The Bear Inn ★★★

📍 The Bear Inn Wirksworth Road, Belper

"I really dislike leaving bad reviews, but I wouldn't want anyone else to have the same experience, so felt I should call it out. We visited the Bear Inn for a late Sunday lunch as our son had been there the week before and said how nice the food was, specifically the braised ox cheek. So we turned up with high expectations. I went for the roast beef and my wife went for the nut roast. What turned up was frankly appalling. Both meals were utterly drowned in gravy. Now I know some people like a lot of gravy, but this stuff was cold, congealed and very salty. But the "beef" was even worse. Very fatty and full of sinews. I could barely cut through it. When I braved a mouthful I had no choice but to spit it out. It was literally inedible. My wife very graciously let me swap with her, and I managed to eat some mashed potato, despite it tasting a bit odd. The nut roast itself wasn't actually too bad, but the remaining vegetables were flaccid and tasteless. Sadly the whole lot was again smothered in nasty congealed gravy, which we also noted was the exact same (presumably meat-based) gravy served with the "beef". Any vegetarians/vegans thinking they had a meat-free meal with the nut roast would be in for a surprise! To be fair, the barman was apologetic and he didn't charge us for the "beef". Perhaps the kitchen was just having an off-day, or maybe roast dinners just aren't their thing, but either way this was just about the worst roast dinner I have ever been served in my life - and I've had a few in my time. Suffice to say that we won't be giving the Bear Inn our custom again."

Makeney Hall Hotel ★★★★
"The Hotel is set in a very picturesque location in the Derbyshire Peak District. The room was very clean and comfortable, but basic. The only negative point I would like to mention was that there was no hot water for the duration of my stay, but I would not hold this against the hotel, as it was an unforeseen issue. I would recommend this place for a short stay relaxing break. The local area has some extremely friendly pubs and restaurants, along with some beautiful walks."

The Bear Inn ★★★
"We were surprised to be asked to settle our room bill - £304 for 2 nights inc breakfast - the moment we arrived in reception before even being shown our room. In good faith we settled the bill. The way to the room was through the old building which smelled of damp covered over with air freshener products - not pleasant. Fire doors were covered in cobwebs and detritus on carpet. The staff member struggles to get key in door as lock miissaligned with handle keyhole. The room was poorly cleaned. Thick dust on surfaces. It was for cost of room very small. No chest of drawers for clothes. Just few pegs for hanging. No wardrobe. Architrave roughly fastened with exposed screws. No care with scruffy decor. Shower screen broken and poorly maintained. The shower pressure was pathetic - think watering can at best. Toilet seat was missing studs and so slid off base bowl in use. Tiny kettle inadequate which was to be plugged in to an extension lead which was nailed to skirting - think garden shed electric supply standard. Cable TV signal erratic. Again corridors showed evidence of untreated mould and damp. At the wedding we attended when I told a local we were staying at Bear with no prompting said " they don't have cleaners there". I feel sorry for staff who are friendly and food was more than okay - good even. But whoever owns business is leaving staff to front this inadequate maintained and tired overpriced accommodation. At first breakfast we ordered avacodo on toast from breakfast menu. Very pleasant staff said avacodo has not been delivered yet. We accepted this with tired patience. Next morning same staff said before we could ask " the Avocado never did arrive" laugh... Not good enough by a long way"
