is better on the river!The space:Three-level river home with 4 bedrooms and 2.5 bathrooms. The first level includes one bedroom w/queen bed, a twin daybed in the sunroom, one full bathroom, and one half bath. Because of the age of the home, the stairs between the first and second level are quite steep (original to the 1900s added construction) and should be navigated by use of handrail with caution. Additionally, there is a spiral staircase off the back patio to navigate to the second floor as well. Guests with mobility issues are recommended to choose a sleeping arrangement on the first floor. The 2nd floor includes a bedroom with a king bed, a bedroom with a full bed and twin bed, and a 2nd full bathroom with a washer and dryer. The third floor is an expansive open-concept space, perfect for kids and other large groups including five twin beds, three with adjoining twin trundles. Two twins can be pushed together to create a king bed. Total sleeping capacity is 16.Additionally, this home has everything a chef could ask for in a fully stocked kitchen including a large storage pantry, an outdoor grill, and several small cooking appliances. The property has wifi that is reliable enough for working purposes but may slow depending on the number of guests utilizing it at any given time. There are three TVs at the house- one in the downstairs bedroom, one in the main living room, and one on the third floor- all are set up with Rokus.Relax and visit in the open-concept living room and kitchen. Cuddle up with a good book on the daybed in the private sunroom. Sip a cup of coffee or a cocktail from a rocking chair on the 2nd-floor outdoor deck. Gather for meals off the grill on the lower patio or sunbathe peacefully on the private dock. On sunny days during low tide, this property truly shines. As the tide recedes, the sandy riverbed floor is exposed, resulting in shallow, ankle-deep pools, great for the smallest of explorers. Less than 200 yards down the shoreline, there is a public beach that is enjoyed by residents. Shallow river inlets surround the area and can be explored by kayak, where local wildlife abounds.Need more space? On the property there is a 2 bedroom/1 bathroom guest apartment located above the garage with its own private entrance. One bedroom includes a king bed, the other includes a full-size top and bottom bunk bed. The apartment has a full kitchen, living area and washer and dryer. The kitchen cabinets have been built with comfort in mind. Pull-out drawers have replaced shelves so you can easily find what you need. Quartz countertops make clean-up easy. Dedicated baking drawers with supplies. There is an entire cabinet from ceiling to floor of pull-out drawers for our guests supplies. The large dining table has seating for 12 so everyone can gather for family meals. There is also an outdoor white Pottery Barn table on the wraparound porch to eat overlooking the river. If you are lucky, you might see the pods of dolphins that come up the river. Step outside from the back porch and fire up the grill for all your grilling needs and crab steaming. Propane tanks are provided for your use. And right beside the grill is a poly-wood picnic table for the crab feasts under the shade of an ancient oak tree. When it's time to unwind, sink into the comfortable, large leather sectional sofa in the “Rivah” room or head out to the porch and take in the stunning water views. The children will enjoy playing on the play set while the parents can see them from the kitchen. At night, enjoy the fire pit with Adirondack chairs for 12 with firewood provided. The beach area is perfect for children to become comfortable in the water. Beach chairs, loungers are provided as well as plastic chairs you can literally sit in the river! You can challenge your loved ones to a game night with the selection of games provided. Included is high-speed WiFi for 18 devices, a fully stocked laundry room with a large washer and dryer. Multiple kayaks, a pedal boat for four, life jackets in multiple sizes, bikes, volleyball, croquet, and corn hole are available for your use with no extra charge. Fish from the shore, walk out and cast into the river or use a kayak to get to deeper water. There are also crab pots with a crab steamer, large and small, to cook your catch. Gwynn's Island Cottage is a modest waterfront cottage on the Chesapeake Bay with panoramic views and sunsets over the water. The small, private beach is entirely on the property and not shared. We are pet friendly. During the summer months, we rent weekly, Sunday to Sunday.The Cottage is located on quaint and historic Gwynn's Island with a public marina and terrific restaurant dining over the water 1/3 of a mile away. The Cottage sleeps 4 guests in 2 bedrooms. On your private beach, you can swim, kayak, paddle board, fish and crab, bird watch, float on a raft, enjoy a good book or an adult beverage. The Shed is full of everything you don't need to bring: beach chairs, 3 kayaks, bikes, a stand up paddleboard, zero gravity chairs, crab nets, crab pot, floats, rafts, noodles, children's beach toys, life vests, a croquet set, and hammock. Hills Bay is clean, shallow, and sandy-bottomed, with little current, so perfect for children and seafaring explorers alike. You can fish right from the beach or from kayaks. Guests catch drum, trout, rockfish, croaker, spot and flounder. The crab pot or the fishing nets allow guests to catch crabs when they are in season. After a quick rinse in the outdoor shower after your day on the beach or in the water, use the Weber kettle charcoal grill for cooking up the day’s catch or fresh seafood from a nearby market. Enjoy dinner al fresco on the deck overlooking the water as you watch that sunset... For cooler evenings, light a fire in the Bonfire Solo stove under the stars. With little light pollution, the night sky is often spectacular.From the Cottage, guests experience bird life such as bald eagles, blue herons, ospreys, seagulls, white tundra swans, bufflehead ducks, loons, plus dolphins in the warm months. Boat watching is plentiful with a yacht club just across the water, with boat action in and out of Hills Bay from the Chesapeake. Or bring your own boat. There's plenty of room on the long, circular driveway to trailer in and out. The island's public boat landing is 1/3 of a mile away, with parking for your trailer while you are on the water and a restaurant for provisions.The Cottage is pet-friendly! Four legged guests enjoy the beach with its shallow, clean water. We provide doggie towels. We own the small woods next door where dogs can "get their sniffs on." If you plan to bring your pet, just message the manager with the age, breed, gender, weight, and name of your animal/s. We charge a pet fee of $125 for all animals for your entire stay (less than kennels or pet sitters). They will enjoy being with you on vacay. Between Memorial Day weekend and Labor Day weekend, we rent weekly, Sunday to Sunday. Just a two-night minimum the rest of the year.We have a large capacity washer, dryer, and the laundry room has space to air dry. Our outdoor shower also has foot spigots. The Cottage has a 50" smart TV with cable and wifi. If you bring your electric/hybrid vehicle, we have an outdoor outlet (120v) for charging. The Cottage has a retro Frigidaire Mini-fridge that chills 6 cans of your favorite beverage and doubles as a Bluetooth speaker. Take it outside to play your tunes on the beach or deck!
