Currently, Xiamen Metro has 3 operating lines, covering Xiamen Island, Haicang, Jimei, Tong’an, and Xiang’an districts.

Main Operational Metro Lines

  • Line 1 (Red): From Yannei to Zhenhai Road. The most popular tourist line, runs across downtown, coastal villages and northern transport hubs, passing most classic scenic spots and food streets.
  • Line 2 (Green): From Tianzhushan to Wuyuanwan. Covers west coastal areas, urban lakeside parks and new waterfront business districts, ideal for leisure slow travel.
  • Line 3 (Blue): From Caocuo to Xiamen Railway Station. Exclusive airport access line, directly linking city centre and train station, the top choice for flight passengers.

2 additional lines, Line 4 and Line 6, are under construction and will significantly expand access to Xiamen Xiang'an International Airport and surrounding districts.

How to Pay for Taking Xiamen Metro?

Plastic Token Ticket (Most Friendly for Foreigners)

Single-journey token tickets are the simplest choice for first-time visitors and travellers without Chinese payment apps.

How to Use:

  1. Find an automatic ticket machine or visit the staffed service counter at any metro station.
  2. Select your destination station on the touchscreen map (English is available).
  3. The machine will display the fare, usually between ¥2 and ¥7.
  4. Insert cash notes and coins, or use mobile payment if supported.
  5. Collect the small plastic token and any change.
  6. Tap the token on the sensor at the entry gate.
  7. Keep the token during your trip.
  8. Insert the token into the slot at the exit gate when you reach your destination.

Best For: Foreign tourists, occasional riders, and travelers without Alipay or WeChat Pay.

Alipay Metro QR Code

If you already use Alipay, you can activate a metro QR code and travel without buying tickets.

How to Use:

  1. Open Alipay and switch to the Xiamen city service if needed.
  2. Search for “Metro”, “Transport” or  “厦门乘车码” (Xiamen Transit Code).
  3. Activate the Xiamen Metro ride code.
  4. Complete identity verification and link a payment method.
  5. Tap to display your QR code.
  6. Scan the QR code at the metro gate to enter.
  7. Scan again or simply exit depending on gate design.
  8. The fare will be deducted automatically after your journey.

Best For: Travelers with Alipay set up and linked to an international bank card.

WeChat Pay Riding Code

WeChat users can also ride the metro using a transport QR code.

How to Use:

  1. Open WeChat and tap “Services” or “Pay.”
  2. Go to “Discover” → “Mini Programs” → Search “厦门地铁乘车码”.
  3. Choose Xiamen Metro as your transit system.
  4. Link your payment method and complete any verification steps.
  5. Generate the ride QR code.
  6. Scan the code at the entry gate.
  7. Exit normally and the fare will be charged automatically.
