Heading to Xiamen? Getting around the city is super convenient with the Xiamen Metro. It’s affordable, fast, and connects major attractions, business districts, and transportation hubs.

Currently, Xiamen Metro has 3 operating lines, covering Xiamen Island, Haicang, Jimei, Tong’an, and Xiang’an districts.

Main Operational Metro Lines

• Line 1 (Red): From Yannei to Zhenhai Road. The most popular tourist line, runs across downtown, coastal villages and northern transport hubs, passing most classic scenic spots and food streets.
• Line 2 (Green): From Tianzhushan to Wuyuanwan. Covers west coastal areas, urban lakeside parks and new waterfront business districts, ideal for leisure slow travel.
• Line 3 (Blue): From Caocuo to Xiamen Railway Station. Exclusive airport access line, directly linking city centre and train station, the top choice for flight passengers.

2 additional lines, Line 4 and Line 6, are under construction and will significantly expand access to Xiamen Xiang'an International Airport and surrounding districts.

• Line 4 (Dark blue): Guankou → Houxi
• Line 6 (Purple): Lindai West → Huaqiao University

During summer vacation, winter vacation, Chinese public holidays or important events, Xiamen Metro will extend partial operating hours and add temporary trains to ease passenger flow pressure.

Xiamen Metro adopts distance-based tiered charging rules, with low travel cost suitable for budget travellers.

• Maximum single trip fare within main urban area is no more than ¥7 (S$1.24)
• Children under 1.2 metres tall can ride free when accompanied by adults

Tourist Exclusive Metro Passes

• ✅ 1-Day Unlimited Pass: ¥15 (S$2.82), valid 24 hours after activation, unlimited rides for city one-day tour
• ✅ 8 Timed Pass: ¥12 (S$2.26), 8 times rides

How to Pay for Taking Xiamen Metro?

Plastic Token Ticket (Most Friendly for Foreigners)

Single-journey token tickets are the simplest choice for first-time visitors and travellers without Chinese payment apps.

How to Use:

1. Find an automatic ticket machine or visit the staffed service counter at any metro station.
2. Select your destination station on the touchscreen map (English is available).
3. The machine will display the fare, usually between ¥2 and ¥7.
4. Insert cash notes and coins, or use mobile payment if supported.
5. Collect the small plastic token and any change.
6. Tap the token on the sensor at the entry gate.
7. Keep the token during your trip.
8. Insert the token into the slot at the exit gate when you reach your destination.

Best For: Foreign tourists, occasional riders, and travelers without Alipay or WeChat Pay.

Alipay Metro QR Code

If you already use Alipay, you can activate a metro QR code and travel without buying tickets.

How to Use:

1. Open Alipay and switch to the Xiamen city service if needed.
2. Search for “Metro”, “Transport” or  “厦门乘车码” (Xiamen Transit Code).
3. Activate the Xiamen Metro ride code.
4. Complete identity verification and link a payment method.
5. Tap to display your QR code.
6. Scan the QR code at the metro gate to enter.
7. Scan again or simply exit depending on gate design.
8. The fare will be deducted automatically after your journey.

Best For: Travelers with Alipay set up and linked to an international bank card.

WeChat Pay Riding Code

WeChat users can also ride the metro using a transport QR code.

How to Use:

1. Open WeChat and tap “Services” or “Pay.”
2. Go to “Discover” → “Mini Programs” → Search “厦门地铁乘车码”.
3. Choose Xiamen Metro as your transit system.
4. Link your payment method and complete any verification steps.
5. Generate the ride QR code.
6. Scan the code at the entry gate.
7. Exit normally and the fare will be charged automatically.

Best For: Travelers already using WeChat Pay during their trip to China.

Xiamen Public Transport Card

The Xiamen Public Transport Card is a reloadable smart card that works on both metro lines and city buses.

How to Use:

1. Purchase the card at metro service centers or selected convenience stores.
2. Pay the refundable deposit and add stored value.
3. Tap the card on the gate reader when entering and exiting the metro.
4. Recharge the card whenever the balance runs low.

Best For: Long-term visitors, business travelers, and anyone planning to use both buses and the metro frequently.

Official Xiamen Metro App

The official metro app provides route planning, train arrival information, and a built-in QR code for ticketless travel.

How to Use:

1. Download the Xiamen Metro app (厦门地铁App) from your app store.
2. Register an account using your mobile number.
3. Link your preferred payment method.
4. Use the app to check routes, fares, and first/last train times.
5. Open the ride code and scan it at the gates.

Best For: Tech-savvy travelers who want real-time metro information and integrated payment.

Note: Ordinary overseas contactless credit cards are not supported for direct metro access for now.

How to Take Xiamen Metro?

1. Confirm destination station and transfer routes via travel apps in advance.
2. Enter station entrance and finish security check for all bags and luggage.
3. Choose payment method: buy tokens, open mobile QR code or take transport card.
4. Follow bilingual signs to reach correct platform, double-check train destination.
5. Queue behind yellow safety line, let passengers alight first then board orderly.
6. Hold handrails steadily during ride, listen carefully to station broadcast.
7. Get off at target station, follow exit signs to leave platform.
8. Complete code scan, card tap or token recycling at exit gate to finish the trip.

Travelling Etiquette on Xiamen Metro

• Do not eat food or drink strong-smelling beverages inside carriages and stations.
• Offer seats voluntarily to elders, pregnant women, kids and disabled passengers.
• No running, loud talking or blocking passenger passageways on platforms.
• Large bicycles, dangerous goods and oversized bulky items are prohibited.
• Keep voice down when watching videos to avoid disturbing others.
